  • This field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilizer application time in early spring on growth, dry matter (DM) yield, crude protein (CP) content, crude protein yield (CPY), N recovery, acid detergent fibej (ADF) content and DM digestibility (DMD) of grasses for hay. Application times of fertilizer were March 10, 20, 30, April 9. 19, and control (non-fertilized) plot was involved. The fust harvesting data for hay was May 9 (early heading stage) and the regrowth yields were investigated for soiling, 1989. In all fertilized plots, the growth, DM yield, CP, CPY and N recovery of grasses were significantly increased compared with control, and the best grass growth, DM yield, CP, CPY, N recovery and DMD were observed on March 20 and 30 among all fertilized plots. On March 20 and 30 in this experiment, the accumulated temperature was 200 and 280^{\circ}C.$, and the subsoil temperature at 10 cm depth was 8 and 10^{\circ}C.$. Considering the average meteorological condition in Suwon area, the optimum application time of early spring for hay may be recommended from April 10 to 15. i\ulcornerfW3U% (L. westock Experiment Station, RDA. • Kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb.) is a rhizomatous perennial legume that has potential as a forage crop in the North-Central USA because of its excellent persistence under environmental extremes. Little information is available about defoliation effects on productivity of mixtures of kura clover with grasses typically grown in this region. Two field trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of defoliation management on yield and species composition of binary mixtures of 'Rhizo' kura clover with 'Comet' orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), 'Badger' smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), 'Park' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and solo-seeded kura clover near Arlington, WI. Three harvest schedules (three, four, or five times annually) and two cutting heights (4 or 10 cm) were imposed. Infrequent defoliation and lower cutting height produced significantly greater total forage yield, 6.6, 5.8, and 5.2 Mg/ha in 3-, 4-, and 5-harvest systems, respectively; and 6.5 and 5.2 Mg/ha for the 4- and 10-cm cutting height, respectively. Averaged over 3 yr and two environments, mixtures had higher forage productions than solo kura clover (6.3, 5.7, and 6.0 Mg/ha for the Kentucky bluegrass, orchardgrass, and smooth bromegrass mixtures, respectively; compared to 5.2 Mg/ha for solo kura clover). The proportion of kura clover in mixtures increased from yr 1 to yr 2 and was constant from yr 2 to yr 3 (34, 58, and 57%, respectively). We conclude that kura clover has excellent potential as a long-term component of grass-legume mixtures regardless of the cutting height, harvest frequency or grass species, even though the proportion of kura clover in harvested forage was significantly greater with less frequent harvest and shorter cutting height of all mixtures.

  • This experiment was canied out to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization level (0, 70, 140, 280 and 420 k a a ) on the grass growth, dry matter (DM) production, numtive value, and botanical composition in reed canarygrass (Phalaris ancndinacea L.) pasture. \ulcornerhe cultivar used in this study was Palaton, and the grass was harvested at soiling-hay stage (3 times per year) in 1992 and 1993. As the N level was increased, the plant height, DM produdion, and crude protein (CP) content were significantly increased (P<0.05). When the N was applied at the levels of 0, 70, 140, 280, 420 kg, DM yields were 4,540, 5,316, 6,060, 7,923 and 9,960 kgha, and CP contents were 17.6, 17.4, 17.4, 18.4 and 19.8%, respectively. However, as the N level was increased, DM percentage, total digestible nutrients, and relative feed value were decreased, while the contents of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, and bareland were continuously increased, particularly in the plot of N 420 kg fdzation. From the above results, it is suggested that reed canarygrass was one of the sensitive pasture grasses to N fertilizer, and the proper amount of N application was 280 kg/ha/yr for desirable production, nutritive value, and botanical composition in r e d conarygrass pasmre.

  • Manure recycle is an emerging issue in agriculture in Korea these days. Farmers are keeping eye on legume mixture with grasses for nitrogen fixation and transfer to companion crops by legumes. We had a trial to investigate the effect of different legume mixtures on nitrogen fixation and transfer in spring soil. The treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Three different mixtures were used(rye+hairy vetch, Italian ryegrass+crimson clover, oat+pea) and sowed in pots with paddy soil from western part of Korea(Seo Chon County). Pots with rye+vetch were transplanted from field of RDA(rural development administration) in Suwon on 2 February 2007 and other mixture treatments were sowed on early March with different sowing rate(7:3=Italian:crimson, 6:4=oat:pea). $(^{15}NH_4)_2SO_4$ solution at. $99.8\;atom%^{15}N$ was applied to the each pot at the rate of $2kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$. Application was done on 6 April at rye+vetch pots and remainder were applied on April 16. Forage were harvested from each pot at ground level in heading stage and separated into legume and grass. Total N content and $^{15}N$ value were determined using a continuous flow stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry. DM yield of rye+vetch, Italian+crimson and oat+pea were 6,607, 3,213 and 4,312 kg/ha, respectively. Proportion of N from fixation was 0.73(rye+vetch), 0.42(Italian+crimson) and 0.93(oat+pea). The percentages of N transfer from legume to grass were from 61% to 24% in different method by treatment and -35% to 21% in isotope dilution method.

