In this study, we researched the characteristics of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emission of the wastewater treatment (WWT) process in the dairy industry. For flux measurements at the air-water interface, a floating dynamic flow-through chamber was used above the water surface. $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ concentration from the WWT process was measured by NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) Analyser. In the study, $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ fluxes results showed a distinct difference for each WWT process. 60% of the GHG emissions which was the highest percentage were from the equalization tank. Reactor tank was second with 27% of the total emissions from the WWT. Aeration tank was third with 12% of the total emissions. The tendency was that the more the wastewater was treated, the less GHGs were emitted. $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ showed the same tendency. This indicates that the concentrations and properties of wastewater could affect the tendency.

The study was performed to evaluate the effects of chloride concentrations on the ultimate aerobic biodegradability and to use the result as the fundamental data for sea food wastewater treatment. When the organic removal efficiency by chloride concentrations (1,400~18,000 mg/L) was evaluated, microbes adapted to the saline at ${\leq}$ 6,000 mg/L of chloride but treatment efficiency was not improved at ${\geq}$ 12,000 mg/L of chloride because of delayed reaction time. Functional coefficient $Y_I$ of non-biodegradable soluble organic and inert material production coefficient Yp by microbe metabolism increased as chloride concentrations increased. Soluble organic matter ratio by chloride concentration (0~18,000 mg/L) was 10.8~13.1%, inert material production efficiency by microbes metabolism was evaluated as 7.0~24.6%. $NH_3$-N removal efficiencies were 96.2, 96.5, 90.2 and 90.3% using original wastewater HRT 18 hr, 6,000 mg/L chloride concentration HRT 22 hr, 12,000 mg/L chloride concentration HRT 30 hr, and 18,000 mg/L chloride concentration HRT 45 hr, respectively. Nitrification process was more sensitive to salt concentration than organic matter removal to salt concentration. Under ${\geq}$ 6,000 mg/L chloride concentration, conversion rate from $NO_s$-N to $NO_2$-N was low.
When fish meat is washed for the processing of surimi, about 50ff of lipid in the fish meat is removed from the fish meat to the effluent. The removed lipid was easily recovered by centrifugation or filteration of wastewater washed fish meat. Then, the recovered lipid was utilized as a material of mayonnaise sauce processing. The major fatty acids in the recovered lipids are $C_{16:0},\;C_{18:0},\;C_{16:1},\;C_{20:5},\;and\;C_{22:6}$ Polyenoic fatty acids were composed of $33.6\%$ to total fatty acids. When the recovered lipid was substituted for soybean oil in processing of mayonnaise sauce, the maximum percentage of substitution ratio presumed to be $30\%$ according to viscosity, color difference, and emulsion stability evalution for the substituted ones.

The influence of bacterial stress on anaerobic hydrogen-producing microorganisms was investigated in batch tests using serum bottles. Several physical and chemical stresses (i.e., heating, adding methane producing inhibitor and chemical acidification) were adapted as a pretreament of the seed sludge. In this experiment, the cultivation temperature were set at mesophilic ($35^{\circ}C$) and thermophilic conditions ($55^{\circ}C$) with adjusting pH at 5, 6, and 7 when using the mixture of food waste and activated sludge as a substrate. In conjunction with the pretreatment, hydrogen production was significantly enhanced as compared with that from untreated sludge. However, less biogas (hydrogen and methane) was produced without the pH control, resulted from the decrease of pH to below 4, mainly due to the formation of VFAs. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas were analyzed as main components of the biogas while methane not detected. With an application of chemical acidification, the highest hydrogen production value of 248 ml/l/day achieved at pH 7 and $35^{\circ}C$. In addition, more hydrogen gas produced when the ratio of butyric/acetic acid ratio increased. The optimum pH and temperature for hydrogen production were found to be 7 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Aquifer storage transfer and recovery (ASTR) is a type of managed aquifer recharge which entails injecting water into a storage well and recovering it from a different well. It has effects of natural purification when injected water passes through aquifer medium, and can be a good way of supplying water especially in a region with poor surface water quality. This study is about an on-going effort to introduce ASTR as a solution to source water problems in coastal areas. A pilot study is being conducted in the delta of the Nakdong River. A proactive management system is incorporated to ensure the water qulity in the process of drinking water process. The system is based on the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) which is a tool originated from the food industry in order to assess hazards and establish control systems for the safety of food product. In this paper, we analyze hazardous events which can occur in the entire water supply system using ASTR as a first step to the incorporation of HACCP to drinking water production process.

