  • Using a new evaluation method, Congo red method, the foliar uptakes of eight fungicides were measured. Among the fungicides tested, fenarimol, myclobutanil, edifenphos, isoprothiolane, and tricyclazole were found to be penetrable (11.0~42.8%), and were continuously absorbed into the leaf regardless of their formulation types. Procymidone, dimethomorpb, and ethaboxan were seldomly absorbed into plant leaf. The uptakes of dimethomorph and ethaboxam were facilitated (18.1~22.7%) in the presence of Koremul-OE-20, as an activator, showing plateau phase at 12h after application. Foliar uptake of fenarimol and myclobutanil into cucumber plant by spray application was larger than that by dropping application, while observed opposite in the cases of dimethomorph and ethaboxam containing activator. Congo red method in conjunction with spraying application used in the present study produced the clear results on foliar uptake of fungicides and therefore proved to be better than the conventional method in which the dropping application of pesticide has been used.

  • The effects of foliar spray and soil drench application of triazole chemicals (diniconazole, myclobutanil, difenoconazole, tebuconazole, bitertanol, hexaconazole) on growth and flowering control in zinnia were investigated. For foliar spray application of tebuconazole, diniconazole and bitertanol on 'Dream Land Rose', plant height was decreased but tebuconazole gave the best result for dwarfing. Diameter, fresh and dry weights of flower were markably decreased at high concentration of tebuconazole. However, days to flowering was not affected by chemicals tested. For 'Dream Land Scarlet', plant height was decreased with all chemical treatments. Tebuconazole severely decreased plant height, in particulas. Diniconazole hastened flowering. For soil drench of 'Dream Land Rose', plant height was decreased by diniconazole and mycrobutanil, but diniconazole was more effective for plant height decrease. Flowering was hastened by diniconazole in both 'Dream Land Rose' and 'Dream Land Scarlet'. Plant height of 'Dream Land Scarlet' was decreased by all chemicals tested. Flowering was not occurred at $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ myclobutanil with severe suppression of stem growth.

  • The effects of seed soaking (8 and 24 hours) and foliar spray of plant growth retardants (daminozide, chlormequat and uniconazole) on growth control in zinnia were investigated. For seed soaking of 'Dream Land Rose', the changes in plant height was not affected by seed soaking time (8 and 24 hours), while it was severely suppressed by high concentration of chemicals tested. An application of $125mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole was most effective for plant height suppression. Flowering was promoted by all treatments of chemicals. However, for 'Dream Land Scarlet', plant height control at 24 hours seed soaking showed more effective than 8 hours, and all treatments of chemicals decreased plant height. Uniconazole gave the best result for plant height control. Flowering tended to be hastened by the treatment of chemicals. For foliar spray, plant height was remarkably decreased at high concentration of uniconazole. Flowering was promoted by chlormequat and uniconazole in both 'Dream Land Rose' and 'Dream Land Scarlet'. Also, daminozide decreased number of petals.

  • This is the first report that paromomycin, an antibiotic derived from Streptomyces sp. AG-P 1441 (AG-P 1441), controlled Phytophthora blight and soft rot diseases caused by Phytophthora capsici and Pectobacterium carotovorum, respectively, in chili pepper (Capsicum annum L.). Chili pepper plants treated with paromomycin by foliar spray or soil drenching 7 days prior to inoculation with P. capsici zoospores showed significant (p < 0.05) reduction in disease severity (%) when compared with untreated control plants. The disease severity of Phytophthora blight was recorded as 8% and 50% for foliar spray and soil drench, respectively, at 1.0 ppm of paromomycin, compared with untreated control, where disease severity was 83% and 100% by foliar spray and soil drench, respectively. A greater reduction of soft rot lesion areas per leaf disk was observed in treated plants using paromomycin (1.0 μg/ml) by infiltration or soil drench in comparison with untreated control plants. Paromomycin treatment did not negatively affect the growth of chili pepper. Furthermore, the treatment slightly promoted growth; this growth was supported by increased chlorophyll content in paromomycin-treated chili pepper plants. Additionally, paromomycin likely induced resistance as confirmed by the expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes: PR-1, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase, PR-4, peroxidase, and PR-10, which enhanced plant defense against P. capsici in chili pepper. This finding indicates that AG-P 1441 plays a role in pathogen resistance upon the activation of defense genes, by secretion of the plant resistance elicitor, paromomycin.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of boron treatments on flower spike dieback of Statice (Limonium spp.) grown in soilless hydroponic and soil cultures under rain shelter system. The growth of Statice was gradually improved with increasing boron applications in the hydroponics, but not in soil culture with boron treatment as foliar spray or soil application. The degree of flower spike dieback in 6 levels (0, no dieback incidence to 5, very severe dieback incidence) ranged between 0.5 with boron application and 4.4 with no boron treatment. The content of boron in Statice flower spike increased with increasing rates of boron applications in the hydroponics, but the contents of P, Mg, and N were not affected by the boron application. However, K content was highest with no boron treatment. In soil culture, incidence of flower spike dieback decreased with foliar spray or soil application of boron. Therefore, boron application was effective in reducing flower spike dieback and improving cut-flower productivity and its quality, and the recommended rates of boron application were $50{\sim}80{\mu}gL^{-1}$ for hydroponics culture whereas 0.2% borex or ${\geq}0.4kg\;10a^{-1}$ boric acid by foliar spray application for soil culture.

