  • This paper presents the PDMS surface characteristic change after the plasma process and the electroosmotic flow control technique for the two-dimensional focusing in the micro channels made of PDMS and glass. The channels are fabricated by plastic molding and micromachining technique. To observe the surface characteristic change as time elapses, we measure the contact angle of water on the surface and the velocity of the electroosmotic flow in a channel. The electric field adequate for focusing of a core flow in a confluence channel is obtained by the experiment. The computer simulation is performed to obtain the width and the depth of the core flow for several junction angles of the confluence channel.

  • This study has investigated numerically and experimentally the flow characteristic of air-cooling fan for transmission oil cooler in the large-size diesel engine. Impellers of cooler were composed of eight normal-scale and eight small-scale blades in the zig-zag pattern. In order to increase the discharge pressure of cooling fan, turbo type of fan blade is proposed in the impeller for transmission oil cooler. The fluidic performance of cooling fan has been estimated numerically by using the commercial code and experimentally carried out with reference on AMCA Standard 210-99. As a result, it is confirmed that the numerical result for performance curve is in good agreement with experimental data.

  • In this review paper, concepts in optofluidics are applied to an advanced manufacturing technology based on self-assembled microparts. The "optical" aspect of optofluidics will be described in the context of photolithography, and the "fluidic" aspect will be discussed in the context of self-assembly. First, optofluidic maskless lithography will be introduced as a dynamic fabrication method to generate microparticles in microfluidic channels. Next, the history and application of optofluidic lithography will be presented.

  • SU-8 can be implemented as a mask for micro Abrasive Jet Machining (micro-AJM) process [1]. In this paper, we will evaluate the quality of micro grooving result on glass substrate by micro-AJM process which using SU-8 as a mask. It was evaluated on width and edge profile of the micro grooving. The result was having distortion compare with the master film used to pattern the SU-8 mask. The value of distortion with other properties which came along with it, such as depth and surface roughness, can be optimized in order to fabricate micro-channel for micro-fluidic application.

  • A mathematical model is suggested for diagnosis on a reciprocating pump. To the end, kinematic, thermodynamic and fluidic analyses are carried out for a simplified reciprocating pump model. The pressure inside the cylinder is expressed as a function of the rotation angle of a crank axle. The mathematical model consists of one cylinder with suction and discharge valves and an accumulator. The effect of valve leakage on the discharge angle is investigated. The discharge angle difference between normal state and leakage state increases with the leakage extent.

  • Recently, the next-generation advanced flow visualization techniques such as holographic PIV, aynni.c PIV, echo-PIV, micro/nano-PIV, and X-ray PIV have been introduced. These advanced mea-surement techniques have a big potential as the core technology for analyzing outmost thermo-fluid flows in future. They would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics. steel, and information engineering, but also in the research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy technology etc. Especially, NT (Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is impossible for conventional measurement methods to observe the nano- and bio-fluidic flow phenomena. In this article, the basic principle of these high-tech flow visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as blood flows in a micro-tube, in vivo analysis of micro-circulation, and flow around a living body are introduced as a blue ocean strategy.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and characteristics of a buckling microvalve using a MCA (multilayer ceramic actuator). The mechanical and fluidic analysis are done by finite element method. The designed structure is normally closed microvalve using buckling effect, which is consist of three separate structures; a valve seat die, an actuator die and a small piezoelectric actuator. The flow rate of the fabricated MCA valve was 0-8.13 ml/min at the applied pressure of 0-50 kPa. Maximum non-linearity was 2.24 % FS at a duty cycle of 50 %. The maximum pressure was 230 kPa and the leak rate was $3.03{\times}10^{-8}\;Pa{\cdot}m^{3}/cm^{2}$ at a supply voltage of 100 V.

  • This paper describes a new constructing method of multifunctional biosensor using many kinds of biomaterials. A metal particle and an array was fabricated by photolithographic. Biomaterials were immobilized on the metal particle. The array and the particles were mixed in a buffer solution, and were arranged by magnetic force interaction and random fluidic self-assembly. A quarter of total Ni dots were covered by the particles. The binding direction of the particles was controllable, and condition of particles was almost with Au surface on top. The particles were successfully arranged on the array. The biomaterial activities were detected by chemiluminescence and electrochemical methods.

  • A microfabricated electrochemical cell comprising PDMS-based microchannel and in-channel gold microelectrodes was fabricated as a sensitive and a miniature alternative to the conventional electroanalytical systems. A reproducible fabrication procedure enabled patterning of multiple microelectrodes integrated within a PDMS-based fluidic network. The active area of each electrode was $200{\mu}m{\times}200{\mu}m$ with a gap of $200{\mu}m$ between the electrodes which resulted in a higher signal to noise ratio. Also, the PDMS layer served the purpose of shielding the electrical interferences to the measurements. Analytes such as potassium ferrocyanide; amino acid: cysteine and nucleoside: guanosine were characterized using the fabricated cell. The microchip was comparable to bulk electrochemical systems and its applicability was also demonstrated with flow injection based rapid amperometric detection of DNA samples. The device so developed shall find use as a disposable electrochemical cell for rapid and sensitive analysis of electroactive species in various industrial and research applications.

  • An analysis on pressure drop in vortex amplifier has been performed. Based on theoretical approach with flow physics on well-known firm ground from previous studies, two dimensional flow model, which is very useful to calculate pressure drop of vortex amplifier, is proposed. Parametric studies on inlet and outlet boundary conditions also have been performed so that it found the most influential parameter is the inlet swirl velocity condition. Finally, a simple formulation is given to calculate total pressure drop.
