In Korea, 'forest welfare' is officially included as a policy object and used as an academic term. The Korea Forest Service strives to provide a forest welfare services suitable for each life cycle from birth to death, and the public is highly aware of the need for these policies. The demand for National Woodland Burial Grounds is expected to increase as the interest in natural burials including woodland burial is increasing. As the demand for the Woodland Burial Grounds is increasing, there is only one National Woodland Burial Grounds currently available. Although other forest welfare facilities, such as natural recreation forests, must have undergone feasibility assessment according to relevant laws before approval of the designation, there are no institutions performing Woodland Burial Grounds feasibility assessments at the time. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the policies to cope with the increased demand. This study used GIS to prepare the basic data to be used in the process of selecting suitable forest locations. The area that cannot be used according to related laws was analyzed and the size of the possible areas in the state forests was assessed.

In 2021, severely infected trees showing distinct symptoms including branch dieback, necrotic lesions on branches, cankers on the shoots, and dark brown discoloration on the stem on Hovenia dulcis were found in the provincial forest of Jeollabuk-do located in Jangsu, South Korea. The causal agent of the pathogen was identified as Botryosphaeria dothidea based on morphology and sequence comparisons. This is the first confirmed report of B. dothidea causing branch dieback and canker on H. dulcis.
This research analyzed job satisfaction for improvement in job satisfaction of forest interpreters and effective management. Interpreters felt satisfied with their job with a mean satisfaction score 3.41 out of 5 but unsatisfied with pay and job benefits. Job satisfaction showed significant differences in interpreting field, agencies and working period. Results from factor analysis, job satisfaction classified into four factors; team atmosphere, level of compensation, job conflict and working environment. And interpreters more satisfied in team atmosphere and working condition than level of compensation and job conflict. Also this study showed related variables to job satisfaction. Team atmosphere was related with working period and agency, the level of compensation was also related with agency and the working environment is in relation to agency and interpreting field.
In 1922, Hongneung forest was established to support the study of Korean forestry. Nowadays the forest also plays a role as urban forest which provides a green space for local people. This paper proposes the better management plan of Hongneung forest based on visitor monitoring. On-site surveys with a structured questionnaire were carried out from August to November in 2014 and total 750 data were analyzed. The survey results are as follows: 1) Visitors were inclusive of all age groups and most of them lived nearby Hongneung forest, 2) Visitors used the forest mainly for recreational purposes and recognized the forest as 'Green space' rather than 'experimental forest', 3) Visitors had great satisfaction from the forest visit and raised the necessity of more environment education and promotion of the program. Based on the results, the following solutions have been suggested: 1) Environment education will help visitors to raise awareness on the importance of Hongneung forest which plays a role as both experimental and urban forest, 2) Systematic visitor monitoring can contribute to efficient visitor management and administration of the areas. In conclusion, it is necessary to establish a visitor management system that enable to achieve a harmonization between nature conservation and recreational demands as well as to improve management of natural resource and service.

The demand for National Woodland Burial Grounds is expected to increase as interest in natural burial, including woodland burial, is increasing. This study was performed to provide evaluation criteria applying weighting factors to the evaluation for location selection. Through literature review, location selection evaluation factors for forest facilities, similar to forest welfare facilities, were reviewed and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, 74 preliminary evaluation criteria were selected. Based on the results, three expert groups (public servants in central and local governments and other public agencies in charge of forest welfare facility, related field researchers, and civil experts) reviewed the preliminary evaluation factors. Evaluation factors were classified into two categories, 6 sub-categories, and 22 segments. The selected evaluation factors were layered for the second preference survey. They were classified into Forest Environment and Human Environment, and those categories were further classified into three categories. Then they were further classified into segments. After segmentation, the experts who participated in the first survey checked the differences in the significance of the layered factors by utilizing AHP. The site evaluation criteria table was prepared using the evaluation criteria and the significance of each layer. In order to apply it to the candidate sites, 10 sites including the existing National Woodland Burial Grounds and 9 candidate sites considered in the previous studies were compared and analyzed including Ulju County Ulsan City, Suncheon City Jeollanam-do and Janggun-myeon Sejeong City.
