  • A large aspheric mirror is a key component for large astronomical telescopes and high resolution satellite cameras. Since it is large and has an aspheric form, it is much more difficult to fabricate it compared to the similar size of spherical mirror. Especially, the opto-mechanical design and analysis is critical to reduce the deformation of mirror surface due to the external forces such as gravity or temperature change, as the mirror size is larger and lightweighting ratio is increased. The design requirements for the mirror are different depending on the particular ground and space applications because the environmental conditions are changed. In this paper, we explain the opto-mechanical design and analysis for ground and space applications that are among the most difficult to achieve among several technologies related to development of the large aspheric mirror.

  • This paper discusses an optimization-based approach for the design of a product platform for industrial three-axis linear-type robots, which are widely used for handling objects in manufacturing lines. Since the operational specifications of these robots, such as operation speed, working distance and orientation, weight and shape of loads, etc., will vary for different applications, robotic system vendors must provide various types of robots efficiently and effectively to meet a range of market needs. A promising step toward this goal is the concept of a product platform, in which several key elements are commonly used across a series of products, which can then be customized for individual requirements. However the design of a product platform is more complicated than that of each product, due to the need to optimize the design across many products. This paper proposes an optimization-based fundamental framework toward the design of a product platform for industrial three-axis linear-type robots; this framework allows the solution of a complicated design problem and builds an optimal design method of fundamental features of robot frames that are commonly used for a wide range of robots. In this formulation, some key performance metrics of the robot are estimated by a reducedorder model which is configured with beam theory. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to represent the trade-offs among key design parameters using a weighted-sum form for a single product. This formulation is integrated into a mini-max type optimization problem across a series of robots as an optimal design formulation for the product platform. Some case studies of optimal platform design for industrial three-axis linear-type robots are presented to demonstrate the applications of a genetic algorithm to such mathematical models.

  • Compared to one made of glass, an aluminum mirror features light weight, compact design, low cost, and quick manufacturing. Reflective mirrors and supporting structures can be made from the same material, to improve the athermal performance of the system. With the rapid development of ultraprecise machining technologies, the field of applications for aluminum mirrors has been developed rapidly. However, most of them are rotationally symmetric in shape, and are used for infrared applications. In this paper, the design and manufacture of an off-axis aluminum mirror used for a three-mirror-anastigmat (TMA) optical system at visible wavelengths is presented. An optimized, lightweight design provides a weight reduction of more than 40%, while the surface deformation caused by earth's gravity can meet the required tolerance. The two pieces of an off-axis mirror can be diamond-turned simultaneously in one setup. The centrifugal deformation of the off-axis mirror during single-point diamond turning (SPDT) is simulated through the finite-element method (FEM). The techniques used to overcome centrifugal deformation are thoroughly described in this paper, and the surface error is reduced to about 1% of the original value. After post-polishing, the form error is $1/30{\lambda}$ RMS and the surface roughness is better than 5 nm Ra, which can meet the requirements for visible-light imaging.

  • Planing hull forms have significant influences on those hydrodynamic performances in calm water and in waves. Therefore, the hydrodynamic performance of a planing vessel should be predicted by model tests or theoretical calculations, and be confirmed whether it shows the performance requirements at the design stage. In this study, four planing hull forms are designed with the goal of the improvement of resistance and seakeeping performance, and 1/6.5 scale model tests are carried out in Seoul National University towing tank. The effects of design parameters such as length-to-beam ratio, deadrise angle and forebody shape on the hydrodynamic performance are investigated, based on model test results. Running attitude and resistance of model ships in calm water are also estimated by empirical formulae proposed by Savitsky (1964; 2007; 2012), and compared with the model test results. It is shown that calm water performance of non-prismatic planing hulls can be predicted well by Savitsky (2012)'s formula which improves the original Savitsky(1964/2007)'s formula by taking into account the variations of deadrise angles, and the actual angles between the hull bottom and the free surface.

  • UCP 600 approved at the Banking Commission Meeting of ICC at the end of October, 2006 comes into effect from July 1, 2007. The main revision of the UCP 600 concerning the sea transport document are as follows. First, if the bill of lading contains an on-board-notation, with the date of shipment, the date stated in the on-board-notation will be deemed the date of shipment. Secondly, phrases "on its face" and "otherwise authenticated" should be eliminated. Thirdly, when an agent signs for or signs on behalf of the master, there is no longer a need for the name of master to be quoted. Fourthly, the terminology "loading on-board or shipped on a named vessel" is changed to "shipped on-board a named vessel." Fifthly, phrases "the rejection of the documents transported only by sail" is removed. Finally, new rule in UCP is the signing of a charter party bill of lading by the charterer or a named agent on behalf of the charterer. My assessment of the revision in UCP 600 is as follows: Because a freight forwarder transport document is a weaker form than a liner bill of lading as collateral, banks may need a secure measure as to protect themselves from such a weak collateral effect. we recognize that Such a weak collateral effect stemmed from the elimination of rules in UCP 500 article 30, and the admission of transport documents issued by the freight forwarder as long as any one besides carrier, shipper, and charterer satisfies the requirements of transport document clauses in UCP 600. Finally, I hope the Commentary on UCP 600 will serve to explain the ambiguities remaining in the new rules.

