In this study, a foods radioactivity monitoring sensor was developed as a part of basic research for household radioactivity monitoring, and its performance was evaluated using a calibration source. The prototype of the sensor was based on a CsI:Tl scintillator using a crystal light guide and Si photomultiplier. The light guide was introduced to improve gamma-ray detection efficiency. For quantitative evaluation, tests were conducted using $^{134}Cs$ liquid source. In the performance evaluation, It was confirmed that analysis of $^{134}Cs$: 100 Bq/L(kg) was possible. Thus, result of this study is expected to contribute to research in the development of the household foods radioactivity monitoring system.
This study was conducted to understand the overall status of the monitoring program for pesticide residues in foods of South Korea. Further propositions for its improvement were made, and from this study, the status on this program can be summarized as follows. In South Korea, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is responsible for overall control of pesticide residue monitoring. Depending on the time of monitoring (sampling at distribution or production step), the government agency responsible for monitoring is different: MFDS, Regional Offices of Food and Drug Safety and local governments are responsible for monitoring of foods at the distribution step, while the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS) and local governments are responsible for monitoring of foods in the production step (partially at sale and distribution steps). According to purpose of monitoring, domestic monitoring programs could be divided into two types: MFDS's "Residue Survey" and NAQS's "National Residue Survey" are conducted mainly for risk assessment purposes and various monitoring programs by the Regional Offices of Food and Drug Safety and local governments are conducted mainly for regulation purposes. For imported foods, monitoring should be conducted at both steps of customs clearance and distribution: the MFDS and the Regional Offices of Food and Drug Safety are responsible for the former, and for the latter, local governments are also responsible. However, it appeared that systematic and consistent monitoring programs are not being conducted for imported foods at the distribution step. Based on the information described above and more detailed information included in this paper, the following proposals for improving the monitoring program were forwarded: i) further clarification of monitoring program purpose, ii) strengthening of the monitoring program for imported foods, iii) providing the public with monitoring results by publication of an annual report and database. It is thought that exhaustive review on the pesticide residue monitoring program and efforts for its improvement are needed in order to assure both food safety and the success of the recently begun positive list system (PLS).
The regulation of labelling criterion for genetically modified (GM) foods has been enforced since 2001 in Korea. Therefore, GM soybean (GMS) or GM maize (GMM) processed foods must be labeled as GMO derived. We surveyed to see whether this regulation is kept relevantly or not and the distributive statue of GM processed foods. Using the method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based on endogenous gene (Le1n, SSIIb), promoter gene (P35S), terminator gene (NOS) and transgenic gene (RRS, Bt11, Bt176, GA21, T25, Mon810), we detected GMS and GMM processed foods circulating at the market in Busan area. Out of total 100 samples, 38 items were showed to be contaminated with recombinant gene by qualitative PCR. Among 82 domestic and 18 imported items, 32 (39.0%) and 6 (33.3%) items were detected with GM ingredients respectively. Also among the 80 soybean and 20 maize processed foods, 23 (28.7%) and 15 (75.0%) foods were sensitive to detect GMS and GMM ingredients respectively. For the qualitative PCR positive foods, we chased identity preservation (IP) certificates. And we verified that the PCR positive crops were grown up, harvested and shipped separately from GMO but just mixed with GMO in the threshold of the non attentional contamination levels (3%). Thus we can not find out any regulation-violent case at all. The results of this study will help to keep the regulations of GM labelling and be informative to consumers who want to know the laboratory results of GMO testing.

