  • High speed rotating airflow inside a HDD chamber causes sub-micron scale disk vibration that could generate significant TMR problems in most of current HDD products. Many publications are presented for the reduction of airflow excitation. One of the most effective methods widely adopted in high-end HDD products is SqueezeAir Bearing Plate (SABP). However, because of its tight assembly clearance between the damper and disk, this method could not be easily implemented in volume production. This article presents a disk damper design that is modified to be feasible for volume production by virtue of a new airflow modeling method.

  • Techniques for stabilising slender bridges under wind loads are presented in this article. A mathematically consistent description of the acting aerodynamic forces is essential when investigating these ideas. Against this background, motion-induced aerodynamic forces are characterised using a linear time-invariant transfer element in terms of rational functions. With the help of these functions, the aeroelastic system can be described in the form of a linear, time-invariant state-space model. It is shown that the divergence wind speed constitutes an upper bound for the application of the selected mechanical actuators. Even active control with full state feedback cannot overcome this limitation. The results are derived and explained with methods of control theory.

  • The use of frequency-dependent spectral element matrix (or exact dynamic stiffness matrix) in structural dynamics is known to provide very accurate solutions, while reducing the number of degrees-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, in the present paper, the spectral element model is formulated for the axially moving Timoshenko beam under a uniform axial tension. The high accuracy of the present spectral element is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, the dispersion relation, and the stability of a moving Timoshenko beam are investigated, analytically and numerically.

  • A new planform of a wing having two sweep angles is proposed to enhance the aeroelastic stability of a swept-forward wing. The double-swept wing has two sweep angles with inboard wing swept-back and outboard wing swept-forward. Aeroelastic analysis is performed with the finite element method to model wing structure and the doublet point method to predict aerodynamic loads. The sweep angle of the inboard wing is varied in this analysis while the outboard wing is swept forward to a pre-selected amount. The results show that the aeroelastic stability can be drastically enhanced by adjusting the sweep angle of the inboard wing. The effect of the fiber orientation in the double-swept composite wing is studied and the proper ply angle is identified to maximize critical speed.

  • Recent development of high speed computers and use of optimization techniques have given a big momentum of turbomachinery design replacing expensive experimental cost as well as trial and error approaches. The surrogate based optimization techniques being used for aerodynamic turbomachinery designs coupled with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations analysis involve single- and multi-objective optimization methods. The objectives commonly tried to improve were adiabatic efficiency, pressure ratio, weight etc. Presently coupling the fluid flow and structural analysis is being tried to find better design in terms of weight, flutter and vibration, and turbine life. The present article reviews the surrogate based optimization techniques used recently in turbomachinery shape optimizations.

  • This paper presents an aeroelastic analysis procedure to highlight the influence of wind velocity on the structural damping and frequency of a long span cable-stayed bridge. Frequency dependent self-excited forces in terms of flutter derivatives are expressed as continuous functions using rational function approximation technique. The aeroelastically modified structural equation of motion is expressed in terms of frequency independent modal state-space parameters. The modal logarithmic dampings and frequencies corresponding to a particular wind speed are then determined from the eigen solution of the state matrix.

  • According to research currently developed by several authors (including the present ones) a multimode approach to the aeroelastic instability can be appropriate for suspension bridges with very long span and so with close natural frequencies. Extending that research, this paper deals in particular with: i) the role of along-wind modes, underlined also by means of the flutter mode representation; ii) the effects of a variation of the mean wind speed along the span. A characterisation of the response in the time domain by means of an energetic approach is also discussed.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

  • The pound net fishery is very important one in Korean coastal fishery and it need to grasp the characteristics of the net affected by many factors. It is considered that the structure and the shape of the pound net can be changed by the direction and speed of current, wave height, depth and conditions of sea bed. However, most of all, the speed of current and wave height influence more upon the pound net than any other factors to deform and flutter. In this study, author carried out the experiments with a model of double one-side pound net made by the similarity law as 1:100 scales at a real experimental area, and additionally the model net experiments were conducted in the circulating water channel in Pukyong National University. The author analyzed the data of transformation of shape and tension of the model pound net to recognize the characteristics of the current and wave acting on it. Regardless of the direction of flow affecting on the fish court net or bag net, the deformed angle and depth to the side panel and bottom of box nets becomes bigger as the wave gets higher and the period of wave is faster. The tension in both upward or downward tends to be changed by the speed of wave. Those value of changes occurred similarly in either fish court net or bag net. Generally, when bag net is located at upward of flow, the value of tension was bigger 10% than any other location or nets. Regardless of the setting direction, the tension of the pound net is increased in proportion to flow speed, wave height and period of wave, and it becomes bigger about 15-30% at upward to flow than downward. Where the flow is upward in the court net, the tension in the wave increased to 37% compared to the one in the flow only in the condition of flow of 0.1-0.3m/s. Where the flow is upward in the bag net, the tension in the wave increased to 52% in the flow of 0.1m/s, and the tension increased to 48% in the flow of 0.2-0.3m/s.