  • In general the loads due to ocean wave are considered as main design parameters governing the global structural safety of VLFS (Very Large Floating Structure). In order to predict design wave loads accurately, hydro-elastic analysis must be conducted considering the initial global flexural rigidity of VLFS. However, in order to determine the structural scantling of major members (deck, bottom, side panels and longitudinal / transverse BHD etc.), static load and design wave loads must be given as explicit form generally. Therefore in order to determine a proper structural arrangement and scantlings of VLFS at initial design stage, both calculations of structural scantling and hydro-elastic analysis for wave conditions must be conducted iteratively and the convergence of their results must be checked. On this paper, based on the case design of a 500×300 m size's floating marina resort, the details of structural design technique using hydro-elastic analysis are explained and discussed. At first, the environmental conditions and the system requirements of the design of marina resort are described. The scantling formulas for the major members of pontoon type VLFS are proposed from the local and global design points of view. Considering the design wave loads as well as static design loads, the structural safety is checked iteratively.

  • According to the changes of the city's paradigm, the demand on u-City increases rapidly. u-City has been built at 54 areas in Korea (as of May 2009). One of the important determinants of success or failure in the increasing of u-City is how to provide u-Services. Most current u-Services are Sensor Network-based monitoring services to manage urban infrastructure. u-GIS is one of fundamental requirements to implement 'any time and any where' u-Service which covers the essential meaningful term "ubiquitous". Hence, in this paper, we 1) describe the definition of the spatial awareness, 2) discuss how to converge (Spatial Embedding) among different spatial data : topographic spatial data, sensor spatial data, and more, 3) bring forth an advanced form of u-Service, 4) analyze the state-of-the-art u-GIS techniques.

  • Weeks who is an architect in England suggest that let us consider the hospital architecture as not determined architecture but an undetermined architecture. Because it has been changing unexpectedly. The changing process of hospital architecture is required that it has to involve the new function and be a role model because of variations of environmental factors. For silving the requirements above mentioned, hospital architecture takes the way of appropriateness inner origin form and finally it considers new formation. The 53% of hospital buildings in Korea were built in 1980s. For 30years, these buildings have been not only extended a buildings but also changed in parts of functions and sizes on buildings which are original. The purpose of this study is producing the basic references which suggest solution to face on the changing of hospital building during planning it in the future using by analysis of variation inside the hospital building and grasping of characters in each departments. Each department is analyzed as follows. There is no inner change but only expansion partly by enlargement of building. In the outpatient, there is not only expansion by enlargement of building and but also extension toward other parts and the rate of variation of inside is high. In the diagnostic treatment, there are differences in diagnostic treatment. Surgical suit and diagnostic imaging have been expanded by enlargement than the change of inside. But the others of the departments have been changed by change of inside and also there are sometimes changes of inner walls.

  • There should be an arbitration agreement between concerned parties in order to resolve a dispute through arbitration. The arbitration procedures, including the selection of the arbitrator and the adjudicative rights of the arbitrator, are based on the arbitration agreement. In other words, the arbitration procedure and adjudication can be carried out within the boundaries of the arbitration agreement. Traditionally, the Doctrine of Separability of the arbitration agreement has been acknowledged in order to emphasize its importance and to clearly separate it from the contract. Today, when the Doctrine of Separability of the arbitration agreement is well established, overemphasizing this separability could hamper its effectiveness and the autonomy of the parties. Moreover, arbitration agreements in the past were required to be written, clarifying the existence of the agreement and determining the scope of its validity. Further, an arbitration agreement was considered as narrowly as possible. However, since arbitration has become a generalized resolution for disputes, the formal or content requirements should be reconsidered. In terms of validity, the subjective and objective scope should necessarily be extended as a means to resolve disputes related to an arbitration agreement and reduce the resolution cost and duration. Under this perspective, the arbitration theory should now focus on arbitration agreements rather than the place of arbitration. We should break from the nationalistic view, which understands that the arbitration system is a part of the national legal system and that arbitration is allowed solely by permission of the nation. Instead, we should extensively reinterpret the subject of arbitration agreement and its range of effects so that disputes can be resolved between the concerned parties under a single procedure and norm, a necessary step forward. Moreover, in spite of the positive contribution and role of the New York Convention toward the establishment and development of the international arbitration system, there should be an effort to overcome its deterioration. As mentioned in the recommendations regarding the interpretation of the arbitration agreement in the New York Convention in 2006, we should begin by striving to match the Convention as a means of interpretation with the changes of the twenty-first century. Ultimately, we should meet the demands of the new era through amendments to the Convention.

  • The difficulties in implementing of image processing algorithms are a major reason for the lack of research into algorithm comparison. This fact makes an image processing research with difficult. We conclude that it is important to represent algorithms in form of reusable code. Since current image processing systems do not fulfill all requirements we must pose on reusable implementations, we propose to solve the reuse problem by applying generic programming. We define two dimensional iterators, which mediate between image processing algorithms and their underlying data structures, so that the same algorithm implementation can be applied to any number of different image formats. The elegance and efficiency of this approach is illustrated by a number of useful examples and demonstrated by porting in existing image processing algorithm IDE(Integrated Development Environment).