The average income of forestry household was only 54.3% of urban workers's and 67.6% of farms household's income based on the data from statistics Korea in 2012. This indicates that forestry, which is a labor-intensive primary industry, has the limitation for creating added value. On the other hand, the demands for forest healing and forest experiential program have been continuously increased with new lifestyle focusing on the quality of life and increased leisure time. Therefore, it is necessary to establish comprehensive policies to increase added value except forestry to respond forest demands. The project utilizing forest healing can be on of solutions to meet forest demands. Thus, this research intends to investigate an economic revitalization plan for mountain villages with forest healing. The characteristics of forest healing facilities and contents of forest healing programs were examined through internet searching, fields surveys, and expert interviews. Total 186 concepts, 8 categories, and 24 subcategories were derived from raw data of surveys. The application process of forest healing was also provided to encourage local economy of mountain areas. This research offers application procedure of the forest healing for regional economic vitalization in Mountain Villages interviews using grounded theory by Strauss and Corbin(1988) as well as NVio11. This research contributes to prepare the base of future quantitative studies by providing strategies and suggestions for the application plans of forest healing programs. In addition, this research offers basic data for the policies to establish and manage forest healing villages.
The first purpose of this study is the verification of hypothesis on Abies holophylla planted as a guardian for Japanese. Second, the purpose of this study is on Abies holophylla planted in the historic sites for anti-Japan fighter. Japan planted Abies holophylla to honor the god of Suwataisha that took care of the Jingu-Kogo's Conquest of Samhan(Three Kingdoms). The fact that Abies holophylla was planted in the historic sites for anti-Japan fighter such as General Gwon Yul, Yi Sun-Shin was investigated. The hypothesis that Abies holophylla was planted as a guardian for Japanese was verified through survey on the pictures of Abies holophylla in Japanese temple, public sites, company of nursing the saplings, commemorative tree of governor and the judgment of Abies holophylla damage incident. Further studies should focus on the intention of planting Abies holophylla by Japan. Researcher should discuss Abies holophylla planted in the historic sites for anti-Japan fighter because old big trees will be respected.
We analyzed the observed characteristics of monoterpene and developed an empirical formula for monoterpene concentration in the pine-dominated mixed forest of the National Center for Forest Therapy. Monoterpene was measured at 0800, 1200 and 1700 LST once a month using sorbent tube sampling coupled with thermal desorption gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Monoterpene concentration is low in winter and shows a maximum in June and July. The major components of monoterpene are alpha-pinene, camphene and beta-pinene. During the warm period from May to November, monoterpene concentration is higher at 0800 and 1700 LST than at 1200 LST. The empirical formula takes into account the vegetation variables, temperature-controlled emission, oxidation processes and dilution by wind. The vegetation variable accounts for the difference in observed monoterpene concentration between two sites. The observed monoterpene concentration normalized by the vegetation variable increases exponentially with air temperature. The oxidation process explains the lower monoterpene concentration at 1200 LST than at 0800 and 1700 LST during the warm period. The monoterpene estimates using the empirical formula shows a correlation of 0.52 with the observation for the development period (2018~2020), while it shows a correlation of 0.72 for the validation year (2021). Such higher correlation for the validation year than for the development period is due to the fact that variability of monoterpene concentration is better explained by air temperature in 2021 than in the development period. However, the developed formula underestimates the monoterpene concentration in May and June, showing the limitation in accurately capturing the monthly variation of monoterpene.
The purpose of this study is to identify landscape paintings of our ancestors in types and characteristics of beautiful natural scenery. In this study, 629 landscape paintings targeted natural scenery of the Joseon Dynasty period are used and classified into types of natural scenery by main target of paintings. This study was carried out to know how erosion control function of forests varies as forests develop in watersheds. The erosion control function among the forest welfare functions can be estimated by comparing sediment yield in stocked with non-stocked area. Sediment yield of reservoirs in stocked area were collected from farmland improvement associations. The sediment yields in non-stocked area were using USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) in the same reservoirs. Forests' erosion control function estimated by differences of the sediment yield between stocked and non-stocked area was static model because of no consideration on forest aging. Dynamic model was developed to consider a forest stand age. The model comprises the relationship between average forest age in watershed and sediment yield. The amount of sediment yield was different depending mother rocks. It decreased exponentially according to the forest's grow up. In case of igneous rock, the volume of sediment yield $Y_{ig}=1.4431e\;^{0.023x}$(x=average forest age), metamorphic rock $Y_{me}=4.7115e\;^{0.0694x}$, and sedimentary rock $Y_{se}=1.2808e\;^{0.028x}$.