  • To select of optimum rice species and germanium (Ge) application method for production of functional rice with Ge, the growth characteristics, Ge absorption and grain quality of rice plant were investigated under different rice species (Hopyungbyeo, Junambyeo, Ilmeebyeo and Dongjinbyeo) and Ge application method (soil application and foliar spray). The rice yield by soil application was higher in the order of Hopyungbyeo $\fallingdotseq$ Junambyeo > Ilmeebyeo >> Dongjinbyeo. On the other hand, the rice yield by foliar spray was higher in the order of Junambyeo >> Ilmeebyeo > Dongjinbyeo > Hopyungbyeo. The rice yield by soil application was higher than that by foliar spray regardless of rice species. For soil application, the Ge absorption in various parts of the rice was higher in the other of rice bran > brown rice > polished rice regardless of rice species. The Ge absorption of brown rice in Hopyungbyeo, Ilmeebyeo, Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo by soil application was 14.5, 8.0, 11.6 and $10.4\;mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. In leaf, stem and root, the Ge absorption by foliar spray was higher than that by soil application, whereas, in rice bran, brown rice and polished rice, the Ge absorption by soil application was higher than that by foliar spray. The optimum rice species and Ge application method were demonstrated to be Hopyungbyeo and soil application, respectively, which provided suitable conditions for production of functional rice with Ge.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of nutrient solution pH control agent and foliar spray of ethephon on the reduction of stem inside-cavity and improvement of flower quality in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Changes of pH in nutrient solution as affected by the kind of pH control agent showed more settled pattern in the plot of KOH treatment than in others. Plant growth and development such as cut flower length, leaf numbers, cut flower weight and petal number were the greatest in the plot of KOH. However, the size and area of stem cavity was large in KOH rather than $KHCO_3$. As changes in the absorbing patterns of mineral elements as affected by nutrient solution pH control agent in closed system, contents of total nitrate, phosphorus, potassium and calcium by $KHCO_3$ was absorbed into the plant less than KOH, so that it remained a lot of mineral element residues rather than KOH in closed system. Plant growth as affected by the foliar spray of ethephon showed growth retardation effect in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 500 and growth promotion effect in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 1,000 or 1 : 2,000. The number of petals was the best in the plot of foliar spray of ethephon solution diluted to 1 : 1,000 before flowering at 45 days showing 331 petals compared to control showing 302 petals. The size and area of stem cavity as affected the foliar spray of ethephon was smaller 1 mm and 7%, respectively, in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 2,000 before flowering at 30 days than in control. Therefore, treating pH stabilization using KOH after floral initiation stage with the foliar spray of ethephon solution diluted to 1 : 2,000 before flowering at 30 days would help to reduce stem cavity size and improve flower quality in hydroponically grown chrysanthemum 'Baekma'.

  • Systemic effect of two plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains, viz., Pseudomonas fluorescens (Pf4) and P. aeruginosa (Pag), was evaluated on pea (Pisum sativum) against the powdery mildew pathogen Erysiphe pisi. Foliar spray of the two PGPR strains was done on specific nodal leaves of pea and conidial germination of E. pisi was observed on other nodal leaves, distal to the treated ones. Conidial germination was reduced on distant leaves and at the same time, specific as well as total phenolic compounds increased in the leaves distal to those applied with PGPR strains, thereby indicating a positive correlation. The strains induced accumulation of phenolic compounds in pea leaves and the amount increased when such leaves were get inoculated with E. pisi conidia. Between the two strains, Pag was found to be more effective than Pf4 as its effect was more persistent in pea leaves. Foliar application of PGPR strains for the control of powdery mildew of pea is demonstrated in vitro while correlating it with the increased accumulation of plant phenolics.
