  • In this study, surveys on operation status of the 73 tractors with rated power of over 75 kW from six provinces in Korea were performed to obtain basic data required for development and efficient use of the high-power and high-performance tractors. And types of tractors and implements, operation crops, types of operations, annual operation areas, annual operation days, annual operation hours, operation speeds and widths, and problems and improvements in use were investigated. Most (91.7%) of the tractor surveyed were operated for forage and silage crops such as rice straw, whole barley, rye grass, reed canary grass, sudan grass, and the remains were operated for upland crops such as ginseng, sweet potato, potato, chinese cabbage, radish. Main operations of the tractors were cutting, baling, and wrapping for forage crops, plow tillage, rotary tillage, and manure spreading. About half (47.9%) of the tractors were used exclusively for forage crop harvesting such as forage crop cutting, forage baling, and bale wrapping, 24.5% of the tractors were used exclusively for plow or rotary tillage, and 27.4% of the tractors were used for both forage crop harvesting, and plow or rotary tillage. For the tractors with power ranges of 75~83, 89~94, 98~101, 113, 124 kW, average annual operation areas per tractor for plow tillage, rotary tillage, forage crop harvesting (cutting, baling, wrapping), and manure spreading operations were analyzed as 112.6. 144.8, 158.9. 390.0. 215.6 ha, respectively. and total average annual operation area per tractor was 171.3 ha. Average annual operation days per tractor for those operations were analyzed as 24.1, 28.9, 38.3, 55.4, 33.4, respectively, and total average annual operation days per tractor was 33.6. Average annual operation hours per tractor for them were analyzed as 260.0, 321.6, 408.1, 664.8, 413.8, respectively, and total average annual operation hours per tractor for the all tractors was 377.1. Ranges of operation widths of plow tillage, rotary tillage, forage crop cutting, forage baling, bale wrapping, and manure spreading operations were shown as 1.5~2.6, 2.3~3.0, 1.8~3.2, 1.8~2.0, 1.8~2.3, 3.1~6.6 m, respectively. Ranges of operation speed of plow tillage, rotary tillage, forage crop cutting, forage baling, bale wrapping, and manure spreading were shown as 6~9, 4~11, 9~16, 8~15, 8~17, 12~16 km/h, respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of the silage additives on improvement of quality of fresh rice straw silage using round bale at the forage experimental field, grassland and forage crops division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1997 to 1998. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replication. The treatments used in this study were consisted of different additives(control, formic acid, molasses, molasses+urea and inoculant). The rice straw silage with molasses+urea treatment resulted in high crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility were increased with molasses of inoculant treatments compare with the control. The mean dry matter of formic acid treatment material was higher than with control but there was no significant difference in dry matter content among the additives treatments. The pH of molasses treatments significantly increased the proportion of lactic acid(P<0.05) and decreased the proportion of butyric acid. The total organic acid content of all treatments had low around 2%. Ammonia-N of molasses+urea treatment was significantly(P<0.05) higher than that of others, but formic acid or inoculant treatments was lower below 10% per total nitrogen. Over a 7d feeding period, the dry matter intake per cattle on the inoculant treatment was higher that on both the untreated round bale silage of fresh rice straw and rice straw hay. Producing cost per kilogram of round bale silage of fresh rice straw was decreased according to the increasement of harvesting area. It is suggested that application of round bale silage system to fresh rice straw with molasses or inoculant was the best treatment for improving preservation as silage, and that animal intake was enhanced by addition of inoculant to fresh rice straw.

  • In this study, we evaluated the salinity tolerance of five forage rice cultivars (Mogwoo, Mogyang, Miwoo, Jowoo, and Yeongwoo) with respect to germination, seedling growth, productivity, and feed values in a reclaimed paddy field in Muan, Korea. We found that the cultivars Mogwoo, Miwoo, Jowoo, and Yeongwoo showed normal germination and seedling growth, even at saline concentrations of between 0.1% and 0.5%, whereas in contrast, there were significant reductions in the germination and seedling growth of Mokyang with an increase in salt concentration. Among the five cultivars assessed, the seedling growth of Mogwoo and Yeongwoo was relatively higher at different salt concentrations in hydroponic and sand cultivation. Furthermore, cultivation of the five cultivars in the reclaimed paddy field with an initial salt concentration of 0.3% revealed that Yeongwoo was relatively superior in terms of yield and feed value. In conclusion, the germination and early growth of Yeongwoo were relatively good at high salt concentrations, and the yield and forage value of this cultivar in a reclaimed paddy field were also relatively superior to those of the other assessed varieties.