  • To investigate the effects of nitrogen(N) fertilization levels on the dry matter(DM) yield, nutrition yield, and N efficiency of forages in mixed sward of alfalfa-grasses, a field experiment arranged by randomized complete block design with five treatments(0, 70, 140, 210 and 280kg N/ha) was conducted at Livestock Experiment Station in Suwon, September, 1990 to February, 1993. During two years, average DM yields of forage increased as N fertilization level was increased, but no significant difference was found between DM 10,266kg of N 210kgha and DM 10,845kg of N 280kgha. Crude protein and energy productivity of forages increased as N fertilization level was increased, and the increasing degree was highest between N 140kg and 210kg/ha fertilization. With increasing N fertilization, mineral contents tended to decrease in P and K/Ca+ Mg equivalent ratios, to increase in Mg, but not to be regular in the other elements. Efficiency of N was highest at N 210kg/ha fertilization, which produced DM 21.6kg, net energy lactation 129.3 MJ, starch equivalent 12.3kStE and total digestible nutrients 14.5kg per Ikg N.

  • This experiment was conducted to provide comparative data on the newly imported thirteen sorghum-sudangrass hybrids(Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench), TE Goldmaker sorghum hybrid (S. Bicolor (L.) Moench), NC+ 88SS sudangrass hybrid (S, bicolor (L.) Moench), Supermill pearlmillet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) and teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana Schrad,) in comparison with the check variety Pioneer 988 sorghum-sudangrass hybrid for dry matter yield, protein content, in vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD), and other desirable agronomic characteristics, SX-17 and NC+855 gave significantly higher dry matter yield than the check variety. There was no significant difference in total dry matter yield of the remaining 14 varieties with the exception of teosinte and TE Goldmaker which had the lowest yield. The most varieties were moderately resistant to leaf diseases although differences exist among varieties. No diseases were found in pearlmillet and teosinte, but NC+ 88SS was very susceptible to leaf blight. The mean percent crude protein of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids was lower than that of pearlmillet and sorghum hybrid, but was higher than that of sudangrass hybrid, The IVDMD of G-83F, TE Goldmaker, teosinte and HW 5111 was higher than that of the check variety. There was no consistent relationship between the percent of crude protein and IVDMD of the summer annual grasses.

  • To study management practices suitable for the least production loss of temperate pasture under summer stress, two different cutting dates (late June and mid July) under summer stress and five different nitrogen treatment application levels (0, 100. 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha) were tried during the trial period between Oct. of 1986 and Oct. of 1989. The late June cutting showed a statistically significant increase of dry matter yield of pasture in comparison with the mid-July cutting(P<0.05). Nitrogen application also gave significant increase in dry matter yield. Botanical composition at the 4th cuttings in 1988 and 1989 was dominated by weeds to the level of 50%, Application ofnitrogen at 200 kgs per ha was found to be the best with production of grasses at 70%, legumes at 10 % and weeds at 20% in botanical composition comparison of pastures at the 4th cutting time the last year, showing a great decrease of weeds. K contents of pasture in June cuttings showed to be more than them in July cutting, and N and Na contents increased with increases of the nitrogen application level. It was concluded that treatment with June cutting and nitrogen application of 200 kg per ha was a way to keep temperate pasture from summer stress in the Cheju area.

  • Adequate regrowth control of weeds and shrubs has been one of the important problem for pasture establishment by overseeding on reclaimed forest hilly land. This experiment was carried out on sloping shrub land near Anseong, Gyeonggido to evaluate the effects of herbicide application on growth control of native weeds, shrubs and trees. We evaluated 63 different weeds and wood species in the trials, which are grown common in korean forest. Buthidazol and 4 other herbicides (sodium chlorate, glyphosate, U-46 and gramoxone) were sprayed each at two application rates during the period of the most intensive growth, on 20 July 45 days before overseeding of pasture species. Glyphosate and sodium chlorate gave excellant control of growth of all species. However. Uncus effusus, Carex heterostachya, Polygonatum humile, Rubus corchorifolius, Lonicera coeralea and Rhododendron mucronulatum were classified as a tolerant weed and wood species to herbicides. Herbicide buthidazol showed also successive control of regrowth of weeds and wood species. But buthidazol was evaluated as a none available herbicide for use in pasture establishment. because o! their long persist of toxic herbicide residue in soils after treatments. Herbicide U-46 and gramoxone had almost no effect on regrowth of shrubs and tree species

  • This experiment was canied out to select the optimum utilization method by various pasture types at National Livestock Research Institute, Suwon in 1992 and 1993. Tne main plot was two pasture types. wfiich were mainly top-grass(orchardgrass dominated pasture) and mainly bottom-grass(perennial ryegrass dominated pasture), and the subplot was three pasture utilization methods (grazing, grazing after the 1st cutting, and alternate utilization of cutting and grazing). Average dry matter yields of pasture were not affected by pasture types, but there was significant difference(p <0.05) by pasture utilization methods. Daily DM production of pasture was increased with alternate utilization of cutting and grazing at two pasture types. Also, pasture availability is increased by mainly top grasses and alternate utilization of cutting and grazing. Soil phsical chracteristics are improved by alternate utilization of cutting and grazing. According to the results obtained from this experiment, it is suggested that alternate utilization of cutting and grazing is effective for dry matter yield, pasture availability and soil phsical characteristics regardless of pasture types in Korea.
