The majority of fly ash pipes in thermal power stations use steel pipes. This makes frequent replacement inevitable due to severe abrasion near the hot and curved section of pipes. Recently, there have been efforts to prevent this abrasion with lining techniques using ceramic or basalt on the inner wall of the pipe. This study uses composite and anti-wear material to maximize the anti-abrasion effects on the hot section of the pipe. The thickness of the abrasion layer was determined by the abrasion ratio of material found through the experiment; the thickness of the reinforcement layer was determined by micromechanics. Experiments were conducted on epoxy resins to test for heat and abrasion. Anti-abrasion test using particle impingement was intended to recreate realistic conditions when abrasion occurs within the hot section of an actual pipe. This study analyzes the abrasion ratio obtained from both the specimen experiment and from on-site measurement and provides evidence that a combination of composites and anti-wear agent can be used to create a fly ash pipe that is lower in costs and higher in quality than what is used currently.
In this study, a fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) pipe with superior wear resistance was developed to replace the fly ash pipe of cast iron. Wear test was performed with various combinations of SiC filler and resin materials of unsaturated polyester, vinylester, epoxy, and phenol. Test results of ASTM D4060 showed the optimal combinations of resin, filler size, and resin/filler ratios. Test results of comparison between FRP and cast iron showed the possibility to replace cast iron pipe with the FRP pipe. Field test executed to compare the wear resistance between cast iron pipe and developed FRP pipe showed the superiority of the FRP pipe.
Prediction of the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles has been one of the important problems in powder technology. The sphericity of fly ash particles depending on the particle diameter was measured by means of a CCD image processing instrument. An algorithm to predict the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles is proposed. The maximum packing volume fraction is used to predict the slurry viscosity under well dispersed conditions. For this purpose, Simha's cell model is applied for concentrated slurry with wide particle size distribution. Also, Usui's model developed for aggregative slurries is applied to predict the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash - water slurry. It is certified that the maximum packing volume fraction for non-spherical particles can be successfully used to predict slurry viscosity. The pressure drop in a pipe flow is predicted by using the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash-water slurry obtained by the present model. The predicted relationship between pressure drop and flow rate results in a good agreement with the experimented data obtained for a test rig with 50 mm inner diameter tube. Base on the design procedure proposed in this study, a feasibility study of fly ash hydraulic transportation system from a coal-fired power station to a controlled deposit site is carried out to give a future prospect of inexpensive fly ash transportation technology.

The objective of this paper is to minimize installation length of pipeline and to reduce burial depth for construction by increasing the friction coefficient caused by the interface between backfill material and pipeline. And then, the sufficient friction coefficient shortens the length of expansion joint pipe and gives the life extension of expansion joint absorber for efficient procedure regarding maintenance and administration of construction. The backfill material which is developed in this study has larger and smaller friction angle than that of conventional backfill material (river sand). The backfill material with tire powder provides low friction angle at curved section when pipe diameter increases in size (38% reduction at pipe diameter in 900 mm). When using backfill material with river sand and fly-ash, the mixture mixed with 1.5% fly-ash has 30% and that with 3% fly-ash has 50% reduction effect for minimum installation length of expansion joint pipe.

The compounds of recycled polyethylene(PE) and fly-ashes were prepared. Polymers used were sorted PE from mixed plastics of household waste and Low Density Polyethylene(LDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene(LLDPE) recycled from the scrap of packaging film plants. Fly-ashes were from the power plant and from the household waste incinerator. The tensile strength of recycled LDPE and LLDPE compounds decreased and the flexural modulus increased with greater amount of the power plant fly-ash. Anthracite fly-ash gave rise to slightly higher tensile and flexural strength of the LLDPE mixtures than bituminous coal fly-ash presumably due to higher content of unburned carbon. The incinerator fly-ash introduced to household waste PE enhanced both tensile strength and flexural modulus of the compounds. When LDPE and household waste PE were used together, the synergistic effect of incinerator fly-ash to household waste PE was offset by reduced crystallization of LDPE due to the filler particle. The compounds of household waste PE and incinerator fly-ash might be applied to structural materials for such as sewage pipe, which reduces the waste treatment cost and conserve the environment and resources.

