The paper describes an approach for measuring flow ripple generated by oil hydraulic axial piston pumps. Flow ripple has periodic waveforms due to the cyclic nature of a pump's operation, and interacts with the connected hydraulic systems such as pipes and components to produce a pressure ripple, also known as fluid-borne noise. It is indispensable to measure a flow ripple because increasing of vibration and noise caused by a flow ripple has become a point to be considered and has need of solving these problems. The measurement of flow ripple with high frequencies from oil hydraulic axial piston pumps is msde by using the remote instantaneous flow rate measurement method. As a result, the reverse flow through the relief groove in valve plate has an important effect upon a flow ripple generated by a pumps.
The major parameters governing the fluid dynamical and thermo-dynamical behavior in the large pipeline network system are friction loss and the pipeline length. But in local pipeline networks and relatively short distance pipeline system, secondary loss and the considerations of the moving states of the fluid machine are also important. One of the major element in local pressure control system is pressure regulator. It causes the variations of the physical properties in that pipeline system. When it is under working, the accurate analysis of the flow properties is so difficult. In this study, some numerical approaches to investigate the critical-flow-characteristics of the pressure regulator have been done according to the variations of the opening ratio or cross-sectional area and the detail examinations and considerations of the pressure regulator as a pipeline network elements have been carried. Finally the flow-flied distributions and critical-flow-characteristics have been presented in detail and the critical flow phenomena and the relation to the opening ratio or cross-sectional-area ratio have been studied.
This paper deals with the flow characteristics of a reed valve analyzed using computational dynamics(CFD) for optimal design. The seat sizes of the valve are modeled asØ6[mm] and Ø8[mm] to compare the flow characteristics. The inlet boundary condition is entered at 10[kPa], 15[kPa], 20[kPa], and 30[kPa] and the outlet boundary condition is set to the atmospheric pressure. The flow coefficient(C) and pressure loss coefficient(K) are calculated from the results of flow analysis. From the analysis results, it was confirmed that the flow coefficient of a reed valve having a seat size of Ø6[mm] is greater than that having a seat size of Ø8[mm], and the coefficient of pressure loss of a valve with a seat size of Ø6[mm] is lower than the Ø8[mm] size valve.

Ejector is a simple device which can transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. The efficiency of the ejector system is relatively very low, compared to other fluid transport devices driven mainly by the forces acting on the normal direction. However, its major advantage is a simple structure with no moving parts, and it transports a large amount of fluid with a small driving energy. In this study, the performance of side-type liquid ejector commonly used in ships; is analyzed by using experimental and CFD methods under steady and incompressible flow condition by varying the length of the throat and diffuser, the flow pattern and suction phenomenon were studied in detail.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

Experimental investigation on the performance of dual-evaporator refrigeration system with an ejector has been carried out. In this study, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant R134a is chosen as a working fluid. The condenser and two-evaporators are made as concentric double pipes with counter-flow type heat exchangers. Experiments were performed by changing the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids entering condenser, high-pressure evaporator and low-pressure evaporator at test conditions keeping a constant compressor speed. When the external conditions (inlet temperatures of secondary fluid entering condenser and one evaporator) are fixed, results show that coefficient of performance (COP) increases as the inlet temperature of the other evaporator rises. It is also shown that the COP decreases as the mass flaw rate ratio of suction fluid to motive fluid increases. The COP of dual-evaporator refrigeration system with an ejector is superior to that of a single-evaporator vapor compression system by 3 to 6%.

A fan-motor assembly in a vacuum cleaner is analyzed through system-level analysis method. This system consisted of three components, a fan, motor, and the flow resistance of the motor, or of the vacuum cleaner. System-level analysis method is characterized by the combination of torque matching at a constant throttling condition between the fan and the motor and the pressure drop at a constant flow rate due to the flow resistance of the motor, or of the vacuum cleaner. The performance characteristics of the fan-motor assembly and the vacuum cleaner system could be predicted over the whole range of operation, based on the characteristics of each component. The predicted performance of the vacuum cleaner system through system-level analysis agreed well with the experimental results within 4.5% difference of pressure and 6% difference of the efficiency. The effect of flow resistance of a motor is investigated and it is found that the efficiency decrease of fan-motor assembly at the constant flow rate due to the flow resistance of a motor is determined by the flow resistance ratio(FRR), which is defined as a ratio of flow resistance of motor and the flow resistance of a constant throttling condition of a given point. The fan-motor assembly(S2 model) was modified to reduce the FRR from 9.0% to 2.4% and the experimental result shows that the efficiency of S2 model was improved by about 3% at best efficiency point.

The present study is devoted to the influence of a superposed radial inflow in a rotor-stator cavity with a peripheral opening. The flow regime is turbulent, the two boundary layers being separated by a core region. An original theoretical solution is obtained for the core region, explaining the reason why a weak radial inflow has no major influence near the periphery of the cavity but strongly affects the flow behavior near the axis. The validity of the theory is tested with the help of a new set of experimental data including the radial and tangential mean velocity components, as well as three components of the Reynolds stress tensor measured by hot-wire anemometry. The theoretical results are also in good agreement with numerical results obtained with the Fluent code and experimental data from the literature.
In this paper, the problem of transonic aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil is numerically investigated in the inviscid gas-droplet two-phase flow with the compressible two-fluid model. In the present study, the airfoil flight in the cloud is simulated by taking account of the viscous drag of the droplets, the heat transfer, the phase change, and the droplet fragmentation The two-fluid equation system is solved by the fractional-step method and the WAF-HIL scheme. The effects of size and volume fraction of the droplets on the flow characteristics of the airfoil in the cloud are elaborated and discussed.

The drag reduction is the phenomenon that occurs only when the shear stress from the wall of pipe is beyond the critical point. The drag reduction increase as the molecular weight, concentration of the polymer and Reynolds number increase, but it is limited by Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. Because of the strong shear force for the polymer on the turbulent flow, the molecular weight and the drag reduction do not decrease. Such mechanical degradation of the polymer occurs in all polymer solvent systems. This paper is to identify and develop high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag reduction. In addition, drag reduction in vertical flow by measuring the pressure drop and local void fraction on vertical-up flow of close system is evaluated.
