  • This paper proposes a novel type of tactile device utilizing magnetorheological (MR) fluid which can be applicable for haptic master of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) robotic system. The salient feature of the controllability of rheological properties by the intensity of the magnetic field (or current) makes this potential candidate of the tactile device. As a first step, an appropriate size of the tactile device is designed and manufactured via magnetic analysis. Secondly, in order to determine proper input magnetic field the repulsive forces of the real body parts such as hand and neck are measured. Subsequently, the repulsive forces of the tactile device are measured by dividing 5 areas. The final step of this work is to obtain desired force in real implementation. Thus, in order to demonstrate this goal a neuro-fuzzy logic is applied to get the desired repulsive force and the error between the desired and actual force is evaluated.

  • The waterhammer has recently become more important because the pumping stations were big and the systems conveying the fluid through the large and long transmission pipelines were complex. When the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity As the pressure waves are propagating between the pumping station and the distributing reservoir, the pressure inside the pipe drops to the liquid vapor pressure with the pipeline profile, at which time a vapor cavity forms, and finally the column separation occurs. If the pressure in the pipe is less than the atmospheric pressure, the pipe can be collapsed and destroyed after the water columns separated by the vapor cavity rejoin. During the reverse flow, the pressure is so abnormally increased at the pumping station that the accident of flooding may happen due to the failure of system. In this paper, the field tests on the waterhammer by the startup, stoppage, and power failure of a centrifugal pump were carried out for Yongma transmission pumping station in Seoul. The experimental results were compared with that of the numerical calculations, in which results the procedure of controlled pump normal shut-down and the two-step closing mode of controlling the ball valve for pump emergency stop are proposed to reduce the pressure surge.

  • It is important to uniformly supply the fuel gas into the reaction activity area in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Recent studies have shown that the cell performance can be significantly improved by employing metal foam gas distributor as compared with the conventional bipolar plate types. The metal foam gas distributor has been reported to be more efficient to fuel transport. In this study, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed to examine the effects of metal foam flow field design on the fuel supply to the reaction site. Darcy's law is used for the flow in the porous media. By solving additional advection equation for fluid particle trajectory, the gas transport has been visualized and examined for various geometrical configuration of metal foam gas distributor.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow field and discharge valve motion in a rotary compressor. In this study, a transient three-dimensional numerical analysis using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) model has been employed to analyze the interaction between the discharge valve and the refrigerants in the rotary compressor. It has been observed that two peaks have appeared in the displacement of the discharge valve. The maximum displacement of the discharge valve has been found to be located at the second peak. Also, the input pressure of the refrigerants has been compared with the pressures of the muffler passage and the compressor outlet in the rotary compressor. The pressure has decreased along the pathway in the rotary compressor. And the volume flow rates obtained from the current numerical study have been compared with the experiment at data to verify the validity of the present numerical study. This study may supply the fundamental data for the design of rotary compressors.

  • An alternative formulation of the Helmholtz integral equation derived to express the pressure field explicitly in terms of the velocity vector of a radiating surface is used to solve acoustic radiation and fluid/structure interaction problems. This formulation, derived for arbitrary sources, is similar in form to the Rayleigh's formula for planar sources. Because the surface pressure field is expressed explicitly as a surface integral of the surface velocity, which can be implemented numerically using standard Gaussian quadratures, there is no need to use BEM to solve a set of simultaneous equations for the surface pressure at the discretized nodes. Furthermore the non-uniqueness problem inherent in methods based on Helmholtz integral equation is avoided. Validation of this formulation is demonstrated for some simple geometries.

  • This article studies the effects of heat generation/absorption and thermal radiation on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Casson fluid flow past a vertical plate through rotating porous medium with constant temperature and mass diffusion. It is assumed that the plate temperature and concentration level are raised uniformly. For finding the exact solution, a set of non-dimensional partial differential equations is solved analytically using the Laplace transform technique. The influence of various non-dimensional parameters on the velocity are discussed, including the effects of the magnetic parameter M, heat generation/absorption Q, thermal radiation parameter R, Prandtl number Pr, Schmidt number Sc, permeability of porous medium parameter, Casson fluid parameter γ, on velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles, which are discussed through several figures. It is found that velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles in the case of heat generation parameter Q, Casson fluid parameter γ, thermal Grashof number Gr, mass Grashof number Gc, Permeability Porous medium parameter K, and time t have retarding effects. It is also seen that the magnetic field M, Thermal Radiation parameter R, Prandtl field Pr, Schmidt number Sc have reverse effects on it.

  • This paper introduces an analysis method to predicting the flow characteristic of flow field around otter board In order to develope a high performance model. In this experiment, it is used a numerical analysis of flow field through CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic), PIV method in which quantitative, qualitative evaluation is possible. In this experiment, it is used PIV method with flow filed image around otter board in order to analysis of flow characteristic. The result compared flow pattern with analysis result through CFD and also measurement result of lift and drag force coefficient carried out in CWC(Circulating Water Channel). The numerical analysis result is matched well with experiment result of PIV in the research and it is able to verify In the physical aspect. The result is as follows ; (1) It was carried out visibility experiment using laser light sheet, and picture analysis through PIV method in order to analysis fluid field of otter-board. As a result, the tendency of qualitative fluid movement only through the fluid particle's flow could be known. (2) Since PIV analysis result is quantitative, this can be seen in velocity vector distributions, instantaneous streamline contour, and average vorticity distributions through various post processing method. As a result, the change of flow field could be confirmed. (3) At angle of attack 24$^{\circ}$ where It Is shown maximum spreading force coefficient, the analysis result of CFD and PIV had very similar flow pattern. In both case, at the otter-board post edge a little boundary layer separation was seen, but, generally they had a good flow (4) As the result of post processing with velocity vector distributions, instantaneous streamline contour and average vorticity distributions by PIV, boundary layer separation phenomenon started to happen from angle of attack 24$^{\circ}$, and from over angle of attack 28$^{\circ}$, it happen at leading edge side with the width enlarged.

  • This paper presents field-dependent dynamic characteristics of a shock damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) damper. A cylindrical type of the shock damper is designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model. The damping force is then measured with respect to the piston velocity at various electric fields. The measured damping force is incorporated with the 1DOF shock system to analyze the shock isolation performance.
