HEAT PIPE TYPE EXHAUST HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEM FOR HOT AIR HEATER

  • Area of greenhouse increases rapidly up to 45,265ha by the year of 1998 in Korea. Hot air heater with light oil combustion is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season. However, exhaust gas heat discharged to atmosphere through chimney reaches up to 10~20% of total heat of the oil combusted in the furnace. In order to recapture the heat of this exhaust gas and to recycle for greenhouse heating, the heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system was manufactured and tested in this experiment. The exhaust heat recovery system was made for space heating in the greenhouse. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of heat pipes, ${\emptyset}15.88{\times}600mm$ located in the rectangular box of $600{\times}550{\times}330mm$, a blower and air ducts. The rectangular box was divided by two compartments where hot chamber exposed to exhaust gas in which heat pipes could pick up the heat of exhaust gas, and by evaporation of the heat transfer medium in the pipes it carries the heat to the cold compartment, then the blower moves the heat to greenhouse. The number of heat pipe was 60, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and heat transfer capacity of heat pipe. The working fluid of heat pipe was acetone because acetone is known for its excellent heat transfer capacity. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. According to the performance test it could recover 53,809 to 74,613kJ/hr depending on the inlet air temperature of 12 to $-12^{circ}C$ respectively when air flow rate $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. The exhaust gas temperature left the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{circ}C$ from $270^{circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the air and the flue gas, the temperature difference was collected by the air and the warm air temperature was about $60^{circ}C$ at the air flow rate of $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. This heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system can reduce fuel cost by 10% annually according to the economic analysis.

  • SCR(selective catalytic reduction) pilot plant for reduction of the nitrogen oxides using diesel oil as a reductant was installed at the NG(natural gas) fired combined cycle and the activity of Pt(0.3%)/Zeolite catalyst was studied in real flue gas condition according to the amount of reductant. reaction temperature and space velocity. NOx conversion gradually increased with increasing the diesel oil concentration up to C/N ratio 5.5(C/N ratio: the ratio of the number of carbon atom to the number of NOx molecules included in the flue gas). Increasing the reaction temperature. NOx conversion increased and reached a maximum conversion of 50% at $190^{\circ}C$. NOx conversion did not changed with increasing the space velocity up to 18,500/hr and then gradually decreased. These results reveal the potential for diesel oil as a reductant for de-NOx SCR process.

  • Air heater used in power plant helps increase the thermal efficiency of the boiler by recovering the heat from the boiler flue gas and thus preventing the loss of useful heat. This study investigates the effect of preventive maintenance on the performance of the air heater in a power plant. Performance indexes for the air heater are calculated to observe the changes in the performance and operation status of the air heater before and after preventive maintenance. The major performance indexes considered are temperature efficiency of the flue gas side, air leakage rate, heat recovery rate, heat transmission rate, and heat capacity ratio. The performance of the air heater is evaluated before and after preventive maintenance; our results show that all the abovementioned performance indexes are improved after the maintenance.

  • A mathematical model has been developed for simulating the spray dryer absorber (SDA) used in semi-dry flue gas desulfurization process. Fundamental equations include the component mass and heat balances in both gas and droplet phases and the equation of motion for a single droplet. The model developed described the pilot-plant data much better than the existing SPRAYMOD-M model. The effect of the process variables, whose values were chosen within the operation limits of the actual pilot plants, on % $SO_2$ removal or conversion of the sorbent were calculated, and discussed in terms of $SO_2$ absorption rate, the residence time of flue gas, the velocity and drying time of droplets. Finally, the % $SO_2$ removal was calculated with two independent process variables and the results were shown on three-dimensional or two-dimensional diagrams with the lines of constant % $SO_2$ removal, so that they can be easily applied to preliminary design of the SDA.

