  • In this study, the effects of fracture tensor component and first invariant on block hydraulic behaviors are evaluated in the 2-D DFN(discrete fracture network) systems. A series of regression analysis is performed between connected fracture tensor components and block hydraulic conductivities estimated at every $30^{\circ}$ hydraulic gradient directions for a total of 36 DFN systems having various joint density and size distribution. The directional block hydraulic conductivity seems to have strong relation with the fracture tensor component estimated in direction perpendicular to it. It is found that an equivalent continuum approach could be acceptable for the 2-D DFN systems under condition that the first invariant of fracture tensor is more than 2.0~2.5. The first invariant of fracture tensor seems highly correlated with average block hydraulic conductivity and can be used to evaluate hydraulic characteristics of the 2-D DFN systems. Also, a possibility of upscaling using the first invariant of fracture tensor for the DFN system is addressed through this study.

  • In this paper, a study on fracture characteristics of chemically prestressed mortar with addition of expansive additives was carried out. Uni-axial tension tests with reinforced mortar specimen restrained by embedded reinforcing bar and three point bending tests with notched steel fiber reinforced beams were carried out to verify the characteristics of the cracking behavior, the tension stiffening effect due to bond between rebar and mortar, and fracture characteristic. Tension stiffening curve for the chemically prestressed mortar was obtained from uni-axial tension test. And increased fracture energy due to the chemical prestress was also obtained from bending test and tension softening curve for chemically prestressed mortar was also obtained.

  • Rubber is used extensively in many industries because of its large reversible elastic deformation, excellent damping and energy absorption characteristics, and wide availability. Therefore it becomes very important to evaluate fracture characteristics of rubber. Tearing energy and J-integral have been used as fracture parameters of rubber. The J-integral values for pure shear and single edge specimen are calculated by finite element analysis and compare with theoretical values. Finite element analysis is performed by ABAQUS.

  • Nuclear reactor pressure vessel should be safety even in the case that hypothetical defects with allowable size are in vessel. Therefore, the materials should have excellent fracture resistance characteristics. The purpose of this study is to analyze the results of preirradiation baseline test of nuclear pressure vessel for Yonggwang Unit 5/6. In experiments, drop weight tests and impact tests are carried out to obtain nil-ductility transition reference temperature, $RT_{NDT}$ and static and dynamic fracture toughness tests are performed to compare with $K_{IR}$ curve in accordance with ASME Sec.III. The test results show that the materials had sufficiently fracture resistance characteristics for 40 years of design life.

  • When compared to other composite materials such as FRP and MMC, hybrid composite material is more attractive one due to the high specific strength and the resistance to fatigue. However, the fracture mechanism of hybrid composite material is extremely complicated because of the bonding structure of metals and FRP. Recently, nondestructive technique has been used to evaluate the fracture mechanism of these composite materials. In this study, AE technique has been used to clarify the fracture mechanism and the degree of damage for Al 7075/CFRP hybrid composite material. It was found that AE event, energy and amplitude among AE parameters were effective to evaluate fracture process of Al 7075/CFRP composite material. In addition, the relationship between the AE signal and the characteristics of failure surface using optical microscope was discussed.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fracture resistance characteristics of SA508 CL.1a carbon steel, and their associated welds manufactured for primary coolant piping system of nuclear power plants. The effect of various parameters such as pipe size, welding method and chemical composition on the material properties were discussed. Test results showed that the offset of pipe size on tincture toughness was negligible, while the effect of welding method on fracture toughness was significant. In addition, Fracture toughness for carbon steel was influenced by silicon contents due to the different steel refining processes.

  • The effects of fiber orientation on acoustic emission(AE) characteristics have been studied for various composite laminates. Reflection and transmission optical microscopy were used to investigate the damage zone of specimens. AE signals were classified through short time Fourier transform(STFT) as different types: AE signals with a high intensity and high frequency band were due to fiber fracture, while weak AE signals with a low frequency band were due to matrix cracking and/or interfacial cracking. Characteristic feature in the rate of hit-events having high amplitudes showed a procedure of fiber breakages, which expressed the characteristic fracture processes of notched fiber-reinforced plastics with different fiber orientations. As a consequence, the behavior of fracture in the continuous composite laminates could be monitored through nondestructive evaluation(NDE) using the AE technique.

  • Miniaturized specimen technology is useful to characterize the mechanical behavior using a minimum volume of material, because it is almost impossible to sample the conventional specimen for the fracture toughness test without damage to equipment. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which was widely used for turbine rotor material. Two kinds of miniaturized impact specimens were prepared, i.e., miniaturized specimen with side groove and without side groove. The correlation between ductile brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of full size impact specimen and that of miniaturized impact specimen was made. The characteristics of miniaturized impact specimens technique as well as fracture stress were discussed. Finally, we concluded that the characteristics of fracture stress change on aging time were similar to that of DBTT.

  • The service demands of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. It is very important to evaluate the fracture mechanics characteristics with respect to high-speed train wheel. In the present study, fracture mechanics characterization tests were carried out in accordance with various wheel materials. The result shows that fracture mechanics characteristic should be considered in the design code of the wheel materials.

  • Ideally, it is preferable to obtain the fracture characteristics of a piping from the fracture toughness of real pipes. However, a fracture toughness test on real pipes not only incurs much expense, but is very difficult to perform. Therefore fracture toughness tests have been carried out with standard specimens instead of real pipes. But, the estimates of fracture toughness obtained from standard specimens are more conservative than those of real pipes owing to the difference in the constraint effect between real pipes and standard specimens. Therefore, we have been studied with equivalent stress gradient specimen (ESG) which is designed to behave equally compared to real pipe about stress gradient on crack tip. In this study, we will evaluate fracture characteristics of equivalent stress gradient specimen by using analytical methods and compare with those of real pipe. And finally investigate suitability of equivalent stress gradient specimen.
