  • A fracture of hand held device, such as radio, TV and CD-RW drive, mainly occurs due to drop situation. For CD-RW drive, the need of high reading/writing speed in conjunction with low price accelerates the fracture of the device. Computer simulation can reduce the period of development and enhance impact characteristic of device. In this study, the detailed finite element model of CD-RW drive was developed to predict the damage under drop conditions. Material property for shock absorbing damper was obtained from tensile test of raw material. A MOONEY-RIVLIN type rubber in LS-DYNA was used as the material model of damper. To assess the reliability of the developed model, drop test at 200G-2msec and 150G-10msec condition was conducted and acceleration at pick-up was compared.

  • The variable fatigue load is simulated in this study. The stability and the life of the material are analyzed theoretically by Ansys program. These results are successfully applied to the practical wheel to predict the prevention of fracture and the endurance. The life and the damage on the every part of the fatigue specimen can be predicted. As the available lives are compared for every loading variation, the rain flow and damage matrix results can be helpful in determining the effects of small stress cycles in any loading history. The rainbow and damage matrices illustrate the possible effects of infinite life. The safety and stability of wheel and the other practical structures according to the variable load can be estimated by using the results of this study.

  • In this paper, seismic performance evaluation was carried out for eight circular reinforced concrete columns designed seismically by KRTA[1]and KCI[8]. Primary design parameters for such columns included many longitudinal reinforcements, yield strength of reinforcements, the vertical spacing of spirals, aspect ratio, and axial force ratio. The test results showed that all the columns exhibited stable hysteretic and inelastic responses. Based on the test results, drift ratios corresponding to each damage state, such as initial yielding, initial cover spalling, initial core concrete crushing, buckling, and fracture of longitudinal reinforcement and final spalled region, were evaluated. Then, those ratios were compared with widely accepted damage limit states. The comparison revealed that the existing damage states were considerably conservative. This implies that additional research is required for the damage limit states of such columns designed seismically by current Korean design codes.

  • Based on combined continuum-fracture mechanics, fracture criterion was utilized to predict impact performance of advanced high-strength steel sheets: 340R and TWIP940. The macro-crack propagation behavior at high stress triaxiality was characterized by V-notch tests while deformation behavior at high strain rate was characterized by simple tension tests with various cross head speeds. The characterized mechanical properties were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to simulate the charpy impact tests, which showed good agreement with experiments.

  • An experimental system on three point bending notched beams was established to study the fracture process of concrete. In this system, the acoustic emission (AE) was used to build the cumulative generation order (AGO) and dynamically track the process of microcrack evolution in concrete. A grey-cusp catastrophe model was built based on AE parameters. The results show that the concrete beams have significant catastrophe characteristic. The developed grey-cusp catastrophe model, based on AGO, can well describe the catastrophe characteristic of concrete fracture process. This study also provides a theoretical and technical support for the application of AE in concrete fracture prediction.

  • Quartz glass are used in semiconductor industries as the reaction furnace, wafer carrier and accessaries. During the process the quartz glass received compression by direct contact with other quartz glass ware and metal as the form of weight itself and vacuum pressure and fatigue by vibrations caused by process. Even as the other ceramic materials quartz glass have high compressive strength but often there happened crack and breakage of quartz glass resulted in a great damage in the process. In this paper investigation will be carried out on fracture behavior of quartz glass under local load to give guideline to prevent unintended fracture of quartz glass.

  • Miniaturzed specimen technology permits mechanical bechanical behavior to be determined using a minimum volume of material. because it is almost impossible to sample the conventional specimen for the fracture toughness test without damage to the rotor. In addition, it is different to collect a large amount of actual turbine rotor steels. Hence seven kinds of specimen with different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at 630 .deg. C. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which was widely used for turbine rotor material. The relation between fracture toughness and DBTT was investigated The characteristics of minaturized impact speciments technique was discussed. Finally, the estimating method of fracture toughness using a single impact specimen was introduced.

  • Internal defects such as chevron crack occasionally occur in the process of cold extrusion or cold drawing. It is known that the existence and property of inclusion greatly influences the generation of the internal crack. However, in the plastic working field, research about the effect of the inclusion on the fracture is not theoretically analyzed. This paper describes effects of the physical property of inclusion on the internal fracture generation in the process. Prediction of fracture was evaluated by critical damage value calculated by the equation of Cockcroft & Latham and its change by the inclusion physical property such as size and stiffness was investigated.

  • The deep excavation work in Korean downtown is almost excuted near by existing structures and utility lines because of the diminution of available yard for construction. So, it was required more and more that the accurate control of displacement on the earth retaining system for minimizing the popular complaint and the damage from constructional accident. Automatic monitoring system is adopted in fracture zone for real time monitoring. In addition, Face mapping is carried out on the face of fracture zone according to excavation sequence. As the result of automatic monitoring system and face mapping, we was able to take the necessary reinforcement and changing excavation method within suitable time. This paper is informed about a stability case on the deep rock excavation site with fracture zone in urban area by automatic monitoring system.