  • Experimental investigations on the effect of two kinds of additives ; aqueous NaOH solution and ammonia(NH$_3$) for removal of NOx and SO$_2$ simultaneously by corona discharge were carried out. The simulated combustion flue gas was[NO(0.02[%])-SO$_2$(0.08[%])-$CO_2$-Air-$N_2$] Volume percentage of aqueous NaOH solution used was 20[%] and $N_2$flow rate was 2.5[$\ell$/min] for bubbling aqueous NaOH solution Ammonia gas(14.81[%]) balanced by argon was diluted by air. NH$_3$ molecular ratios(MR) based on [NH$_3$] and [NO+SO$_2$] were 1, 1.5 and 2.5 The vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$was introduced to the main simulated combustion flue gas duct through injection systems which were located at downstream of corona discharge reactor. NOx(NO+NO$_2$) removal rate by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution was much better than that by injecting NH$_3$however SO$_2$removal rate by injecting NH$_3$was much better than that by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH SO$_2$removal rate slightly increased with increasing applied voltage. When the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$were simultaneously injection NOx and SO$_2$ removal rate were significantly increased.

  • Mercury oxidation in an SCR(selective catalytic reduction) catalyst was tested in this study with the conditions simulating the SCR system in full-scale coal-fired flue gas. A commercially available SCR catalyst was located in a temperature-controlled reactor system, and simulated gas was injected into the reactor. Mercury oxidation efficiency was determined from the difference between inlet and outlet elemental mercury concentrations. A control experiment was carried out with the gas composition of 12% $CO_{2}$, 5% $H_{2}O$, 5% $O_{2}$, 500 ppm $SO_{2}$, 400 ppm NO, 400 ppm $NH_{3}$, 5 ppm HCl, and 20 ${\mu}g/m^{3}$ Hg. Additional tests were conducted with different gas composition from the control condition to investigate the effect of gas composition on mercury oxidation in the SCR catalyst.

  • The effect of spray characteristics on desulfurization yield was evaluated by performing experiments with pilot spray drying sorber (SDS). Among the variables of operating conditions, the slurry-spraying conditions were chosen as major parameters; Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of slurry droplet were varied for the different gas temperatures and $SO_{2}$ concentrations in the inlet gas flow. From the experimental results, we proposed semi-empirical models of desulfurization yield for both Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of droplets. The optimal condition of spray can be determined based on these results, which might be applied to the design or scale-up of SDS systems.

  • In order to investigate the reduction of NO emissions, natural gas was fueled for two-stage combustion apparatus. NO and CO emissions were described by five variables: total air ratio, primary air ratio, secondary air injection position, secondary air injection velocity, and swirl ratio. It was mainly observed that, as the primary air ratios of 0 and 0.4 NO emission decreased with increasing the secondary air injection position and secondary air injection velocity. The effect of weak swirl on NO emission was found to be insignificant.

  • The organic linings at flue gas desulfurization systems (FGD system) in power plant have the excellent chemical properties but, lose the anticorrosive properties according to the aging with environment conditions. The properties of the organic linings depend on the manufacturing company. Therefore, the basic properties of organic linings for the preestimate of life time should be examined by conducting the aging and the bond strength test according to temperature. The pre-aging samples were compared with the post-aging samples. The temperature conditions of the aging process were 70, 150 and $200^{\circ}C$. The bond strength was calculated and the cross sections of fracture surface were examined by optical microscope and SEM. The $T_g$ was examined by DSC, DTA and TGA.

  • This paper addresses the analysis of the combustion characteristics in the oil burner using swirl flow. The reduction of exhaust emissions and high efficiency combustion techniques of the industrial burner have been studied to conserve environmental resources. We make swirl burner equal to dimension of wide burner and it is turn round of the combustion gas in construction. For a vigorous inner flow possessde 3m/s velocity in combustion gas of two burners. In calculation, we make use of a densely mesh to detailed analysis. In this study, the effect of swirl flow on the combustion of a commercial burner is analysed by experimental and also simulative manner. The results show the swirl burner has 40% better efficiency and less emissions of CO, HC, NOx and Smoke.
