Recent developments in sensor technologies have provided remotely sensed data with very high spatial resolution. In order to fully utilize the potential of high resolution images, new image classification strategies are necessary. Unfortunately, the high resolution images increase the spectral within-field variability, and the classification accuracy of traditional methods based on pixel-based classification algorithms such as Maximum-Likelihood method may be decreased (Schiewe 2001). Recent development in Object Oriented Classification based on image segmentation algorithms can be used for the classification of forest patches on rugged terrain of Korea. The objectives of this paper are as follows. First, to compare the pros and cons of image classification methods based on pixel-based and object oriented classification algorithm for the forest patch classification. Landsat ETM+ data and IKONOS data will be used for the classification. Second, to investigate ways to increase classification accuracy of forest patches. Supplemental data such as DTM and Forest Type Map of 1:25,000 scale are used for topographic correction and image segmentation. Third, to propose the best classification strategy for forest patch classification in terms of accuracy and data requirement. The research site for this paper is Namhansansung Provincial Park located at the eastern suburb of Seoul Metropolitan City for its diverse forest patch types and data availability. Both Landsat ETM+ and IKONOS data are used for the classification. Preliminary results can be summarized as follows. First, topographic correction of reflectance is essential for the classification of forest patches on rugged terrain. Second, object oriented classification of IKONOS data enables higher classification accuracy compared to Landsat ETM+ and pixel-based classification. Third, multi-stage segmentation is very useful to investigate landscape ecological aspect of forest communities of Korea.
We surveyed the total 30 sites in Gilgol, Nae Sorak for the patterns of the natural regeneration of the korean fir in connection with the characteristic of the stand. The natural regeneration in a forestrical meaning is not found in natural forest but mainly in the anthropogenically already disturbed area. It may be inferred from this fact that the anthropogenic disturbance can give more better condition for a natural regeneration. The regeneration phase in the natural forest is not so distinctive as the artificial forest, and shows itself transiently. And it may be also said that a shift in generation is only a part of the change of the stand phase. The concept of the natural regeneration will lose its meaning, in so far as the patch dynamic determines the phase of the stand, and the main tree species are shade-tolerant abies.
This study was conducted to identify seed inflow characteristics according to harvest typeand to provide basic data for developing a regeneration technology for secondary growth forests in Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) succession forest formation by natural regeneration. Experimental sites were established by applying seed tree (single and group) and clear-cutting methods (10- 20- 30-m strip and 20- 30- 40-m patch). The seed inflow characteristics of the natural regeneration site were analyzed for 6 years from 2014. Most seeds were flowed to the regeneration stand from October to November. In years with good seed fructification, more than 80% were flowed in October. The average annual seed inflow by harvest type was highest in the seed tree area (296,000 seeds/ha/yr), followed by the 20-m patch clear-cutting area (291,000 seeds/ha/yr) and 10-m strip clear-cutting area (281,000 seeds/ha/yr). The distribution uniformity of seed inflow according to treatment was analyzed in the order of the 20-m strip clear-cutting area (52.2), 20-m patch clear-cutting area (52.9), and 10-m strip clear-cutting area (56.1). As a result, the 10-m strip and 20-m patch clear-cutting areas with relatively small harvest areas showed high seed inflow and distribution uniformity.
Myanmar(Burma) has been preserved valuable environmental resources because of its political isolation. But recently, Myanmar has moved a capital city(Naypyidaw) at central forest area and it has been urbanized radically since 2005. In this paper, we built multi-temporal land cover map from Landsat images of 1970s to 2012 with ENVI 4.5 software. For a broad approach, administrative district Yamethin which includes Naypyidaw is classified into 3 classes and with only Naypyidaw region is classified with 4-5 classes to analyse specific changes. And with forest cover extracted by Object Oriented Classification, we evaluated forest fragmentation before and after the development using Patch Analyst(FRAGSTATs 3.3) at Yamethin area. For Yamethin area, there were significant forest cover change, 51% in 1999 to 48% in 2012, and for Naypyidaw area, 67% in 1999 to 57% in 2012 respectively. Also landscape indices resulted from Patch Analyst concluded that the total edge, edge density and mean shaped index of forest patches increased and total core area is decreased. It is attributed from land cover change with urbanization and agricultural land expansion.

Daejeon is a large city in Korea and very high-speedly developing city. Recently urban area is expanding and large forest patch is fragmenting into small habitats because of urban sprawl. The fragmentation of large forest patch decreases the size of habitats and increases the loss of biodiversity in urban area. This study is to analysis the connectivity of green space of Daejeon metropolitan city, and suggest the optimum location of greening site and corridor in order to increase the connectivity of green space of Daejeon metropolitan city. The findings of this study are as follows; (1) The result of this study showed that ${\alpha}$ and ${\gamma}$ index are -0.24 and 0.20. A ${\alpha}$ index is very low and a ${\gamma}$ index is relatively low. (2) The dispersion was very high, for urban forest patches were isolated through fragmentation. Therefore, it needed ecological corridors in order to connect the patches. (3) A urban streams were very important in connectivity of urban green space. Urban riparian corridor must be preserved and restored. (4) A urban green space policy and planning must be prepared to increase the connectivity and assessment of alternatives must be accomplished from perspective of connectivity. The results of this study show the practical implications in perspective of green space planning and policy in Daejeon metropolitan city. The suggestions by findings of this study are to connect green space between large forest patch in urban fringe and island green space in inner city. Also, It is required that urban stream is restored to natural feature for use of corridor by wildlife.
To prevent large patch disease, caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2, in zoysiagrass a fungicide, Tebuconazole and three microbial agents Streptomyces sp. Burkholderia sp. and Streptomyces sp. S8 were applied in commercial turfgrass cultivation field in Sanchung, Gyeongnam, Korea. All treatments showed 50% reduced the pathogen population in thatch layer throughout the yearly cultivation period. Not only reduced the pathogen population, Tebuconazole, Streptomyces sp. Burkholderia sp. and Streptomyces sp. S8 treatment also enhanced turfgrass growth, chlorophyll and proline content. Malondialdehyde contents in each treatment was reduced from 6.2~28.9% when compared with the control. Taken together, reduction of pathogen population in soil lowered the disease incidence or severity, and allowed the turfgrass developed as normal condition. The results suggested that the selected microbial agents may use as biological control and growth promotion agents for the Zoysia turfgrass.

