  • The microstructural evolution during mechanical alloying of Nb and Sn powders, of average composition Nb3Sn, has been investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Observations by SEM showed a progressive change of milling time. From the XRD studies, the structural development with milling time depends on the ball size for a given powder/ball ratio. Using a larger ball of 9.5mm diameter, the elemental powders initially alloy mechanically to form an A15 structure phase, and then amorphised with continued milling. However, in case of milling with a smaller ball of 3.968mm diameter, an amorphous phase is first formed. These results can be understood by considering the dependence of the milling energy on the ball size. The homogeneous stoichiometric $Nb_3Sn$ phase could be easily obtained by heat treatment of a supersaturated solid solution produced by MA. Heat treatment of an amorphous phase formed by MA resulted in the mixture of the $Nb_3Sn$ and $Nb_6Sn_5$ phases.

  • Two marine species of family Callyspongiidae, Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. and Siphonochalina truncata, were collected from Chujado Island and Jejudo Island, Korea during 2005-2007. Callyspongia mookriensis n. sp. is similar to Callyspongia flabelliformis Tanita, 1968 in type of spicule, habitat and growth form but differs in spicule and mesh size. The new species has longer oxea and broader mesh than Callyspongia flabelliformis's. The overall shape and skeleton of Siphonochalina truncata are nearly identical with specimens described by Lindgren (1897).

  • The structural evolution during the thermal treatment of $70SiO_2-3OTiO_2(mole%)$ sol-gel derived powders and films was investigated by FT-IR, Raman and XPS, and XRD. From these results, the $TiO_2-rich$ regions involving $Ti^{4+}$ ions in octahedral coordination were confirmed to be amorphous at $600^{\circ}C$. However, Raman spectra along with XRD patterns indicated that at high temperature (above $700^{\circ}C)$, the amorphous $TiO_2was$ segregating to form anatase crystal. Also, the effect of experimental variables such as thermal treatment, heating rate and exposure to water vapor on structural changes, refractive index and thickness of the film coated on sodalime-silicate glass were investigated.

  • A new marine sponges, Mycale (Carmia) ieoensis n. sp., of the family Mycalidae was collected SCUBA diving in June 2017 from Ieodo Ocean Research Station, Korea. M. (C.) ieoensis n. sp. is encrusting to irregular massive type, yellow in life. This new species is similar to M. nullarosette Hoshino, 1981 in color and growth form but it differs in spicule size and sigma shape. Spicule size of M. (C.) ieoensis n. sp. smaller than that M. nullarosette. Also, M. (C.) ieoensis n. sp. has two size toxa, but M. nullarosette is not. The new species are compared to other Mycale species from the Korean region, and similar species from elsewhere.

  • GROWTH-REGULATING FACTORs (GRFs) are sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factors that regulate various aspects of plant growth and development. GRF proteins interact with a transcription cofactor, GRF-INTERACTING FACTOR (GIF), to form a functional transcriptional complex. For its activities, the GRF-GIF duo requires the SWITCH2/SUCROSE NONFERMENTING2 chromatin remodeling complex. One of the most conspicuous roles of the duo is conferring the meristematic potential on the proliferative and formative cells during organogenesis. GRF expression is post-transcriptionally down-regulated by microRNA396 (miR396), thus constructing the GRF-GIF-miR396 module and fine-tuning the duo's action. Since the last comprehensive review articles were published over three years ago, many studies have added further insight into its action and elucidated new biological roles. The current review highlights recent advances in our understanding of how the GRF-GIF-miR396 module regulates plant growth and development. In addition, I revise the previous view on the evolutionary origin of the GRF gene family.

  • The subgenus Idioglochina Alexander, 1921 belongs to the genus Dicranomyia Stephen, 1829 and has a special habitat unlike other congeners. The larval stage inhabits marine algae near the intertidal zones. The most distinctive characters are found in the antennae with inner face of flagellar segments extended to produce a serrate form. A total of 30 species of the subgenus Idioglochina are recorded with the distribution is restricted to the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. In this study, the subgenus and its species D. (I.) tokara (Nobuchi, 1955) are newly added to the Korean fauna. This species was previously recorded in Japan as an endemic species, but it was collected from Jeju Island. A redescription, period of activity, habitat information, and photographs of diagnostic characters of the species are provided. The female ovipositor is photographed for the first time.

  • The effect of some thiosemicarbazide derivatives on corrosion of aluminium in 2M sodium hydroxide has been studied using thermometric, weight loss and hydrogen evolution techniques. The rate of the corrosion depends on the nature of the inhibitor and its concentration, heated of hydrogenation, mode of interaction with the metal surface and formation of metallic complexes. The compounds are weakly adsorbed on the surface of aluminium and form a monolayer of the adsorbate. Values of the Arrhenius activation energies indicate agreement with those obtained for an activation controlled process.

  • Four new species of genus Scalarispongia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) are described from Jejudo Island, Korea. These new species of Scalarispongia are compared with 14 reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure. Scalarispongia songakensis n. sp. is similar to S. lenis in sponge shape but differs in skeletal structure and meshes are not divided into two sections. The length of secondary fibres between primary fibres of this new species is much longer than S. lenis'. Scalarispongia radicula n. sp. is resembles S. songakensis in sponge shape, but this new species has pseudo-tertiary fibres at the sponge base. Scalarispongia maraensis n. sp. is very similar to S. subjiensis in sponge shape but primary fibres of this new species are not simple because fibres have wide webbing. Scalarispongia massa n. sp. is characterized by the large mass sponge shape and numerous open oscules form a long ling on the ridge of the sponge.

  • To help solving intractable nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) of waves in the field of fluid dynamics we develop an algorithm to find new high order solutions of the class of Abel, Bernoulli, Chini and Riccati equations of the form y' = ayn + by + c, n > 1, with constant coefficients a, b, c. The role of this class of equations in NLEEs is explained in the introduction below. The basic algorithm to compute the coefficients of the power series solutions of the class, emerged long ago and is further developed in this paper. Practical application for hitherto unknown solutions is exemplified.
