  • Detecting the damage of indeterminate trusses is of major importance in the literature. This paper proposes a quick approach in this regard, utilizing a precise mathematical approach based on Finite Element Method. Different to a general two-step method defined in the literature essentially based on optimization approach, this method consists of three steps including Damage-Suspected Element Identification step, Imminent Damaged Element Identification step, and finally, Damage Severity Detection step and does not need any optimizing algorithm. The first step focuses on the identification of damage-suspected elements using an index based on modal residual force vector. In the second step, imminent damage elements are identified among the damage-suspected elements detected in the previous step using a specific technique. Ultimately, in the third step, a novel relation is derived to calculate the damage severity of each imminent damaged element. To show the efficiency and quick function of the proposed method, three examples including a 25-bar planar truss, a 31-bar planar truss, and a 52-bar space truss are studied; results of which indicate that the method is innovatively capable of suitably detecting, for indeterminate trusses, not only damaged elements but also their individual damage severity by carrying out solely one analysis.

  • The nonlinear characteristics for hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method. especially, ″Force-state Mapping Technique″, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.

  • In this paper, the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method, which is a statistical analysis technique to find the modal characteristics of a structure, is adapted to identify the modal parameters of a tall chimney structure. A wind force time history, which is applied to the structure, is obtained by a wind tunnel test of a scale down model. The POD method is applied on the wind force induced responses of the structure, and the true normal modes of the structure can be obtained. The modal parameters including, natural frequency, mode shape, damping ratio and kinetic energy of the structure can be estimated accurately. With these results, it may be concluded that the POD method can be applied to obtain accurate modal parameters from the wind-induced building responses.

  • This paper presents identification and control of a surface mounting system. The mount head of the system is modeled to analyze its dynamic characteristics, which is critical to the placement performance of the mounter. Based on this model, an identification work is carried out to estimate the modeled parameters by using genetic algorithm (GA), which plays a role of minimizing an error between the actual response and the model response. Having obtained the identified parameters, we design a disturbance observer control to compensate the friction. The disturbance observer can estimate the friction force and the uncertainty of the system. From the experimental results, it is found that the proposed disturbance observer plus PID controller show a better performance than PID controller alone. In order to accomplish a stable contact content control for fast mounting a ...

  • The method based on various mathematical characteristic equations for identifying tensile forces in the cable structure system are used as response data to reflect the properties of the dynamic sensitivity. The vibration tests have been conducted with respect to levels of applied weight for the sagged cable. In this study, a set of natural frequencies are extracted from the measured dynamic data. Next, existing characteristic equation methods based these extracted natural frequencies are applied to identify tensil forces of the sagged cable system. Through several verification procedures, the proposed methods could be applied to a sagged cable system when the initial material data are insufficiency.

  • The Direct Drive Valve used in this study contains a pressure-feedback-loop in itself, then it can eliminate nonlinearity such as the square-root-term in flow rate calculation and the change of bulk modulus of hydraulic oil. In this study, assuming that the dynamic characteristic of the DDV is modelled as a first order lag system, an parameter identification method using the input data and the output data is applied to obtain DDV's mathematical model. Then, a state feedback controller was designed to implement the force control of hydraulic system, and the control performance was evaluated.

  • A momentum type actuator produces force and torque disturbances as well as its designed control torque. These disturbances are ones of the largest disturbance sources inside the spacecraft, which deteriorate the pointing stability of the high precision spacecraft. The measurement and analysis of actuator disturbances are therefore imperative for such a spacecraft, and thus a three dimensional torque measurement table has been developed for that purpose. The data acquired from the measurement table are processed in the frequency domain and displayed in the power spectral density(PSD). Through this process, disturbance model parameters are obtained and used for the attitude stability simulation. The process has been adopted for the disturbance measurement of the reaction wheel, and the validity of measurements and parameter identification procedure is verified.

  • Free running model tests gives us only maneuvering indices not hydrodynamic derivatives. For this reason, system identification method has been applied to the measured data to identify mathematical model describing hydrodynamic force. However It is difficult to obtain complete set of maneuvering derivatives because of strong correlation of sway velocity and yaw rate. Therefore, in this paper, we assumed that sway velocity related coefficients would be obtained by oblique towing test. and then proposed new procedure to estimate yaw related coefficients. To do this, correlation and regression analyses were carried out to establish modified model and estimate maneuvering derivatives. Also D-optimal rudder input scenario was found based on the modified model and confirmed the validity of its sufficient richness as a input scenario.

  • In this work, a frequency domain method is tested numerically and experimentally to improve nonlinear model parameters using the frequency response function at the nonlinear element connected point of structure. This method extends the force-state mapping technique, which fits the nonlinear element forces with time domain response data, into frequency domain manipulations. The force-state mapping method in the time domain has limitations when applying to complex real structures because it needd a time domain lumped parameter model. On the other hand, the frequency domain method is relatively easily applicable to a complex real structure having nonlinear elements since it uses the frequency response function of each substurcture. Since this mehtod is performed in frequency domain, the number of equations required to identify the unknown parameters can be easily increased as many as it needed, just by not only varying excitation amplitude bot also selecting excitation frequency domain method has some advantages over the classical force-state mapping technique in the number of data points needed in curve fit and the sensitivity to response noise.