This study was conducted in order to recommend forest-based wildlife protection areas in Chung-nam Province using several basic habitat conditions. The conditions used in this study were the forest patch size with the potential to keep wildlife animals safe, the distance from water sources, and the availability of food for wildlife. The fractal dimension index was also used to find the edge line dynamics, which can influence on habitat conditions for edge species. The natural conservation management indices including a forest map (indicating the level of forest age), a slope map, and an elevation map were used to find the forest patches with enough space for wildlife to live on. Water resources and their buffer areas were considered as factors to protect the space as an ecological corridor. Deciduous trees and trees mixed with deciduous trees and conifers were chosen to provide wildlife animals their food. In total, 525 forest patches were chosen and recommended for the wildlife protection area. Five of these forest patches were recommended as wildlife protection areas managed by the provincial government. The other 520 forest patches were recommended to protect local wildlife animals and be managed by each county or city. These forest patches were located around the Geum-buk and Geum-nam mountains, and the forest patches are important resources as habitats to keep wildlife in the area. An ecological network consists of these separate forest patches with the ecological integration. A fractal dimension index was used to divide forest patches into several categories in order to find how patches are shaped. The forest patches with longer edges or more irregular shapes have a much higher possibility of being inhabited by various types of edge species. Through comparison of the wildlife protection areas recommended in this study to the current wildlife protection areas, we recognized that the current wildlife protection areas need boundary adjustments in order for wildlife animals to survive by themselves with water sources and food.
We evaluated the landscape ecological value of selected minefields and wetland patches as a habitat of the forest bird community. The avian fauna of three minefields of 8.5ha, 17.4ha, and 40.6ha were evaluated by comparing that of three control sites of mountain area. Average number of forest bird species, number of individuals, species diversity index, species richness, and species evenness were analyzed according to the size of patch and environmental characteristics such as the presence of wetland and connectivity. Community similarity was evaluated between test and control plots. Avian fauna can be summarized as follows. First, 63 species were recorded, and the sum of maximum counts was 828 individuals. Species diversity index was 3.8, and the species richness was 9.2. Species evenness was 93.3. Second, small, isolated forest patch had a low average number of species and individuals as expected. But, small forest patches with streams had higher bird density than patches without water surface. Third, forest patches with marsh wetland were evaluated as lower habitat quality than forest patches with stream wetland in terms of the number of bird species per unit area, number of individuals per unit area, species diversity index, species richness index, and species evenness. Finally, Community similarity of the small forest patches with streams was similar with large connected forest. As a result, lowland forest patch was shown the good quality for the forest bird community in spite of small extents, and community structure was similar with mountain forest bird community. Thus, riparian forest restoration could improve the biodiversity of the forest bird community.

Measuring and mapping connectivity among habitats is a key component of sustainable urban planning and design process. In this study, we examined how functional corridors connect forest bird habitats in a metropolitan area of Korea using graph theory-based techniques. High-quality forest habitat was defined as a function of forest cover, presence of residential areas, and road networks. We then constructed a network of high-quality forest habitats using the FunConn (functional connectivity) tools, and computed metrics ($T_i$) of patch importance based on the minimum ($Q_1$) and the 25th percentile ($Q_{25}$) rank least-cost distance values. We investigated the relative influence of two values of patch importance on forest bird species richness. As a result, the patch importance index based on the $Q_{25}$ effective distance threshold was most positively correlated with species richness (P < 0.001) after controlling for the area effect. Thus, using the $Q_{25}$ effective distance threshold, we mapped not only the locations of important habitat patches and functional corridors, but also the network backbone of forest bird habitats. The network developed in this study can help guide urban planning for biodiversity conservation.

Face sketch synthesis plays an important role in public security and digital entertainment. In this paper, we present a novel face sketch synthesis method via local similarity and nonlocal similarity regularization terms. The local similarity can overcome the technological bottlenecks of the patch representation scheme in traditional learning-based methods. It improves the quality of synthesized sketches by penalizing the dissimilar training patches (thus have very small weights or are discarded). In addition, taking the redundancy of image patches into account, a global nonlocal similarity regularization is employed to restrain the generation of the noise and maintain primitive facial features during the synthesized process. More robust synthesized results can be obtained. Extensive experiments on the public databases validate the generality, effectiveness, and robustness of the proposed algorithm.
