  • The purpose of this study is to identify land use types and to develop and evaluate biotope maps for Gangseo-Gu (ward) in Busan Metropolitan City, South Korea, using the Degree of Hemeroby. Hemeroby is a measurement concept or tool to assess the magnitude of human impact on ecosystems. Gangseo-Gu is the second largest Gu in Busan and is under strong development pressure. Before the field survey, biotopes were pre-classified based on digital maps, aerial photos and high-resolution satellite images. The method employed in biotope survey and mapping was adopted from the modified method used in Seoul, which carried out the first biotope mapping in Korea in 2000. In the field survey, a comprehensive biotope mapping method was used. The results showed that the total surface area of biotopes in Gangseo-gu was $172,620,207m^2$(42,655 acres) and there were 29 biotope types with 13,631 polygons. The ratio of urban or built-up area 22.6% and the remaining areas were forest and open spaces, of which 22.6% were actual forest areas and 35.6% were paddy fields and other field areas. The Hemeroby Index of Gangseo-gu was 54.7, which suggests that Gangseo-gu has not yet been developed extensively and needs a long-term conservation and coordinated development plan.

  • In this study the stem analysis program, which can be operated with personal computer was developed to reduce time and cost of calculation, and to increase accuracy of analysis. The stem analysis method used in this program was compared with other methods. The results obtained were as follows : The value, 1/100mm measured from the latest annual ring measurement machine (Jahrringme${\beta}$geraete Johan Type II) was automatically inputed to the computer and saved into given file name. Turbo Pascal program was written to do this. The measured data was analyzed by stem analysis calculation program written by Fortran-77. Volume and height increments were approximated by spline function, and diameter of the stem disk was calculated by quadratic mean method. The increment values calculated by the programs were printed annually and in every five-year. Stem analysis diagram and several increment graphs were also easily printed. The result compared between those analysis methods showed that quadratic mean could reduce the error caused from eccentric pith. When the stem taper curve method, approximated by spline function, was used in the calculation of tree height and volume, increments would be more exactly calculated.

  • This study was conducted investigate population size and habitat use for the conservation and management of the endangered long-tailed goral in the Seoraksan National Park using feces and camera trap during 2010 to 2014 (track survey, camera trap). As a result of feces tracking and camera trap, its population size was estimated as 160 (camera trap)~251 (feces) individuals in the Seoraksan National Park. The goral prefer $35^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$ (slope), 600~700m (elevation), NE (aspect), 0~50m (distance to stream), 300~600m (distance to road) and bread-leaved forest (forest type) according to field tracking of fecal. Based on field camera trap, we estimated the age classes of goral populations and activity of gorals during day-time (07-18 time, 56.5%) and night-time (18-07 time, 43.5%). Such analyses of population size and habitat use of the goral could be applied as important fundamental data for conservation of gorals and management of their habitats.

  • This study was performed for the purpose of determining the effects of distribution of the lateral earth pressure in the case of sloping backfills of being consisted of the idealized cohesionless fragmental masses. The displacements were classified as eight types by D_UBROVA (by patterns). B type among these has its turning point at the top of the wall, moves outwardly and is significant to gravitational structure because of its foundation elasticity which causes displacement. Therefore, it might be surely acknowledged that the resultant, follows; $$E=1/2{\cdot}rH^2\frac{sin(u-{\varepsilon})cos({\alpha}+{\varepsilon})}{cos(u+{\alpha})}{\cdot}cot(u+{\rho})(t/m^3)$$, is appropriate for applying it to the designing of the sand-catch dams. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Lateral earth pressure is proportional to the square of the wall heights. 2. The coefficient(K) is directly proportional to the sloping of backfill surface and inversely proportional to the displacement. 3. The distribution of the pressure looks like parabola, curve of second order (Fig. 5, b). 4. The distribution of the pressure strength looks like that of hydrostatic pressure (Fig. 5, c).

  • Three clones of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. grandidentata have been tested for susceptibility to Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains A281 and A348. We determined the optimum concentration of kanamycin sulfate for effective selection of leaf disc-derived, transgenic tissues transformed using Agrobacterium binary vector pGA472 containing a neomycin phosphotransferase gene (NPT-II) which confers kanamycin resistance. Of the wild type Ti plasmids contained by the two Agrobacterium strains, pTiBo542 of strain A281 appears to be best suited to serve as a helper plasmid for binary vector systems. A relatively low concentration (10mg/l) of kanamycin sulfate inhibited adventitious shoot initiation from leaf discs on regeneration medium. Transformed kanamycin-resistant calli were obtained by culturing Agrobacterium inoculated leaf discs on selective regeneration medium. The transformed kanamycin-resistant calli continued to grow on regeneration media supplemented with kanamycin sulfate to levels of 50 and 200mg/l. The growth of non-co-cultivated control calli was severely inhibited on regeneration medium containing 50mg/l kanamycin sulfate.

