  • The species of forage crops used in this study were Italian ryegrass (cv. Kowenery), sorghum (cv. SX17), proso millet (cv. domestic) and Japanese millet (cv. Jeju). The plant height of the summer crops was the highest at the dough stage. The dry matter yield of Italian ryegrass was 902.7 kg per 10 a. The dry matter yield of the winter crop and sorghum was 11,985 kg when harvested at the dough stage rather than at the first and second harvests. The proso and Japanese millet also had higher yields for dry matter during the dough stage rather than during heading and regeneration. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) content of Sorghum was lower than that of the first and second harvest; however, the proso and Japanese millet had a higher ADF content at the dough stage. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content was higher at the dough stage than at the first and second harvest, and the crude protein content was also lower at the dough stage than at the first and second harvest. The crude protein production for the dry matter yield was about 84 kg in Sorghum when harvested at the dough stage. Proso millet showed no difference for the crude protein production at the heading and dough stage while the Japanese millet had a higher crude protein production. There were no differences in the total digestible nutrients (TDN) content for the three crops according to the harvesting time. Therefore, if Sorghum and Proso and Japanese millet are to be combined with Italian ryegrass, it is better to harvest them at the dough stage.

  • This experiment 'was conducted to investigate the grazing cattle's palatability by the method of grazing time on the pasture dominated orchardgrass and on the pasture dominated perennial ryegrass from June to October, 1987. The experiment was carried out on the experimental field at Livestock Ex- Experiment Station. The results are summarized as follows: 1. In summer, the grazing time on the pasture dominated orchardgrass increased in 49.7 min, 57.4 min, 102 min, 118.7 min, respectively as sward height decreased in 50 cm, 45 cm, 35 cm, 23 cm, respectively and their correlation coefficiet was -0.9722*(P <0.05). 2. In autumn, the grazing time on the pasture dominated perennial ryegrass decreased in 182 min, 98.5 min, 49.4 min, 31.9 min, respectively as sward height decreased in 43 cm, 34 cm, 25 cm, 18 cm, respectively and their correlation coefficient was 0.9684*. (P <0.05). 3. Grazing time increased as sward height increased on the pasture dominated perennial ryegrass because the composition rate of orchardgrass and red clover which were palatability on the plot of the high sward height.was many. It was suggested that the factor that could be first related to palatability on mixture pasture was the factor of species than the factor of sward height. 4. When the eating rate on the plot of the low sward height was over 55% as the grazing day went by, it gradually decreased because the eating rate on it was high but the fresh yield was low. After all it seemed that it affected palatability because forage availability on the plot of the low sward height was degenerating.

  • This study was carried out to obtain good livestock production in comparison with 3 different pasture mixture (Control : TI = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Fawn tall fescue + Regal white clover, T2 = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Roa tall fescue + Regal white clover, T3 = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Roa tall fescue + Tahora white clover) by grazing experiment used 45 dairy calves (about lOOkg liveweight) during the period from April to October, 1994 at the Isidole farm, Cheju. Daily liveweight gains of calves grazed during the experiment period were 331${\pm}$29, 352${\pm}$4, 356${\pm}$18g in treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively, but did not get statistically significant difference. On compared the results with the period investigated, the period which was highest in daily liveweight gain was early grazing season b m May to June while the period shown to be lowest in daily liveweight gain was between late July and late August. Hehage intake rate did not get significant difference among treatments with results shown as 67${\pm}$1.2, 62${\pm}$5.1, 60${\pm}$9.6% in treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively. And efficiency of conversation into animal product was high in treatment 2. It is considered that good results were not obtained in this study because tall fescue and white clover, important species in this trial did not cover the pasture well with slow establishment in 1st year after seeding.

