  • This paper investigates the effect of inclusion of glass fibers on mechanical and fracture properties of binary blend geopolymer concrete produced by using fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. To study the effect of glass fibers, the mix design parameters like binder content, alkaline solution/binder ratio, sodium hydroxide concentration and aggregate grading were kept constant. Four different volume fractions (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4%) and two different lengths (6 mm, 13 mm) of glass fibers were considered in the present study. Three different notch-depth ratios (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were considered for determining the fracture properties. The test results indicated that the addition of glass fibers improved the flexural strength, split tensile strength, fracture energy, critical stress intensity factor and critical crack mouth opening displacement of geopolymer concrete. 13 mm fibers are found to be more effective than 6 mm fibers and the optimum dosage of glass fibers was found to be 0.3% (by volume of concrete). The study shows the enormous potential of glass fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete in structural applications.

  • The authors have proposed that waste glass, which is crushed to pieces, can be used as a concrete aggregate. At the present time, recycled-glass concrete is used for sidewalk concrete blocks and pavement as glass is ornamental. However, in cases where recycled-glass concrete is used for structural concrete, strength and durability are required as structural concrete is exposed to the weather. Glass that is used generally is a mixture of SiO$_2$, Na$_2$O and CaO. SiO$_2$is the most likely cause of alkali-aggregate reaction when waste glass was used for concrete aggregate. In this study, an alkali-aggregate reaction test that is one of the important tests related to durability of aggregate was carried out far discussion of utilization of waste glass for concrete aggregate. From the results of the tests, it is found that glass is a reactive aggregate. The pessimum proportion of glass is about 75%. Then the cases of using fly ash, blast furnace slag and artificial zeolite for admixture materials were also examined for the purpose of prevention of alkali-aggregate reaction. from the results of the test, it was found that using them is an effective way to prevent alkali-aggregate reaction. The compressive strength in the cases of using admixture materials is larger than that without admixture materials.

  • The curing temperature is known to influence the rate of mechanical properties development of early age concrete. In realistic sites the temperature of concrete is not isothermal $20^{\circ}C$, so the paper measured adiabatic temperature increases of four different concretes to understand heat emission during hydration at early age. The temperature-matching curing schedule in accordance with adiabatic temperature increase is adopted to simulate the situation in real massive concrete. The specimens under temperature-matching curing are subjected to realistic temperature for first few days as well as adiabatic condition. The mechanical properties including compressive strength, splitting strength and modulus of elasticity of concretes cured under both temperature-matching curing and isothermal $20^{\circ}C$ curing are investigated. The results denote that comparing temperature-matching curing with isothermal $20^{\circ}C$ curing, the early age concretes mechanical properties are obviously improved, but the later mechanical properties of concretes with pure Portland and containing silica fume are decreased a little and still increased for concretes containing fly ash and slag. On this basement using an equivalent age approach evaluates mechanical properties of early age concrete in real structures, the model parameters are defined by the compressive strength test, and can predict the compressive strength, splitting strength and elasticity modulus through measuring or calculating by finite element method the concreted temperature at early age, and the method is valid, which is applied in a concrete wall for evaluation of crack risking.

  • Due to the undeniable importance of approximating the concrete compressive strength (CSC) in civil engineering, this paper focuses on presenting four novel optimizations of multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network, namely artificial bee colony (ABC-MLP), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA-MLP), shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA-MLP), and salp swarm algorithm (SSA-MLP) for predicting this crucial parameter. The used dataset consists of 103 rows of information concerning seven influential parameters (cement, slag, water, fly ash, superplasticizer, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate). In this work, the best-fitted complexity of each ensemble is determined by a population-based sensitivity analysis. The GOA distinguished its self by the least complexity (population size = 50) and emerged as the second time-effective optimizer. Referring to the prediction results, all tested algorithms are able to construct reliable networks. However, the SSA (Correlation = 0.9652 and Error = 1.3939) and GOA (Correlation = 0.9629 and Error = 1.3922) performed more accurately than ABC (Correlation = 0.7060 and Error = 4.0161) and SFLA (Correlation = 0.8890 and Error = 2.5480). Therefore, the SSA-MLP and GOA-MLP can be promising alternatives to laboratorial and traditional CSC evaluative methods.