  • The use of meteorological information is essential in the industrial society. More specialized weather services are required to perform better industrial activities including forestry. A topoclimatological technique, in this study, which makes use of empirical relationships between the topography and the weather in Cheju Island was applied to produce reasonable estimates of monthly air temperatures over remote land area where routine observations are rare. Altitude values of the 250m grid points were first read from a 1 : 25000 topographic map. The mean altitude and other valuable topographical variables were then determined for each $1km^2$ land area. Daily minimum, maximum and mean air temperature data were collected from 19 points in Cheju Island from June 1987 to September 1988. The data were analyzed and grouped into 36 sets by type of air temperature and by month. Each of data set was regressed to the topographical variables to delineate empirical relationships between the local air temperature and the site topography. The total of 36 regression equations were finally selected and the equations were used to calculate the monthly air temperature for each $1km^2$ land area. The outputs were presented in a fine-mesh grid map with a 6-level contour capability.

  • The roadkill that animals die after bumping by vehicles on the roads is acting as a factor to decrease the size of various animal populations. It has also been known to be the biggest artificial causations of Vertebrata deaths not only in urban areas but also protected areas such as national parks. Nevertheless, in the national park areas which are major protected national areas for conservation of national biodiversity and ecological diversity, snake roadkills occur frequently. Up to date, related studies are rare. Therefore, in this study, we described snake roadkill patterns on the roads in six national parks between 2006 and 2015. We identified total 736 snake roadkills compromising 10 different species. Five species, Rhabdophis lateralis, Elaphe dione, Gloydius ussuriensis, Lycodon rufozonatus, Gloydius brevicaudus occupied more than 91.7% of total roadkill cases. Active forager snakes were killed by roadkills more than ambush foragers, and the snake roadkill frequency was the highest in September, a migration period and in August when the young individuals dispersed at between 100 and 799 m altitude areas. Roads where roadkills were frequent lie between forest and hydrosphere or between forest and crop field road sides. Our results could be used to identify the trend of snake roadkills on the roads in national parks, and to establish effective roadkill mitigation measures and policies.

  • In the result of effect on freezing damage reduction by the shade net colors and the shade rate to tea trees during wintering period, the high shade ratio decreased tea trees growth and increased freezing damage and 55% of shade ratio based on non treatment developed new leafs and green leaf productivity. By the shade net colors, colorless shade net (55% of shade type) treatment and green shade net treatment increased green leaf productivity and decreased damaged area compare to non treatment shade net and black shade net treatment. Colorless net shade treatment reduced over 50% of freezing damage and increased (10a) 68 kg for green leaf productivity compare to non treatment shade net. The colors of shade net treatments for reduction freezing damaged in order of Black < Green < Colorless but reduction of freezing damage was so high. In the relative microclimates, treatment shade nets were $0.7^{\circ}C$ lower, average relatively humidity 14.9% higher, soil temperature $0.6^{\circ}C$ lower and soil moisture 4.6% higher than non treatment shade net. And treatment shade nets decreased average wind speed 0.7 m/s and it showed us treatment net shades effected to excessive evapotranspiration and soil dry by wind and considered one of good solution for freezing damages.

  • A series of the studies on the applied physical properties of domestic species have been conducted last three years. Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi were two of the three species examined for the first year. Because the same apparatus and experimental procedures were used for all species, their results can be easily comparable. The experiments for sorption property were conducted with 20- and 80-mesh wood powder and resulted in their EMCs and sorption isotherms at various RH conditions. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and electric resistance and volumetric electric resistivity were measured with a thermal-wire device and a high electric resistance meter. The differences in the thermal and electric properties between quarter- and flat-sawn specimens were observed, which were partially attributed to their anatomical differences. An acoustic measurement system was used to evaluate dynamic MOE and internal friction. This paper provides the useful fundamental data for designing a wood structure, correcting a portable resistance-type moisture meter, and acoustic properties of wood.

  • This survey was carried out to investigate the characteristics of low temperature injury in rice plants at a southwestern alpine area of Korea in 2003. During vegetative, reproductive, and ripening stage in a southwestern alpine area, mean air temperature was lower by 0.4, 3.1 and $1.7^{\circ}C$, respectively, as compared to those of a normal year, Minimum air temperature during the reproductive and ripening stage was lower by 2.6 and $1.7^{\circ}C$, respectively, as compared to those of a normal year, Sunshine hours during vegetative, reproductive, and ripening stage were lower by 40.6, 81.3 and 8.4 hours, respectively, than those of a normal year. Spikelet-sterility type cold injury occurred from the latter part of June to the middle of July, which is from panicle formation stage to meiosis stage, at temperatures less than $17^{\circ}C$. Spikelet sterility under normal transplanting (May 20) ranged from 16 to 58%, which was lower than that under early transplanting in the latter part of April (29 to 83%). The total area impacted by cold damage was 2,723ha in Namwon, 510ha in Sunchang, 300ha in Jinan, 250ha in Muju, and 210ha in Jangsu. Average spiklet sterility in these regions was 44%. Rice cultivars Odaebyeo, Unbongbyeo, and Jinbubyeo showed greater tolerance to low temperature than CV, Chugwangbyeo.