  • This study was carried out to select the promising forage crops for forage production in paddy field of NLRI, RDA, Suwon from 1999 to 2001. The species of forage crop used in this experiment were barley(3 varieties), wheat(2), rye(3) and Italian ryegrass(IRG, 3). Stages of heading, milk and yellow ripe of barley were 1 May, middle May and late May, respectively. In milk to yellow ripe stage, dry matter(DM) and total digestible nutrient(TDN) yield of barley were $7.30{\sim}9.58$ MT and $4.75{\sim}6.24$ MT per ha, and Albori was the most promising variety among the barley. The growth of wheat was a little late compared to that of barley. but it seemed to be crop having higher forage yield and nutritive value. In milk to yellow stage, DM and TDN yield of wheat were $8.17{\sim}10.82$ MT and $5.33{\sim}7.31$ MT per ha. Heading stage of rye was 27 to 29 April, and it seemed to be suitable for harvest at heading to flowering stage because of heavy lodging after flowering. In flowering stage, DM and TDN yield of rye were 10.18 and 6.03 MT per ha. Heading stage of early maturing IRG was 7 May and it seemed to be good for harvest at flowering stage of middle May in cropping system. In flowering stage, DM and TDN yield of early type IRG were 4.48 and 2.96 MT per ha. The results demonstrated that the promising forage crops for forage production in paddy. field were rye and barley(Albori) in Middle region, and rye harvesting at early May was recommended when considered middle May of rice transplanting period, and rye and barley considered late May of rice planting period. Also early maturing and high yielding IRG variety was strongly needed.

  • This study was carried out to select the promising forage crops for forage production in paddy field of HARI, RDA, Iksan from 1999 to 2001. The species of forage crop used in this experiment were barley(5 varieties), wheat(2), rye(3) and Italian ryegrass(IRG, 3). Stage of heading, milk and yellow ripe of barley were 26 $April{\sim}l$ May, middle May and late May, respectively. In milk to yellow ripe stage, dry matter(DM) yield of barley was $6.64{\sim}10.47$ MT per ha, and averaged ADF and NDF contents were $31.6\%\;and\;62.2\%$ respectively. Albori was the most promising variety among the barley). The growth of wheat was a little late compared to that of barley, but it seemed to be crop having higher forage yield md nutritive value. In milk to yellow stage, DM yield of wheat was $7.51{\sim}11.96$ MT per ha, and nutritive value of wheat was high(ADF $30.6\%$ and NDF $60.1\%$). Heading stage of rye was $25{\sim}27$ April, and it seemed to be suitable to harvest at heading to flowering stage because of heavy lodging after flowering. In flowering stage, DM yield of rye was 17.26 MT per ha, and nutritive value of rye was the lowest among 4 species(ADF $38.6\%$ and NDF $65.5\%$). Heading stage of early maturing IRG was 30 April and it seemed to be suitable for harvest at flowering stage of middle May in cropping system. In flowering stage, DM yield of early type IRG was 10.77 MT per ha, and averaged ADF and NDF contents were $31.6\%\;and\;59.2\%$, respectively. The results demonstrated that the promising forage crops for forage production in paddy field were rye, barley, early maturing IRG and wheat in Honam region. In Southern region, rye harvesting at early May was recommended when considered middle May of rice transplanting period, and barley(Albori) and early maturing IRG harvesting at middle May were recommended when considered late May of rice planting period. And also, wheat with high nutritive value and possibility for harvesting at late May were recommended in case of transplanting period at early June.

  • We investigated the nutritive value and ruminal in situ dry matter degradability of whole crop rice silage prepared using Chucheongbyeo (WCRS) as a roughage source for ruminants. The crude protein (7.54%), acid detergent fiber (29.63%), neutral detergent fiber (62.98%), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) (57.88%) found higher in WCRS than those of rice straw. Manganese content in the WCRS was the highest, followed by carbon, iron, zinc, and copper, but magnesium content was the lowest. Glutamic acid content in WCRS was the highest, followed by leucine, asparagine, alanine, valine, arginine, and methionine content was the lowest. We examined ruminal in situ digestibility from total whole crop rice (TWCR), rice husks containing rice (RHR), whole crop rice except RHR (WER), and husked grain (HG) for 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Ruminal in situ digestibility in the HG was the highest, followed by RHR, TWCR, and WER. Therefore, we suggest that ruminal in situ degradability was influenced by parts of whole crop rice, and the content of manganese and glutamic acid were the highest in WCRS.

  • In 1985 and 1986, silage productivity of 8 Korean improved and 7 US introduced corn hybrids and their resistance to rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) were tested in the southern part of Korea where RBSDV is prevalent. The results obtained are summarized as followes: 1. Percentage of RBSDV diseased plantes differed depending on the year and hybrid. Suweon 19, Kwangok, Hoengseungok, Jecheonok, Pioneer 3424, Pioneer 3H001, NC6 13 1 were most susceptible, Pioneer 3 160 and Pioneer 3358 were moderately susceptible, and Nampyungok, Suweon 90, Pioneer XCF38, PB 2, and Jinjuok were least suceptible. No hybrid was completely resistant to RBSDV. 2. There were negative correlations between percentage of RBSDV diseased plants and culm length, percentage of ear bearing plants, ear yield, silage yield, or digestible dry matter, but percentage of RBSDV diseased plants was not correlated with stover yield. 3. Silage yield of Jinjuok, Pioneer 3160, Pioneer 3358, and Pioneer XCF38 were higher than that of other hybrids in both years. However, digestible dry matter of Nampyungok, Suweon 89, and Suweon 90 were higher than that of other hybrids due to a higher proportion of ear in 1986 when RBSDV infection was severer.
