The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundations. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibrations and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundation are derived as nondimensional forms. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalues(natural frequencies and buckling loads), respectively. Hinged-hinged and damped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The relation between frequency parameter and elastic foundation parameter is presented in figure. The effects of axial loads on the natural frequencies of beam-columns on elastic foundations are investigated and the relation between buckling load parameter and elastic foundation parameter is also analyzed. The relation between foundation rested ratio and frequency parameter, buckling load parameter are investigated. The beam-columns on non-homogeneous elastic foundation are analyzed and typical mode shapes are also presented.

Shallow footings are one of the most common types of foundations used to support mid-rise buildings in high risk seismic zones. Recent findings have revealed that the dynamic interaction between the soil, foundation, and the superstructure can influence the seismic response of the building during earthquakes. Accordingly, the properties of a foundation can alter the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency and damping) of the soil-foundation-structure system. In this paper the influence that shallow foundations have on the seismic response of a mid-rise moment resisting building is investigated. For this purpose, a fifteen storey moment resisting frame sitting on shallow footings with different sizes was simulated numerically using ABAQUS software. By adopting a direct calculation method, the numerical model can perform a fully nonlinear time history dynamic analysis to realistically simulate the dynamic behaviour of soil, foundation, and structure under seismic excitations. This three-dimensional numerical model accounts for the nonlinear behaviour of the soil medium and structural elements. Infinite boundary conditions were assigned to the numerical model to simulate free field boundaries, and appropriate contact elements capable of modelling sliding and separation between the foundation and soil elements are also considered. The influence of foundation size on the natural frequency of the system and structural response spectrum was also studied. The numerical results for cases of soil-foundation-structure systems with different sized foundations and fixed base conditions (excluding soil-foundation-structure interaction) in terms of lateral deformations, inter-storey drifts, rocking, and shear force distribution of the structure were then compared. Due to natural period lengthening, there was a significant reduction in the base shears when the size of the foundation was reduced. It was concluded that the size of a shallow foundation influences the dynamic characteristics and the seismic response of the building due to interaction between the soil, foundation, and structure, and therefore design engineer should carefully consider these parameters in order to ensure a safe and cost effective seismic design.
The purpose of this study is to provide for the basic data useful to the effective production and marketing of the foundation garments befitting adult women's body shapes and preferences, and thereby, help them improve their apparel life. For this purpose, 563 Korean adult women aged between 20-59 were sampled to survey their recognition and actual wearing condition of foundation garments and positively identify the factors affecting the practices and thereupon, determine the correlations among them by age group. Data is processed by a computer (SAS) and analyzed by using frequency, percentage, ${\chi}^2$-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test. The main results of this study are as follows; 1. The most of the adult women were aware of the basic underwear terminologies and the absolute majority of them wore brassieres, while a half of them used the girdles. In contrast, only a small portion of them wore body suites or waste-nippers and the absolute minority of them had garterbelts. 2. The use of the foundations depended much on users' ages or seasons. They had begun to wear brassieres and girdles at their age of 15 on average, and bodysuites, waist-nippers or garterbelts around their age of 20 depending on their individual needs. 3. The adult women had 3-6 brassieres and 2-3 girdles on average, but only a minority of them owned one or two body suites, waist-nippers or garterbelts. They had ever used the functional foundations (11.5%) or imported foundations (35.9%), It has been found through this study that adult women's recognition and actual wearing condition of their foundation garments differ by age group, which may well suggest that foundation production need to take such age-wise practices into consideration in setting up their foundation production and marketing strategies.
In this paper, response of pile foundations under seismic loading is studied for use in aseismic design of deep foundations. Both the pseudostatic methods such as subgrade reaction theory by Reese, and elastic analysis by Poulos, and the dynamic methods proposed by, respectively, Prakash and Gazetas, are used for this study. The top displacements and maximum bending moments of example piles are obtained by each method mentioned above, and the results by each method are compared among others. The group pile effects are also considered approximately. The calculated results are compared with experimental results obtained by Novak in 1984. The pseudostatic methods, combined with dynamic group interaction factors, and the dynamic method proposed by Gazetas which considers both kinematic interaction and inertial interaction, separately, estimate the top displacements reasonably well : the method by Prakah or the pseudostatic methods combined with static group interaction factors may overestimate the top displacements and bending moments as well. Therefore, it is recommended to the the simple elastic analysis combined with dynamic group interaction factors for aseismic design of pile foundatins and to confirm the results by the Gaz etas' dynamic methods.
The ultimate bearing capacity of surface foundations on a sand layer overlying clay has been theoretically investigated. First, a review of previous studies on the bearing capacity problems for this type of foundation was performed and a discussion was presented concerning the practical application. Second, the kinematic approach of limit analysis was used to calculate the upper bound of the true ultimate bearing capacity. The kinematic solutions are upper bounds and their accuracy depends primarily on the nature of the assumed failure mechanism. This approach makes it convenient to create design charts, and it is possible to trace the influence of parameters. Third, the commercial finite element program ABAQUS was applied to obtain the ultimate bearing capacity based on the elasto-plastic theory. Results obtained from the kinematic approach were compared with those from the program ABAQUS and the limit equilibrium equations proposed by Yamaguchi, Meyerhof and Okamura et al. Finally, the validities of the results from the kinematic approach, the results from the program ABAQUS and the limit equilibrium equations were examined.