Purpose: High concentrations of nitrogen exist in food wastewater, and when nitrogen is not properly treated and discharged, it can cause eutrophication in the aquatic ecosystem. Research design, data and methodology: In order to remove nitrogen using sodium hypochlorite, the BNCR tank was designed and installed in the step behind the biological treatment tank, and the data of pH, TOC, and T-N were collected after about a month of demonstration. Results: As a result of operating the BNCR tank, total nitrogen decreased by about 83% on average. The total nitrogen in the second sedimentation tank before going through the BNCR tank must be removed and finally discharged after nitrogen is removed above the legal standard of 60 mg/L. Conclusions: If BNCR tank is added to the process currently applied to nitrogen removal and operated, ammonia nitrogen can be removed more efficiently. However, the disadvantage is that nitric acid nitrogen and nitric acid nitrogen cannot be removed. If these disadvantages are supplemented and optimized in the future, it will be helpful for workplaces that are having difficulty removing nitrogen.

In order to reduce salt(as NaCl) contents in food waste and to improve the quality of discharged wastewater produced during the recycling process of food waste for the purpose of compost and feed stuff, a salt reduction process by added water into food waste was developed. The pilot plant with a rotary type salt reduction equipment to manage continuously 0.5 ton food waste per hour was constructed and the efficiency was tested. The amount of added water was calculated by the water content and the efficiency of dewatering process of food waste. Approximately 0.8 liter water per a kilogram of food waste was injected into the reactor in which food waste was pouring simultaneously, then diluted/mixed in a rotary reactor. About 1.1 liter of leachate including added water was generated, but the leachate contained a very high content of organic particles, so most particles were recovered by two step solid-liquid separation process. The first step was a gravitational filtering process using screens with a pore diameter of 1mm, and the second separation process was centrifugal process. Organic quality of food waste which had been desalted was maintained by inputting the entirely recovered organic particles. The efficiency of salt reduction of food waste was estimated by measuring a chloride anion by titration and salinity by a probe. The results by the two different measuring methods were always over 50%, and the quality of final wastewater was improved up to $200mg/{\ell}$ as TS(total solid) by an additional settling process after the two step solid-liquid separation process.
VFAs like acetate are the major soluble metabolites of food waste leachates after digested. Therefore this study investigates the effect of acetate on growth rate and nutrient removal efficiency of Chlorella vulgaris to treat digested food waste leachates. The initial acetate concentration varied from 0 to 20 mM. As a result, Chlorella vulgaris growth rate was increased as high as the concentrations ranged from 0 to 20 mM. The same trend was observed with $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P consumption. The highest growth rate and the highest $NH_4$-N, $PO_4$-P removal rate were observed at acetate concentration of 20 mM. The microalgae growth rate and $NH_4$-N, $PO_4$-P removal rates were 1.5, 1.8, 2.3 times higher than the condition without acetate.
Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was applied to optimize the thermal-alkaline pre-treatment operating conditions for anaerobic digestion of flotation scum in food waste leachate. Three independent variables such as thermal temperature, NaOH concentration and reaction time were evaluated. The maximum methane production of 369.2 mL $CH_4/g$ VS was estimated under the optimum conditions at $62.0^{\circ}C$, 10.1% NaOH and 35.4 min reaction time. A confirmation test of the predicted optimum conditions verified the validity of the BBD with RSM. The analysis of variance indicated that methane production was more sensitive to both NaOH concentration and thermal temperature than reaction time. Thermal-alkaline pretreatment enhanced the improvement of 40% in methane production compared to the control experiment due to the effective hydrolysis and/or solubilization of organic matters. The fractions with molecular weight cut-off of scum in food waste leachate were conducted before and after pre-treatment to estimate the behaviors of organic matters. The experiment results found that thermal-alkaline pre-treatment could reduce the organic matters more than 10kD with increase the organic matters less than 1kD.