This study was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of permeable polymer concrete using fillers and unsaturated polyester resin. The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The unit weight was in the range of 1, 663~ l, 892kg/$cm^3$, the weights of those concrete were decreased 18~28% than that of the normal cement concrete. 2. The highest strength was achieved by fly ash filled permeable polymer concrete, it was increased 22% by compressive strength, 190% by tensile strength and 192% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 3. The external strength of permeable pipe was in the range of 3, 083~3, 793kg/m, the external strengths of those concrete were increased 2~26% than that of the normal cement concrete. Accordingly, these permeable polymer concrete pipe can be used to the members and structures which need external strength. 4. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $5.7{\times} 10^4 ~ 15.4{\times} 10{^4}kg/cm^2 $, which was approximately 35~64% of that of the normal cement concrete. Fly ash filled permeable polymer concrete was showed relatively higher elastic modulus. The poisson's number of permeable polymer concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 5. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $83{\times} 10^3 ~ 211{\times} 10{^3}kg/cm^2 $, which was approximately Ins compared to that of the normal cement concrete. Fly ash filled permeable polymer concrete was showed higher dynamic modulus. The dynamic modulus of elasticity were increased approximately 22~45% than that of the static modulus. 6. The ultrasonic pulse velocity was in the range of 2, 584 ~ 3, 587m/sec, . which was showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. Fly ash filled permeable polymer concrete was in the range of$0.58~8.88 {\ell}/cm^2/hr$, , and it was larglely dependent upon the mixing ratio. These concrete can be used to the structures which need water permeability.
The virgin and recycled polyethylene composites with various ratio of fly ash were manufactured by using a fully intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder for the reuse of fly ash from power plant and post-consumed polyethylene. Fly ash were blended with virgin HDPE and recycled polyethylene at the weight fraction of 0 to 40 wt.%. Mechanical properties such as yield strength, abrasion resistance, and slow crack resistance were measured with ISO and ASTM standards. The experimental results for the various composites showed that the elongation at break and the yield stress of the composites decreased with increasing fly ash contents. Generally, the abrasion resistance of PEs decreased with increasing sandpaper grits but the abrasion resistance of the composites increased with fly ash content at finer abrasive surface. The slow crack growth resistance of virgin HDPE, recycled JRPE and the JRPE composite showed higher slow crack growth resistance up to 50% of load at notch depth of 20% and 30%, but KRPE and the KRPE composite showed much lower resistance than virgin HDPE, JRPE and the JRPE composite. Time to break, measured with NCLS test method, of all PEs and the composites satisfies the regulation of Korean Industrial Specification for sewer pipe and support application.

This study introduces a densification technique of controlled low strength materials (CLSM) made with coal ashes by pump discharge pressure. Based on a small-scale laboratory test results, unit weight of CLSM around discharge pipe is greater than that of relatively some distant area from discharge pipe. It is also found that densification of CLSM depends on not only mixture rate of pond ash but also fly ash and location of discharge pipe.

Due to current interest in creation of urban space and urban landscape, more emphasis has been placed on underground space development. With increasing number of underground power cables and its importance, a study of backfill materials for pipe is now imperative. Backfill materials require outstanding thermal characteristics since breakdown of cable insulation can be caused if heat generated from transmission of underground power cables had not been effectively discharged through backfill materials. Also, coal ash, which are industrial by-products, is being produced in high volume every year. Among them, ponded ash (PA) is not recycled and instead, mostly buried. Therefore in this study, thermal conductivity test based on mixture ratio (PA, ponded ash : FA, fly ash) was performed to evaluate the thermal conductivity characteristics of CLSM (controlled low strength materials) with coal ash. The results indicate that the mixture ratio (PA, ponded ash : FA, fly ash) of 80:20, water contents of 28~30%, and cement contents of 7-11% showed the highest conductivity at 0.796~0.884W/mK and thus, considered optimal in terms of recycling ponded ash (PA) as well as for maximizing utilization as backfill materials for pipe in underground.

Recently, the importance of the conutermeasures for waste materials has pointed out. Waste glass is also one to waste materials used for the recycling in construction sites. The crushed waste glass has been used to make a glass polymer composite that can be applied for sewer, storm drain pipe and interlocking block, etc. In this study, the crushed waste glass is explored with the possibility of recycling it, as a substitute for fine aggregates. The prepose of this investigation is to improve the strengths and acid resistance of the UP mortars using crushed waste glass. The UP mortars are prepare with blast furnace slag fly ash filler. the UP-fine aggregate ratios the crushed waste glass replacements for fine aggregate are tested strengths before and after immersion(H (아래첨자2)SO(아래첨자4) 10%), weight change and acid resistance are also tested. From the test results, the relative strength or UP mortars using fly ash as filler are found to be somewhat superior to that of the UP mortars using blast furnace as filler, And a UP mortar with fly ash as a filler, a UP-fine aggregate ratio of 15% and a waste glass replacement if 50% for fine aggregate is recommended as optimal mix proportion of UP mortar using crushed waste glass. Accordingly, it is enough to assure the use of the crushed waare glass as an aggregate for the production of UP mortar.
