  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of foot reflexo-massage on physical, psychological, and physiological parameters in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Method: This study was employed non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest time series experimental design. The subjects of this study were 47 elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the knee from two different nursing homes in Deajeon. The patients were divided into two groups; 26 patients in experimental group, the rest in control group. Each patient in experimental group received the 30-minute foot reflexo-massage, 3 times per week for 4 weeks. The dependent variables of each patient were measured before treatment, after 2 weeks and after 4 weeks during the treatment session. The collected data was analyzed using the Social Package Social Science(version 10.0) software program. Result: There were significant differences in the flexion angle of both knees; the flexion and extension muscle strength of both knees; systolic blood pressure; POMS; plantaris skin temperature and blood velocity of dorsalis pedis artery between the two groups over different the three measurement times. Conclusion: The results suggest that foot reflexo-massage could be an effective intervention to improve physical, psychological and physiological parameters for patients with knee osteoarthritis.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to analyze the characteristics and effect sizes of intervention studies on foot-reflexo-massage applied to cancer patients. Methods: For meta-analysis, a total of 159 studies were retrieved from search engines such as RISS, nanet, KISS, richis and KoreaMed. 16 studies published from 1990 to 2010 were selected based on the inclusion criteria. The data were analyzed with the RevMan 5.0 program of Cochrane library. Results: 1) The mean score of 1 implement time on foot-reflexo-massage was 25.62 minutes, the average number of days was 4.12 days, and the total number of average intervention frequency was 4.25 times. 2) Intervention studies on foot-reflexo-massage included 9 studies on anxiety (56.3%), 7 for pain (43.8%), 5 for BP/pulse (31.3%), 5 for fatigue (31.3%), 3 for nausea/vomiting (18.8%), 3 for sleep satisfaction (18.8%), and 2 for depression (12.5%). 3) The effect sizes of the intervention studies that showed higher effect size were in order, anxiety (d=-1.76), fatigue (d=-1.43), depression (d=-1.03), nausea and vomiting (d=-0.83), pain (d=-0.77), pulse rate (d=-0.61), blood pressure (d=-0.55), and sleep satisfaction (d=0.43). Conclusion: This study suggests that foot-reflexo-massage can increase sleep satisfaction, whereas decreasing blood pressure, pulse rate, anxiety, fatigue, depression, nausea, vomiting and pain.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of foot care education program using foot-reflexo-massage in diabetic patients. Method: A convenience sample of non-equivalent control group time series design was used. It provided foot care education to diabetic patients through small book for both group. For the experimental group, foot-reflexo-massage was taught by a researcher and research assistants. Analysis was done by Repeated Measured ANOVA. Result: There was significant increase in foot care knowledge, self care behavior, between the experimental group and the control group over three different times. There was significant in skin temperature and pulse of foot over three different times and interaction by groups or over time, but there was no significant difference between groups. There was no significant difference in blood flow volume and capillary filling time over three different times, between groups, but there was interaction by groups or over time. But there was significant difference in discrimination in change of dosalis pedis artery blood flow. Conclusion: Findings indicate that this study may contribute to develop nursing intervention for foot care of diabetic patients.

  • Purpose: This study was to analyze the characteristics and effect size of intervention studies applied to cancer-related fatigue in Korea. Methods: For meta-analysis, a total of 963 studies were retrieved from search engines. And 19 studies with a total of 721 participants published from 1990 to 2010 were selected upon their satisfaction with the inclusion criteria. Two authors independently extracted data from the selected studies and assessed the methodological quality. The data was analyzed by the RevMan 5.0 program of Cochrane library. Results: Intervention studies included 4 studies on foot-reflexo-massage (21.1%), comprehensive program (21.1%), and exercise (21.1%), respectively, 3 for hand-reflexo-massage (15.8%), and 4 for others. The effect size of the intervention studies shown higher effect size in order of exercise (d=-1.80), and foot & hand-reflexo-massage (d=-0.55). Conclusion: This study suggest that exercise can reduce the intensity of cancer-related fatigue, even though the number of intervention studies and randomized controlled trials were very few. There is limited evidence that reflexo-massage is effective in reducing cancer-related fatigue.

  • This study was carried out to introduce the Foot reflexo-massage (FRM) as a method of nursing practice based on the health promotion of occupational health. Literature reviews were done to achieve study aims from October in 1999 to August in 2000. The results were as follow ; 1. Theory of the FRM was mainly developed from the reflexology based on function and role of foot. 2. The FRM is focused on the appropriate reflexology of foot with pressures of light-moderate-light or light-strong-light scaled strength for 15 minutes at each feet. The massage should begin with the foot area where it is assumed as a was, of internal to external and upper to lower side. It also should start from left to light side of the feet. 3. The FRM is an alternative therapy increasingly demanded as an self applying method between eastern and western due to the benefit of natural healing power with no side effects. 4. The FRM can be an nursing intervention for health promotion of employees through supportive and educative nursing system in occupational health service. As a conclusion of the study, it suggested that the FRM can be recommended as a nursing intervention to promote health of employees and to prevent disease related to work.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the change in foot care knowledge, self care behavior, and physiologic indexes after foot reflexomassage education program, and the related factors. Method: Data were collected from 20 patients who were visited out patients clinic. The change and difference were analyzed with non-parametric statistics. Result: There were significant differences in foot care knowledge(P=.001), self care behavior(P=.000), dosalis pedis blood flow volume (P=.011), skin temperature of foot(P=.001), dorsalis pedis pulse(P=.000), capillary filling time of foot (P=.000) between pre and post. The level of changes of foot care knowledge was significant differences according to admission experience (P=.049), and negative related to systolic blood pressure(P=.028). The level of changes of self care behavior was related to age(P=.049), that of dosalis pedis blood flow was significant difference according to smoking(P=.042), that of skin temperatureof foot(P=.002) and dosalis pedis pulse(P=.038) were significant difference according to weight. The level of changes of capillary filling time of foot was related to diagnosis period(P=.014). Conclusion: Foot-Reflexo-Massage education program is an effective nursing intervention to promote foot care in diabetic patients. And the related factors can be recommended for the management of diabetic patients.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to analyze the trend of foot reflexology research in nursing in Korea. Method: Of studies published in nursing literature between January 1990 and August 2007. The 74 articles were analyzed according to the published year and journal, type of research and study design, subject, and the outcome variables of interventions. Result: Prevailing research designs were experimental research (nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design). Prevailing characteristics of subjects were patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hemodialysis, cancer and others disease (osteoarthritis, cerebral vascular accident, pneumoconiosis). The most frequently performed intervention was Foot-Reflexo-Massage (FRM). The most frequently used outcome variables were fatigue and sleep. The effect of foot reflexology was inconclusive. Conclusion: The finding suggests that a robust research design in foot reflexology research is needed to accumulate a strong scientific evidence and to adopt nursing intervention from the foot reflexology modalities. Meta analysis of foot reflexology research should be done to analyze and integrate the results of various studies.
