This study was designed to figure out the changes in elderly women's foot size and shape by aging, to propose size specification for elderly women's shoes, and to produce regression equations using representative measurements items to estimate other measurements usually hard to get. Subjects were 118 women of 30-59 years and the 227 elderly women over 60 years. Martin's anthropometry was done on the right foot of each subject for 25 items. And 11 indirect measurement items were measured on both foot printing sole outline and picture in profile taken by digital camera. For statistical analysis on the anthropometric measurements by SPSS program, analysis of variance, post-hoc test(SNK-test), crosstabulation, multiple correlation analysis, regression analysis were performed. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, it was found that the foot figures of elderly women over 60 years were smaller in girth and width than those of below 60 years. In addition, it was revealed that a big toe and a little toe of elderly women showed a tendency concentrating to the central axis of feet. The foot index of elderly was smaller in width and girth. Secondly, foot size distribution table of elderly group showed wider size ranges and covered smaller sizes than the below the age of 60, meaning wide variation in foot size of elderly women. Thirdly, the multiple correlation analysis showed high correlation of foot length/girth to other measurements, suggesting these two items could be used as representative items for elderly women's shoe size specification as other age groups. Regression equations were produced using foot length/girth to estimate other measurements, suggesting such items could be estimated effectively and utilized in on/off-line shoe manufacturing shop as heel to big toe length, heel to little toe length, exterior malleouls width, instep girth, ankle girth, etc. These results imply prudent features of elderly women's foot as diversity of foot shape and wide size specification range should be applied for ergonomic shoe design for them.
Objectives : We investigate the characteristics of foot reflex zone acupoint of facial paralysis patients. Methods : In order to make a comparison between facial nerve paralysis patient group and non-facial paralysis group, we measured foot reflex zone acupoint detection in both group of 18 patients who were diagnosticated to facial nerve paralysis and 18 persons who were not. Results : 1. In comparing the means of the foot reflex zone, the measurements of facial nerve paralysis group is different significantly from non-facial paralysis group(p<0.05). 2. The measurement of detection of foot reflex zone acupoints, such as hypophysis(垂體), nose(鼻), cerebrum(大腦), neck(頸項), Trapezius muscle(僧帽筋), eye(眼) and ear(耳) of the facial nerve paralysis group is different significantly in comparison with non-facial paralysis group(p<0.05). But the measurement of detection of foot reflex zone acupoints, such as trigeminal nerve(三叉神經), cerebellum (小腦), kidney(腎), ureter(輸尿管) and urinary bladder(膀胱) of the facial nerve paralysis group is not defferent significantly in comparison with non-facial paralysis group(p>0.05). Conclusions : The results suggest that foot reflex zone can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of facial nerve paralysis.
In order to study the foot deformity hallux valgus, the rate of which is currently increasing, 235 patients who were diagnosed with hallux valgus and treated in an orthopedic hospital in Seoul had their feet calibrated before and after surgery using 3d radio-scans. Data from 209 cases was analyzed and scored numerically. We scored 10 items for length, 4 for width, 3 for angle, and 2 for height, for a total of 20 items. Each individual's feet showed great variation in most of the items and significant differences after surgery, especially in regards to length and height, which increased after surgery. Angle, width, and length of the distal parts of the toes decreased after surgery. Based on the results of our analysis, we conclude that surgery brings about significant changes in structure and measurement of feet. This research confirmed that there is significant variation in foot form and individual differences based on lesion size and location and, thus, it is difficult for hallux valgus patients to find ready-made shoes that fit them properly. Foot changes before and after operation for hallux valgus were analyzed and the results quantified; our results should be considered during product design by shoe companies whose target is adult women.
The characteristics of Korean women's foot shape were extracted by analyzing foot measurements. 14 measurements were measured from foot outline and 12 conventional measurements were taken on the right foot of 386 Korean women from 18 to 86 years. The results indicate that women's foot shape is changed with aging. The young subjects' feet were longer than the foot length of older subjects. The metamorphosis angle of the women over age 45 was greater than the measurement of women under age 45. The typical Korean women's foot shapes characterized by cluster analysis were (1) small foot with little deformity on great toe, (2) wide foot with big deformity on great toe, and (3) thick and narrow foot with moderate deformity on great toe. These results indicate that the foot height and the degree of deformity on great toe are needed to be considered in developing the shoe last for Korean women. The specialized shoe last needs to be developed for elderly.
This study was performed to provide the analysis on their size and the structural factors required in the process of design and manufacture of school girls' shoes. 371 elementary school girls in Kyungin and Youngnam area were participated in the size measurement. 25 foot items and 6 main body items were measured directly or indirectly using a digital photography. The results of the study are as follows: first, by most of measured items, the range of their foot size was very wide from the size of toddlers to adults'. That shows that the change of school girls' foot size occurred with their growth is pretty big. Second, from the structural factor analysis on 25 foot items, five factors were extracted such as 'the size of the foot', 'the volume of the foot,' 'the height and inclination of the foot,' 'the shape of the foot,' and 'the inside and outside inclination of the foot'. Third, from the cluster analysis, three clusters were classified: Cluster 1 was the group of 10 to 11 year old girls who had big-sized feet. The elementary school girls in the fourth to sixth grade belonged to this group. Cluster 2 consisted of girls who had small-sized and big-volumed feet. Cluster 3 had medium-sized and slim-shaped feet. Most of 6 to 7 year old elementary school girls belonged to this group. The above-mentioned results imply that many continual researches are required on children's shoe production reflecting the change of elementary school girls' feet size owing to their growth. The quantitative data on elementary school girls' feet size in this study could be used as basic information for the development of children's shoe design and its production.
