  • A review on the technical development and agricultural policy direction for sustainable agriculture has been made to clarify the present conditions of agricultural environment for food production and natural resource conservation and to study prospects and solutions successfully to achieve food safety and environment conservation as the 21st agricultural paradigm. Although great improvement of environmentally sound and resource-conserving techniques, sustainability of Korean agriculture has been damaged by quantitative reduction and quality deterioration of agricultural land resources, insufficient implementation of low-input and organic matter recycling techniques and also improper cropping system. It is concluded that goal of sustainable agriculture can be successfully achieved by further improvement of environmentally friendly techniques, and stronger escalation of national implementation programmes with more financial supports including direct payments for sustainability of agriculture under systematical support and cooperation of AKS (agricultural knowledge system).

  • In order to investigate the relationship between the prices of wood chips and pulps, regression analysis and cointegration test were conducted. Test results indicated that pulp producers adjusted pulp price in response to the change in wood-chip price and there were a long-run relationship between these prices. This implied that by raising the selling price of pulp, pulp producers avoid profit loss incurred by the increase in the wood-chip price. The existence of cointegration between wood chips and pulp prices implied that pulp producers were competing when they set the selling price of pulp.

  • We have synthesized various 6-substituted 2-oxo-purine nucleosides from key intemediate, 6-[(4-methylphenylthio)-2-oxo-9(2, 3, 5tri-o-acetyl-$\beta$-D-ribofuanoslyl)]-2, 3- dihydropurine in relatively high yields by one step nucleophilic substitution. Various isoguanosine, xanthosine analogs and other 2-oxo-purine nucleosides containing nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen at C-6 of purine base were easily obtained by this method. The structures of the products were established on the basis of their spectral data studies. And cytotoxicity of resulting synthetic 6-substituted-2-oxo-purine nucleosides against some tumor cell-lines was examined. $Ed_{50}$ values of these synthetic compounds were above $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ except isoguanosine, $N^6$-methyl isoguanosine and thioxanthosine analogs.

  • 2-Bromopropane (2-BP) is a major component of the mixture of SPG-6AR and Solvent 5200 that is a substitute of chlorofluorocarbon. Many female workers exposed to 2-bromopropane in a Korean electronic company were found to have amenorrhea and male workers were diagnosed with oligospermia. In the present studies, immunotoxic effects of 2-BP and an analog, 1,2-dibromopropane (1 ,2-DBP), were investigated in female BALB/c mice. (omitted)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a high protein diet containing barley on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. A total of fifty six [(Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire${\times}$Duroc)] pigs (85.08 kg in average initial body weight) were used for a 6-week study. Dietary treatments included 1) Basal diet (CON) and 2) High protein diet with barley 5% (HB5). During the entire test periods, there were no significant differences in Average daily gain (ADG), Average daily feed intake (ADFI) and gain/feed ratio between treatments (p>0.05). The b value of M. logissimus dorsi muscle color was significantly increased in CON fed pigs compared to pigs fed the HB5 diet (p<0.05). The water holding capacity (WHC) was higher in HB5 than CON fed pigs (p<0.05). Also, drip loss was significantly decreased in HB5 compared to CON fed pigs (p<0.05). Backfat thickness, live weight, cold carcass weight, dressing, and carcass grade were not significantly affected by either treatment (p>0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that a high protein diet with 5% barley affects meat color, WHC and drip loss in finishing pigs.

  • The FoodTech industry has been developed with the rise of start-up by using AI, big data, robotics, biotechnology. In addition, sustainable development is more important with the trend of population growth, aging, and climate change. We investigated the impact of FoodTech on the foodservice industry with the cases of the global and domestic companies. The technology of AI, IoT, blockchain, robotics, automation systems are widely used to improve food safety and hygiene while as the use of diagnostic biomarkers such as blood or DNA, digital platform and app, and AI-based solutions are used in the field of personalized nutrition. With the expand of FoodTech in foodservice industry, the competencies that the managers need to develop include understanding technology, resource management, self-development, work ethics, problem-solving, and communication, therefore the support of the related education and training is required.

  • The concept of food security has gained increasing attention during the food crisis period between 2006 and 2011. According to the FAO, food security is defined as an access by all people at all times to the food needed for healthy and active life. Achieving food security means that sufficient food is available, food supply is relatively stable, and those in need of food can afford food at a reasonable cost. After a short period of stable food prices the world is facing another food crisis due mainly to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion over Ukraine. Food security has re-emerged as an urgent problem to the world. There have been two conflicting opinions about how to achieve food security. Agricultural exporting countries insist diversification of food sources and freer trade on the top of domestic self-reliance. On the other hand, food importing countries emphasize self-sufficiency of major food crops. This study investigates whether domestic agricultural production contributes to strengthening food security. The panel data analysis shows that the increase in food self-sufficiency raises the Global Food Security Index and lessens the probability of food riots, while lower import tariffs (implying freer trade) do not. Some related issues are discussed accordingly.