  • Pollution of agricultural soil by alkaline salts, such as Na2CO3, is a critical and long-lasting problem in cultivable land. The aim of the study was to examine the putative role of citric acid (CA) in alleviating Na2CO3-stress in alfalfa. In this study, Na2CO3 significantly induced leaf chlorosis, inhibited plant growth and photosynthesis related parameters, increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and reduced major antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAD, APX) in alfalfa. However, the presence of CA these negative effects of Na2CO3-stress largely recovered. Interestingly, expression of antioxidant and ion transporter genes (Fe-SOD, CAT, APX, DHAR and NHX1) involved in Reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis and oxidative stress tolerance in alfalfa. These findings suggest that CA-mediated Na2CO3 stress alleviation is an ecofriendly approach that would be useful to local farmer for alfalfa and other forage crop cultivation in alkaline soils.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of waterlogging stress on the physiological response and growth characteristics of the five Italian ryegrass varieties. For all varieties, the germination rate of seed decreased by 10-15% as the waterlogging period increased, but the waterlogging stress treatment after the early seedling stage increased the growth of shoot and root length. Photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm) according to waterlogging stress treatment decreased in all vareity, and Florida 80 showed the least decrease with 1.5%. Waterlogging stress treatment was found to reduce the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (malondialdehyde, MDA) and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. These results suggest that other mechanisms may be involved in the defense mechanism of Italian ryegrass against waterlogging stress, such as promoting root growth to escape from waterlogging stress, in addition to the antioxidant enzyme system.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of cutting frequency and nitrogen fertilization in the mixed pasture on root production and its depth distribution. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Root distribution studied on botanical composition was not significantly different by the upper 20cm level in all treatments. 2. Root yields were all high irrespectively of dominant species. However, Arrhenatherum elatius dominant pasture showed the lowest. Alopecurus pratensis dominant pasture showed the highest in root yield. 3. With the root yield, there was no significant difference in cutting frequency, but the moderate nitrogen level(N-2) showed the highest root yield among three N levels. 4. The depth distribution of root was 1m depth in all treatments.

  • Rhizotron technique was used to determine the zone of active root growth in contrasting field situations. The distribution of roots with depth showed most root in the 15∼30 cm layer with fewer in the 0∼15 cm and below 30 cm layer at Lincoln Farm, while root density increased with depth at Winchmore. At Mt Johm (Lake Tekapo) roots were more distributed near soil surface. Root density was increased with fertilizer and irrigation at Mt John. Root number showed the same trends as root length at all lesions. Tube method was good for comparative purposes, and for long-term root growth studies at the same place.

  • Even though grass species are one of major importance in livestock industry, the response of intergeneric hybridization of Lolium and Festuca and interspecific hybridization of Lolium m.X Lolium p. to Korean climatic condition has not been adequately documented. This reasearch was conducted to examine the growth characteristics and dry matter yield of Festulolium, cv. Felopa and C-Stamm N 66 and hybrid ryegrass, cv. Maja and Tetilelite. 1. The early growth of Italian ryegrass was better than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. The plant length and height of Italian ryegrass were longer/taller than those of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium, but the number of tillers of Italian ryegrass was less than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. 2. Festuloliu and hybrid ryegrass were more tolerant than Italian ryegrass to winter killing, 70-80% of tillers was survived. 3. After wintering, early spring growth of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were better than that of Italian ryegrass. Dry matter yield of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were more than that of Italian ryegrass. 4. Spikes of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium (C-Stamm N66) were more than those of Italian ryegrass. Seed yield per $m^2$ of hybrid ryegrass and Italian ryegrass were almost same, but that of Festuloliu was lower.

  • The cutting schedule for the maximum yield of DM and quality was applied to alfalfa swards. Harvesting at the cutting time for the maximum total yield to (Chang 1971) was selected as the criterion which provided the highest DM yield in accordance with high consistent levels of CP and IVD as well as persistance of the species in the pure stands. On the same theoretical basis, ceiling LAI and 25% bloom stages proved most satisfactory for harvesting pure stands of alfalfa.

  • Environmental stresses caused by climate change, such as high temperature, drought and salinity severely impact plant growth and productivity. Among these factors, high temperature stress will become more severe during summer. In this study, we examined physiological and molecular responses of maize plants to high temperature stress during summer. Highest level of $H_2O_2$ was observed in maize leaves collected July 26 compared with June 25 and July 12. Results indicated that high temperature stress triggers production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in maize leaves. In addition, photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) sharply decreased in leaves with increasing air temperatures during the day in the field. RT-PCR analysis of maize plants exposed to high temperatures of during the day in field revealed increased accumulation of mitochondrial and chloroplastic small heat shock protein (HSP) transcripts. Results demonstrate that Fv/Fm values and organelle-localized small HSP gene could be used as physiological and molecular indicators of plants impacted by environmental stresses.
