A Diffusion Model for a System Subject to Random Shocks

  • A diffusion model for a system subject to random shocks is introduced. It is assumed that the state of system is modeled by a Brownian motion with negative drift and an absorbing barrier at the origin. It is also assumed that the shocks coming to the system according to a Poisson process decrease the state of the system by a random amount. It is further assumed that a repairman arrives according to another Poisson process and repairs or replaces the system i the system, when he arrives, is in state zero. A forward differential equation is obtained for the distribution function of X(t), the state of the systme at time t, some boundary conditions are discussed, and several interesting characteristics are derived, such as the first passage time to state zero, F(0,t), the probability of the system being in state zero at time t, and F(0), the limit of F(0,t) as t tends to infinity.

  • A nonlinear time-domain strip theory for vertical wave loads and ship responses is to be investigated. The hydrodynamic memory effect is approximated by a higher order differential equation without convolution. The ship is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam. Numerical calculations are presented for the S175 Containership translating with the forward speed in regular waves. The approach described in this paper can be used in evaluating ship motions and wave loads in extreme wave conditions and validating nonlinear phenomena in ship design.

  • We introduce a new stable feedback controller eventually converges to a conventional SDRE(State Dependent Riccati Equation) based optimal (suboptimal) controller. On conventional SDRE, the optimal control input should be obtained by backward integration of the SDRE at each control point. The proposed controller is given by direct forward integration of a proposed SDRE. This fact enables fast computation and easy implementation. On concerning a state dependent system, the proposed controller may be a candidate to the conventional SDRE based optimal controller if the system is slow varying with states. Though the controller is fast and easy to implement it is not able to cope with a fast varying system.   • An efficient inverse method for 1.he supersonic/hypersonic axisymmetric body design is developed for the parabolized Navier-Stokes equations. The developed method is examined numerically for three extreme testcases in the supersonic(M/sub ∞/=3.0) and hypersonic(M/sub ∞/=6.28) speeds. The first one is a negative pressure distribution near a vacuum pressure and the second one is a positive pressure distribution over the whole region of the body. The last one is the case of abrupt change of pressure distribution to zero in the forward region of the body. These testcases show the robustness of the method. By introducing a regular-falsi method and by using a not-fully converged inverse solution, the convergence behavior was greatly improved.

  • Horn rudders or flap rudders with a gap between forward and after part are used for effective steering of a ship or a submerged body. It is necessary to analyze the effect of a gap since it affects the performance of rudders. In this paper, an equation to calculate the lift acting on a two-dimensional flap rudder in uniform flow is derived by using the thin hydrofoil theory and the analytic solution of viscous flow in a channel formed by two coaxial cylindrical walls to which a pressure gradient is applied.

  • In this paper, we introduce a modified six-degrees-of-freedom parallel-link manipulator, which will be applied to the human vibration experiments. We analyze the inverse kinematics and workspace of this manipulator and comprehend the characteristics of kinematics analyzed. Additionally, solutions of forward kinematics are obtained through the iterative Newton-Raphson method known as one of the most used numerical analysis. Finally, dynamic equation of the manipulator is derived in closed form through the Newton-Euler approach, which will be used for the development of control software.

In this paper, we obtain some linearized oscillation theorems of (*) for $p_n\;{\in}\;(-{\infty},0)$ which are discrete results of the open problem by Gyori and Ladas.

  • We investigate a tansient diffusion approximation of queue size distribution in $M^{X}/G^{Y}/c$ system using the diffusion process with elementary return boundary. We choose an appropriate diffusion process which approxiamtes the queue size in the system and derive the transient solution of Kolmogorov forward equation of the diffusion process. We derive an approximation formula for the transient queue size distribution and mean queue size, and then obtain the stationary solution from the transient solution. Accuracy evalution is presented by comparing approximation results for the mean queue size with the exact results or simulation results numerically.

  • In this study, a new technique for atmospheric transmittance estimated from ALOS PRISM data is developed. It is based on satellite's observing radiances of different view angles and assumes that the cause of difference in radiances is the different view angles. The ALOS PRISM has three independent optical systems for viewing forward and backward and producing a stereoscopic image along the satellite's track. This stereo pair data can be used to estimate the transmittance according to the radiative transfer theory. This derived transmittance will be validated by the AERONET data and compared with the MODTRAN4 simulation results. Results show that the higher the land cover albedo, the better the derived transmittance compared to the AERONET data. Besides, this technique also shows the transmittance retrieval will be underestimated for the low land cover albedo.

  • This paper describes a development of Collision/grounding Strength Assessment System (COSAS) using simplified method. This method is formulated in closed-form equation by taking into account crushing caused by bulbous bow collision and cutting caused by forward speed grounding. To verify the accuracy of the developed system, some examples for test models of double side/bottom structure in collision/grounding situation are considered. This system might be useful for analysis of structural damage of oil tankers in collision/grounding.