D. K. LEE, J. S. LEE, B. J. LEE, H. S. LEE, Y. J. KIM, S. B. PARK, J. P. JOO. Plantar foot pressure analysis during golf swing motion using plantar foot pressure measurement system. Korean Journal of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 15, No. 1, pp. 75-89, 2005. In this study, weight carrying pattern analysis and comparison method of four foot region were suggested. We used three types of club(driver, iron7, pitching wedge). This analysis method can compare between top class golfer and beginner. And the comparison data can be used to correct the swing pose of trainee. If motion analysis system, which can measure the swing speed and instantaneous acceleration at the point of hitting a ball, is combined with this plantar foot force analysis method, new design development of golf shoes to increase comfort and ball flight distance will be available. 1. Address acting, forces concentrated in rare foot regions and lateral foot of right foot. Back swing top acting, relatively high force occurred in medial forefoot region of left foot and forefoot region of right foot. Impact acting, high force value observed in the lateral rarefoot region of left foot and medial forefoot region of right foot. Finish acting, force concentration observed on the lateral region and rarefoot region of left foot. 2. Forces were increased in address of right foot with clubs length increased. All clubs, back swing top acting, high force value observed in the lateral forefoot region of right foot. All clubs, in impact, high force value observed in the lateral rarefoot region of left foot and medial forefoot region of right foot. Finish acting, force concentration observed on the rarefoot region in driver and lateral foot region in iron on left foot. 3. Right foot forces distribution were increased in address, back swing top and left foot force distribution were increased in impact, finnish
Background: Flexible flat foot is that the medial longitudinal arch collapses in weight bearing and returns normal arch when weight is removed and the weight bearing shifts toward medial part of the foot, which can cause pathological problems in the alignment of the lower extremities and the entire body. Objective: To compare the foot pressure for adults with flexible flat foot. Design: Quasi-Experimental Study Methods: 24 participants with flexible flat foot were recruited and were randomly divided into Visual feedback Short Foot Exercise (VSFE) group and Short Foot Exercise (SFE) group. To compare changes of foot pressure about pre and post intervention, the contact pressure measurement was conducted. Results: In the VSFE, significant differences were observed for the foot pressure of the 1st toe, 1st, 3rd and 4-5th metatarsal, midfoot, medial and lateral heel (p<.05). The foot pressure of the 3rd and 4-5th metatarsal, midfoot showed significant differences in the SFE (p<.05). The contact pressure of the 1st toe, 3rd metatarsal showed significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: Visual feedback short foot exercise can be useful for moving the pressure from medial to lateral part, and can prevent possible pathological problems.
This study identifies the foot shapes of elderly women by classifying foot type according to the 3D shape of the foot and 2D sole type analyzing individual characteristics. The subjects were 295 elderly women over 60 years of age who live in Gwangju. A foot scanner (K&I Technology $Nexcan^{(R)}$) was used to obtain three-dimensional shapes of feet and a flat bad scanner (HP Scanjet G2410) was used to obtain the two-dimensional shapes of soles. The anthropometric measuring items consisted of 59 items estimated on the right foot of each subject. Data were analyzed by various statistical methods such as factor analysis, ANOVA and cluster analysis using the SPSS 19.0 statistical program. To classify the side type of elderly women's feet, three-dimensional measurement data were analyzed for the 27 measurement items using factor analysis and 6 factors were extracted (inside height and side gradient, ankle thickness, toe height and midfoot size, lateral malleolus height, instep, and heel height and gradient). A cluster analysis resulted in three types: 36.5% belonged to Type 1 (high forefoot and high midfoot), 31.1% belonged to Type 2 (high forefoot and low midfoot), and 32.4% belonged to Type 3 (low forefoot and high midfoot). The distribution was relatively even. For the sole, 8 factors were extracted (ball width and medial foot protrusion, lateral foot protrusion, forefoot and hindfoot length ratio, ball gradient, heel size, toe breadth, lateral ball length, and foot length) and a cluster analysis resulted in three Types (Type H, Type D, and Type A). The largest proportion (42.7%) belonged to Type H, which is the same as the elderly men's case.
This study aims to define the isochronism of English feet. To assess the average value of moras of a foot, the study is, first, to set up a way of counting the number of the moras on the extrametricality with some modifications. Secondly, with the measurement of the average duration of feet of Shakespeare's 120 sonnets through Praat (version 4.030, 2002), it clarifies the foot isochronism in English. With the two ways of measuring the isochronism, it clarifies the fact the foot isochronism permits the difference scope of $2.2{\mu}'s$ (moras) to $1.8{\mu}'s$, that is, $22{\mu}'s$ to $18{\mu}'s$ per line, while the acoustic assessment shows the isochronically congnitive gap of 302-447msec. per foot, or 4,461msec. to 3,019msec. per line in case of iambic pentameter in English poetry.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of foot position and lifting an object on muscle activity and foot pressure during sit to stand(STS) in hemiparetic patients. Methods: Fourteen patients participated in this study. Surface electromyography was used to collect muscle activity and foot pressure measurement system was used to analyze foot pressure in hemiparetic side. Three different foot position was assumed(anterior, neutral, posterior) in hemiparetic side. The repeated two-way analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were conducted to determine statistical significance with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results were as follows. 1) Lower extremity muscle activity was significantly higher(p<0.05) in biceps femoris and tibialis anterior muscle during STS without holding an object. With changing positions of the affected foot, muscle activity was significantly increased (p<0.05) in vastus medialis and lateral gastrocnemius when the foot was positioned in posterior. 2) There was no significant difference(p>0.05) in foot pressure during STS with object holding and foot positioning. Conclusion: Muscle activity showed a significant increase when the foot was positioned in posterior in comparison to the muscle activity when the foot was in neutral or anterior position.
