When a liquid cargo tank is partially filled with fluid, internal impact loads can be occurred from the vessel's motions. In this study, liquid sloshing problems with a thin top layer of particles with a lighter density than water and the coupling effects of the liquid-sloshing/vessel-motion were investigated in order to reduce the sloshing-induced impact loads. The PNU-MPS (Pusan-National-University-modified Moving Particle Simulation) method for solving the liquid motion inside a tank and the CHARM3D BEM (Boundary Element Method) based time-domain ship motion analysis program for vessel-motion simulation were coupled. From the simulation results, we could see that the floaters seemed to be quite effective at reducing the sloshing impact loads in the case of tank-only sloshing problems, but not as much for the coupling problem with vessel motion.
In the field of fluid dynamics, the sloshing effects are most common and significant problem. It is usually appeared in the tank filled with fluid which is on the main structure, thus, sloshing effects and its impact load may affect to entire system. For the sloshing effects analysis, impact loads due to tank motion is generally investigated theocratically, experimentally and numerically. The difficulty of sloshing phenomenon is non-linearity induced by large deformation at the free-surface. In this regard, it is well known issue that the repeatability on the sloshing problems is very low. In this study, moving particle semi-implicit method was employed to simulate sloshing problem and then the results were compared with corresponding experiments captured by high accuracy high speed camera. The results from numerical simulation was compared to experimental results.

In a cryogenic storage structure, the insulation system is in an environment in which fluid impact loads occur throughout the lifetime of the structure. In this study, we investigated the effect of repetitive impact loading on the mechanical performance of glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam. The repeated impact loading test was conducted in accordance with the required impact energy and the required number of repetitive impacts. The impact behavior of glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam was analyzed in terms of stress and displacement. After the impact test, the specimen was subjected to a compression test to evaluate its mechanical performance. We analyzed the critical impact energy that affected mechanical performance. For the impact conditions that were tested, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the polyurethane foam can be degraded significantly.

Sloshing of LNG cargo can cause high impact loads on the supporting and containing structures. This is particularly critical for membrane-type tanks since these will have flat surfaces and corner regions which can lead to increased peak pressures for sloshing impacts. The membrane-type containment system is much more flexible compared to the steel hull structure. As a result, fluid-structure interaction plays an important role in the structural analysis of the containment system under sloshing load. This study is based on the direct calculation method of applying sloshing loads to the KC-1 basic insulation system using finite element analysis. The structural analysis of KC-1 basic insulation system considers the dashpot as fluid-structure interaction between liquid cargo and the LNG containment system. The maximum stress of the polyurethane form for KC-1 insulation system is 1.5 times lower than one without dashpot.
Recently, some fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems involving the fluid impact loads interacting with structures, such as sloshing, slamming, green-water, etc., have been considered, especially in the ocean engineering field. The governing equations for both an elastic solid model and flow model were originally derived from similar continuum mechanics principles. In this study, an elastic model based on a particle method, the MPS method, was developed for simulating the FSI problems. The developed model was first applied to a simple cantilever deflection problem for verification. Then, the model was coupled with the fluid flow model, the PNU (Pusan National University modified)-MPS method, and applied to the numerical investigation of the coupling effects between a cantilever and a mass of water, which has variable density, free-falling to the end of the cantilever.

To ensure structural integrity of membrane type LNG tank, the rational assessment of the sloshing impact responses of tank structures should be preceded. The sloshing impact pressures acting on the insulation system of LNG tank are typical irregular loads and the resulting structural responses show very complex behaviors accompanied with fluid structure interaction. So it is not easy to estimate them accurately and immense time consuming calculation process would be necessary. In this research, a simplified method to analyse the dynamic structural responses of LNG tank insulation system under pressure time histories obtained by sloshing model test or numerical analysis was studied. The proposed technique based on the concept of linear combination of the triangular response functions which are the transient responses of structures under the unit triangular impact pressure acting on structures. The validity of suggested method was verified through the example calculations and applied to the dynamic structural response analysis of a real Mark III membrane type insulation system using the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model test.

The unsteady problem of a rigid body impact onto a floating plate is studied. Both the plate and the water are at rest before impact. The plate motion is caused by the impact force transmitted to the plate through an elastic layer with viscous damping on the top of the plate. The hydrodynamic force is calculated by using the second-order model of plate impact by Iafrati and Korobkin (2011). The present study is concerned with the deceleration experienced by a rigid body during its collision with a floating object. The problem is studied also by a fully-nonlinear computational-fluid-dynamics method. The elastic layer is treated with a moving body-fitted grid, the impacting body with an immersed boundary method, and a discrete-element method is used for the contact-force model. The presence of the elastic layer between the impacting bod- ies may lead to multiple bouncing of them, if the bodies are relatively light, before their interaction is settled and they continue to penetrate together into the water. The present study is motivated by ship slamming in icy waters, and by the effect of ice conditions on conventional free-fall lifeboats.

In SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method, the fluid has been assumed that it is weakly compressible to solve the basic equations composed of Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation. That leads to some drawbacks such as non-physical pressure fluctuations and a restriction as like small time steps in computation. In this study, to improve these problems we assume that the fluid is incompressible and the velocity-pressure coupling problem is solved by a projection method(that is, by ISPH method). The two-dimensional computation results of dam breaking and gravitational wave generation are respectively compared with the results of finite volume method and analytical method to confirm the accuracy of the present numerical computation technique. And, the agreements are comparatively acceptable. Subsequently, the green water simulations of a two-dimensional fixed barge are carried out to inspect the possibility of practical application to ship hydrodynamics, those correspond to one of the violent free surface motions with impact loads. The agreement between the experimental data and the present computational results is also comparatively good.

During certification of freefall lifeboats, it is necessary to estimate the injury potential of the impact loads exerted on the occupants during water entry. This paper focused on the numerical simulation to predict the acceleration response during the impact of freefall lifeboats on the water using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code. FSI problems could be conveniently simulated by the overlapping capability using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian(ALE) formulation and Euler-Lagrange coupling algorithm of LS-DYNA code. Through this study, it could be found that simulation results were in relatively good agreement with experimental ones in the acceleration peak values, and that the loading conditions were very sensitive to the acceleration responses by the experimental and simulation results.

This study aims at investigating the effect of the baffle height on the liquid sloshing in the three-dimensional (3D) rectangular tank. In order to simulate the 3D incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the 3D tank with partially filled liquid, the present study has adopted the volume of fluid (VOF) method based on the finite-volume method which has been well verified by comparing with the results of the relevant previous researches. The ratio of the baffle height ($h_B$) to filling level (h) has been changed in the range of $0{\leq}h_B/h{\leq}1.2$ to observe the effect on the impact loads on the side wall and free surface behavior. Generally, as baffle height increases, the impact pressure on the wall decreases and the deformation of free surface becomes weaker. However it seemed that a critical ratio of the baffle height existed to reveal the lowest impact pressure on the wall. Consequently, $h_B/h=0.8$ among $h_B/hs$ considered in the study showed the lowest impact pressure.