A method using PCR was developed for the monitoring of genetically modified soybean (GMS) and GMS derived foods utilized in the market. We designed 3 pairs of specific oligonucleotide primers based on epsps and pat inserted in GMS and ferritin gene as internal standards. Template DNAs isolated from soybean and processed foods were used for multiplex PCR with 3 primer sets. PCR, used with specific primer sets for GMS detection, showed the amplified DNA fragments with GMS template DNA. In this study, GMS containing epsps was detected from soy processed foods manufactured before GM food labeling system, however, GMS containing epsps or pat was not detected from soy processed foods manufactured after GM food labeling system.
In this study, biotin (vitamin B7) contents of frequently consumed foods in Korea were determined by using immunoaffinity column in conjunction with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The biotin contents of 24 foods of plant origin and 27 foods of animal origin were selected. The highest biotin contents in frequently consumed foods of plant origin were found in red beans (Huinguseul; 11.475 ㎍/100 g). On the other hand, biotin was not detected in any varieties of sorghum. For frequently consumed foods of animal origin, salted pollack roe (7.486 ㎍/100 g) showed the highest biotin content. However, beef and fish contained less biotin. All biotin analyses were conducted under analytical quality control. The limits of detection and limits of quantification of biotin were 0.007 and 0.023 ㎍/100 g, respectively, and the accuracy/recovery percentage was 95.35-105.02%. The precision values were 4.041% (repeatability) and 3.835% (reproducibility). Taken together, our data provide reliable data on the biotin contents of frequently consumed foods in Korea.
Backgrounds: The accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), March 2011, caused serious radioactive contamination over wide area in east Japan. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of the accident and the status of NPP. Materials and Methods: This paper provides a review on the status of radiation dose and radioactive contamination caused by the accident on the basis of publicized information. Results and Discussion: Monitoring of radiation dose and exposure dose of residents has been conducted extensively by the governments and various organizations. The effective dose of general residents due to the accident proved to be less than a mSv both for external and internal dose. The equivalent committed dose of thyroid was evaluated to be a few mSv in mean value and less than 50 mSv even for children. Monitoring of radioactivity concentration has been carried out on food ingredients, milk and tap water, and actual meal. These studies indicated the percentage of foods above the regulation standard was over 10% in 2011 but decreasing steadily with time. The internal dose due to foods proved to be tens of ${\mu}Sv$ and much less than that due to natural $^{40}K$ even in the Fukushima area and decreasing steadily, although high level concentration is still observed in wild plants, wild mushrooms, animals and some kind of fishes. Conclusion: According to extensive studies, not only the effect of the accident but also the pathway and countermeasures against radioactive contamination have been revealed, and they are applied very effectively for restoration of environment and reconstruction of the area.

As society advances and consumers' perception of food safety changes, the demand for the safety of refrigerated and distributed foods is spreading. In this paper, we build an ICT system that can collect the TTH data from the NFC tag, store it, analyze the food safety level using it. This service platform consists of the temperature monitoring NFC tag attached to individual packaged food, the smartphone with NFC sensor, and the monitoring server with a big data system. Consumers and administrators in this system can easily identify and predict the safety level of individual packaged foods in real time using the provided app on smartphones. In the field of food safety, the use of new technologies such as ICT can create new value by combining with existing food industry in addition to creating new market by new service.
This study initiates from the question of whether current advertising regulations are appropriate to be applied to the market. It confirms the relationship between misleading online advertisements of weight-loss food and consumer damages. This study argues that it is necessary to enforce monitoring and regulating (strengthening monitoring) for situations where misleading advertisements are exposed in the market with subsequent consumer damages. However, deregulation is needed for advertisements exposed in the name of misleading advertisements but with no consumer damages. In conclusion, the regulations of current weight loss foods are properly established $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ the market situation. However, misleading advertisements are prevalent for all regulated types: Type I (product quality and effect), Type II (endorsement and warranty), Type III (ways to use and safety), Type IV (comparison and superiority), and Type V (company information). Promotion targeting businesses, market monitoring and control are necessary to ensure that advertising regulations (which have existed only as an institution) can be appropriately applied. It is also confirmed that 'comparison advertising' (applicable to Type IV where consumer damages were not shown compared to other regulations) does not have an actual effect as a consumer protection regulation that should be considered in regulation revisions. Consumers also did not recognize Type III and V in the purchasing stage while consumer damages were demonstrated; consequently, this implies that consumers need to check and become attentive to these types.
For effective conservation of the oceans and harbors, long-term and systematic development of the ocean and harbor monitoring system is essential. A monitoring system capable of real-time and accurate data acquisition is necessary for dealing with the level of contamination by situations, such as red tide and foods. This paper introduces an effective and economical real-time harbor environmental monitoring system that utilizes PCS wireless data communication technology. The monitoring system has various functions, such as multiple communication, TCP/IP protocol for wireless internet access, system time synchronization, and bi-directional communication between the measuring device and the server. The system has been implemented at Shinseondae harbor pier in Busan to validate the system's stability and effectiveness in data acquisition. The acquired real-time ocean and harbor environmental data is expected to have a large effect, when shared with the public through the Internet.

Furan ($C_4H_4O$) is a volatile compound formed mostly during the thermal processing of foods. The toxicity of furan has been well documented previously, and it was classified as "possible human carcinogen (Group 2B)" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Various pathways have been reported for the formation of furan, that is, thermal degradation and/or thermal rearrangement of carbohydrates in the presence of amino acids, thermal degradation of certain amino acids, including aspartic acid, threonine, ${\alpha}$-alanine, serine, and cysteine, oxidation of ascorbic acid at higher temperatures, and oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and carotenoids. Owing to the complexity of the formation mechanism, a vast number of studies have been published on monitoring furan in commercial food products and on the potential strategies for reducing furan. Thus, we present a comprehensive review on the current status of commercial food monitoring databases and the possible furan reduction methods. Additionally, we review analytical methods for furan detection and the toxicity of furan.