The construction of combined pile-raft foundations is considered as the main option in designing foundations in high-rise buildings, especially in soils close to the ground surface which do not have sufficient bearing capacity to withstand building loads. This paper deals with the geotechnical report of the Northern Fereshteh area of Tabriz, Iran, and compares the characteristics of the single pile foundation with the two foundations of pile group and geogrid. Besides, we investigate the effects of five principal parameters including pile diameter and length, the number of geogrid layers, the depth of groundwater level, and pore water pressure on vertical consolidation settlement and pore water pressure changes over a year. This study assessed the mechanism of the failure of the soil under the foundation using numerical analysis as well. Numerical analysis was performed using the two-dimensional finite element PLAXIS software. The results of fifty-four models indicate that the diameter of the pile tip, either as a pile group or as a single pile, did not have a significant effect on the reduction of the consolidation settlement in the soil in the Northern Fereshteh Street region. The optimum length for the pile in the Northern Fereshteh area is 12 meters, which is economically feasible. In addition, the construction of four-layered ten-meter-long geogrids at intervals of 1 meter beneath the deep foundation had a significant preventive impact on the consolidation settlement in clayey soils.
During excavation work for the construction of a highway bridge in a limestone area in Korea, several cavities were found, and construction work was stopped temporarily. Cavities under the bridge piers might seriously threaten the safety of the planned bridge, because they could lead to excessive subsidence and differential settlement of the pier foundations. In order to establish a method for reinforcement of the pier foundations, borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys were carried out, to locate cavities under the planned pier locations and to determine their sizes where they exist. Since travel time data from the crosshole radar survey showed anisotropy, we applied an anisotropic tomography inversion algorithm assuming heterogeneous elliptic anisotropy, in order to reconstruct three kinds of tomograms: tomograms of maximum and minimum velocities, and of the direction of the symmetry axis. The distribution of maximum velocity matched core logging results better than that of the minimum velocity. The degree of anisotropy, defined by the normalized difference between maximum and minimum velocities, was helpful in deciding whether an anomalous zone in a tomogram was a cavity or not. By careful examination of borehole radar reflection and tomography images, the spatial distributions of cavities were delineated, and most of them were interpreted as being filled with clay and/or water. All the interpretation results implied that two faults imaged clearly by a DC resistivity survey were among the most important factors controlling the groundwater movement in the survey area, and therefore were closely related to the development of cavities. The method of reinforcement of the pier foundations was based on the interpretation results, and the results were confirmed when construction work was resumed.
SThe rigidities of bridge substructures are the important data in the rail-bridge interaction analysis in Korean High -Speed Railway. This experimental study is being performed because of followings. 1) More correct longitudinal stiffness of the structure including substructure should be considered in the calculation of stresses in rails. 2) There are many uncertainties in the design and construction of the piers and foundations. 3) Actual guideline for the rigidities of piers and foundations in the design is necessary. 4) Measurement on the rigidity of pier according to the types of piers, foundations and soil-conditions is needed. Curve for estimating the total rigidity of substructure will be obtained through this and further experimental studies. It may be used in the analysis of Korean High-Speed Railway bridge and then, longitudinal stresses in the rails can be estimated more accurately. One pair of piers, which consist of pot-bearing for fixed support and pad-bearing for movable support, are loaded by steel frame devices with steel wire ropes and hydraulic jack. The responses which are measured at each loading stages in those field tests are displacements and tilted angles on the top and bottom of piers. This study is being performed testing and analysis about several piers in the construction field.

A lot of long-span marine bridge, which connects land to island or island to island, are being designed and constructed lately in south-west coast in South Korea. In the past, caisson foundations in marine were mainly adopted in construction and stability aspect, however, nowadays with development of pile construction technology, drilled shaft foundations are mainly adopted. As the long span cable stayed bridge and suspension bridge applied with lots of loads are being designed, the scale of pile foundations are getting larger. As the construction cost of substructure including foundation in marine bridges is too high, the appropriate evaluation of the axial bearing capacity of pile becomes a core factor to decide the construction cost of foundation if the drilled shaft is adopted as foundation type of bridge. The evaluation values of skin friction and end bearing capacity of drilled shaft in weathered rock suggested in south Korea are only to introduce the foreign specifications, and most of them are designed in a kind of hard soil layer. Also the allowable load of pile section is less than the expected bearing capacity of pile in the soil condition since the allowable capacity of pile is undervalued. Recently in order to improve this factor the bi-axial hydraulic load test of pile was taken, the data of load transfer analysis of pile, unit of skin friction and end bearing capacity are accumulated. In our country, the design of piles are made with ASD, however, LRFD considering service, strength and extreme state was adopted in Incheon Grand Bridge implemented with BTL, and the research to systematize the resistance coefficient appropriate at home country are being progressed.
The moment responses of electric pole foundations for a railway were investigated using real-scale load tests. Large overturning moments were applied to two circular rigid piles with a 0.75 m diameter and a 2.5 m embedded depth; the circular rigid piles were installed in an actual railway embankment fill. Two different loading directions-toward the fill slope and toward the track -were applied to evaluate the influence of the fill slope on the moment capacities of the foundations. It was found that the failure of the foundations that were constructed according to Korean railway practices exhibited a sudden overturning pattern without any significant pre-failure displacement. The moment capacity toward the fill slope was less than the moment capacity toward the track by 30%. From the test results, the geometry factor (K), which accounted for the reduction of the moment capacity, due to the fill slope, was 0.7. Moment capacities determined from the load tests were compared with those predicted from three existing design methods, and their applicability was discussed.
