The effectiveness of fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) on dynamic response mitigation of coupled two adjacent structures was investigated, considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects under earthquake excitation. A numerical procedure was employed to evaluate system response. The finite elements were used for the numerical treatment of the adjacent buildings and soil region. Viscous boundary conditions were used as special non-reflecting boundaries on the edges of finite soil region. According to the results, the FVDs were found to be very effective for dynamic response mitigation of the adjacent buildings, even if considering the soil medium. The results showed that the most affecting parameter on the system response was found to be soil type. It was also concluded that when adjacent structures coupled by FVDs, the maximum values of the roof displacements, the base shear forces, and the base bending moments could decrease up to around 50%. Changing in lateral stiffness of the one building has minor effects on the effectiveness of viscous dampers.

Recently, there has been an active study about smart fluid to control the vibration, in which MR fluid is evaluated as most efficient because it can generate different bonding forces based on the intensity of the external magnetic fields. This paper attempts to find a mechanism that, under limited conditions during a clutch production that uses such dynamic characteristic, defects the maximum intensity of electromagnetism. Using the finite element analysis program, we predicted a change within the bonding force of the MR fluid occurring inside the clutch when it is subjected to an increased electric current. In addition, we analyzed the change in the magnetic intensity when the coil comprising the coil control center is switched to multiple lines from the standard single line, to find a mechanism that can maximize the effect. Based on this analysis, we developed the clutch and tested its function, hoping to widen future MR fluid's range of application.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate an analytical approach for opening performance evaluation of the nuclear pressure safety valve based on standard codes such as ASME or KEPIC. It is well-known that safety valve is considered as one of pressure relief valves for protecting a boiler or pressure vessel from exceeding the maximum allowable working pressure. When pressure in a container reaches its set pressure, the safety valve commences discharging the internal fluid by a sudden opening called as popping. Safety valve is usually evaluated by set pressure, full open, blow-down, leakage and flow capacity. The test procedure and technical requirement for performance evaluation is described in international code of ASME code such as BPVC. The opening characteristics of steam safety valve can be analyzed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and steam shaft dynamics. First, the flow analysis along opening process is simulated by running the CFD models of the ten types of opening steps from 0 to 100%. As a analysis result, the various CFD outputs of flow pattern, pressure, forces on the disc and mass flow at each simulation step is demonstrated. The lift force is calculated by using the forces applied on disc from static pressure and secondary flow. And, the effect of huddle chamber or control chamber is studied by dynamic analysis based on CFD simulation results such as lift force. As a result, dynamics analysis shows opening features according to the sizes of control chamber.
The dynamic responses and drift forces in waves of a floating circular fish cage are analyzed considering hydroelastic effects. The method of generalized mode is used to calculate the hydroelastic responses of the floater of cage. The elastic mode shapes, generalized mass, and stiffness in dry mode are evaluated by using a structural analysis code. The higher-order boundary element method is adopted to analyze the interaction between fluid and deformable structure. Some results of vertical motions and drift forces are shown and compared with those for a rigid body.
Two-dimensional formulations for wind forces on elongated bodies, such as bridge decks, are reviewed and links with expressions found in two-dimensional airfoil theory are pointed out. The present research focus on indicial lift responses and admittance functions which are commonly used to improve buffeting analysis of bluff bodies. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis is used to derive these aerodynamic functions for various sections. The numerical procedure is presented and results are discussed which demonstrate that the particular shapes of these functions are strongly dependent on the evolution of the separated flows around the sections at the early stages.

Lineal and angular movements of many engine components make the lubricant absorb air and the aerated lubricant greatly influences the clearance performance of contacting behaviors of engine components such as big-end bearing, cam and tappet, etc. This study investigates the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and proceeding which is one of the most frictional energy consuming components in the engine. Our assumption for the analysis of aerated lubricant film is that the film formation is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant by absorbing the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. In our investigation, it is found that these two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Frictional forces are also influenced by the aerated bubble size and density, which eventually enlarge the shear resistance due the surface tension, Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio under the dynamic loading condition. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, proceeding locus is computed with Mobility method at each time step.
An analysis of the dynamics in the closing phase of the occluder of a mechanical monoleaflet heart valve prosthesis is presented. The dynamic analysis of the fluid in the vicinity of the occluder was based on the control vo]use approach. The backflow velocity of the fluid was computed by applying the continuity, Bernoulli's and momentum equations in the unsteady state. By considering the fluid pressure and gravity as external forces acting on the occluder, the moment equilibrium on fine occluder was employed to analyze the motion of the occluder during closing and the force of impact between the occluder and the guiding struts. Occluder comes to rest after several oscillations in about 10-18 msec after the Inltiaton of closing. As the aortic pressure increases, the occludes closes faster and comes to the final resting position earlier and the impact force increases also. But backflow is not af footed by the variation of the aortic pressure. With decreasing time delay of the ventricle pressure, the occluder closes faster and impact force Increases. The computed magnitudes of the occluder tiP velocities as well as the backflow of the fluid during the closing phase using this model were in agreement with previously reported experimental measurements.
In this work the effect of pressure drop at inner film due to centrifugal forces acting on the lubricating fluid is investigated for static and dynamic characteristics of floating ring journal bearing. The momentum effect of oil supply into a inner film through oil feeding holes of floating ring on the bearing performance is also studied. It is compared the pressure drop effects and the momentum effect of oil supply into a inner film fur all bearing performance parameters. It is shown that some performance of floating ring bearings can be controled by the momentum of oil supply into a inner film.

This paper presents an experimental study on deformations and force characteristics of flexible plates both in air and water. The focus is on the complicated interaction problem between the fluid and flexible structures. The displacements and forces of free oscillating plates are measured and compared with each others. The effects of several plate coefficients are investigated i.e. plate thickness, aspect ratio, plate area, plate width ratio, bending angle. For the verification of the experimental results, some of them are compared with numerical simulation and show reasonable agreements.

Because strong wind is one of the few forces that, although considered in container crane design, still cause significant damage, a container crane was tested to investigate wind load characteristic in uniform flows. So, this study measured an external point pressure at the each members of a container crane according to a wind direction and a shape of members in a wind-tunnel test. The result of this test was compared to those of computation fluid dynamics using a CFX 10. The scale of a container crane model for wind tunnel test applied similarity scales to consider the size of the wind tunnel test section and the boundary condition for CFD is like wind tunnel test.