  • In the present study, soft computing i.e., machine learning techniques and regression models algorithms have earned much importance for the prediction of the various parameters in different fields of science and engineering. This paper depicts that how regression models can be implemented for the prediction of compressive strength of concrete. Three models are taken into consideration for this; they are Gaussian Process for Regression (GPR), Multi Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS) and Minimax Probability Machine Regression (MPMR). Contents of cement, blast furnace slag, fly ash, water, superplasticizer, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and age in days have been taken as inputs and compressive strength as output for GPR, MARS and MPMR models. A comparatively large set of data including 1030 normalized previously published results which were obtained from experiments were utilized. Here, a comparison is made between the results obtained from all the above mentioned models and the model which provides the best fit is established. The experimental results manifest that proposed models are robust for determination of compressive strength of concrete.

  • This paper investigate that the effect of the concrete containing mineral admixtures(pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fume and meta kaolin) on the resistance properties to chloride ion invasion. The purposed testing procedure was applied to the concrete added mineral admixtures for 3~4 replacement ratios under W/B ratios ranged from 0.40 to 0.55. For the electrical migration test, Tang and Nilsson's method was used to estimate the migration coefficient of chloride ion. As a results, the W/B ratios, kinds of admixture and replacement ratios, water curing periods had a great effect on the migration coefficient of chloride ion, and the optimal replacement ratios of admixture had a limitation for each admixtures. Also, the addition of mineral admixtures by mass(replacement of OPC) enhanced the resistance of the mixture to chloride penetration compared with the plain concrete. The amount of acid soluble chloride ions and water soluble chloride ions were varied with the kinds of mineral admixtures. The compressive strength was shown related to the migration coefficient of chloride ion, the compressive strength increased with the decreasing migration coefficient of chloride ion. Below the 50MPa, the variation of migration coefficient of concrete added mineral admixtures was bigger than plain concrete.

  • In this paper, the flowability, strengths, impact resistance and sulfuric acid resistance of steel fiber reinforced high performance concrete (SFHPC) for the steel fiber content and fly ash and blast furnace slag as admixtures were presented. For evaluating flowability particularly, tests of slump flow, box-type passing ability and L-type filling ability were performed. The slump flow of SFHPC was some decreased with increase of the steel fiber content. At the box-type passing ability, the difference of box height of SFHPC is greatly increased with increasing the fiber content. The L-type filling ability of SFHPC was not excellent above $0.75\% of the steel fiber content. Also, the compressive strength of SFHPC was decreased with increase of the steel fiber content, but the flexural strength of SFHPC was much higher than that of the concrete without the steel fiber. At the impact resistance, drop number of SFHPC for reaching final fracture was increased with increase of the fiber content. Also, the drop number for reaching initial fracture of lmm was increased with increase of the fiber content. At the sulfuric acid resistance, 4-week weight change of SFHPC with the steel fiber was almost similarity that of HPC without the steel fiber and was in the range of 73.6 to 81.5.

  • Coal-fired power plants supply roughly 50 percent of the nation's electricity but produce a disproportionate share of electric utility-related air pollution. Coal combustion technology can facilitate volume reduction of up to 90%, with the inorganic contaminants being captured in furnace bottom ash and fly ash residues. These disposal coal ash residues are however governed by the potential release of constituent contaminants into the environment. Accelerated carbonation process has been shown to have a potential for improving the chemical stability and leaching behavior of bottom ash residues. The aim of this work was to quantify the volume of $CO_2$ that could be sequestrated with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize the contaminated heavy metals from bottom ash samples. In this study, we used PC boiler bottom ash, Kanvera reactor (KR) slag and calcined waste lime for measuring chemical analysis and heavy metals leaching tests were performed and also the formation of calcite resulting from accelerated carbonation process was investigated by thermo gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA).

  • Cement paste is originally the basic material and crucial factor consisting concrete. This study investigates the relationship between flow apparatuses, which are ring flow(R-F), flow cone(F-C) and mini slump(M-S), in order to estimate the fluidity of cement Paste. For quantitatively evaluating the measured data this study also investigated the calibration of the rheology consistent, such as yield value and plastic viscosity, of cement paste using viscometer For this purpose the present work discussed the influence of 3 type of ordinary portland cement with different companies, affecting the fluidity of cement paste. and it also demonstrated the influence of the various kinds of mineral admixtures, such as fly ash(FA), blast furnace slag(BS) and silica fume(SF) and that of incorporating ratio. The author concluded that using R-F apparatus is the most effective flow test method of cement paste and it is exactly proportional to other apparatus' rheological properties.
