Amino Acid Composition of Flue-cured Leaf Tobacco before and after the Aging (황색종 잎담배의 숙성에 따른 아미노산의 조성)

  • The amino acid content and constitution of domestic flue-cured tobacco before and after the aging were investigated. The major amino acids of domestic flue -cured tobacco were histidine, serine, aspartic acid and proline and leucine, isoleucine and glycine were minority in them. Phenylalanine was the most changeable components through the aging. While the contents of tryptophan, sering and Proline which have herbaceous, harsh and bitter taste and aroma in smoke were reduced, tyrosine which adds smoothing and enhances smoke aroma was increased after the aging. The leaf tobacco aged at 4$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 days had a amino acid composition as good leaf tobacco storaged in natural condition for 2 years.

Effect of Curing Method on Physical Properties of a New Flue-cured Tobacco Variety KF114 (황색종 신품종 KFl14의 건조방법 조절이 잎담배 물리성에 미치는 영향)

  • All steps of the curing process are automatically controlled by preseted program according to stalk positions in flue-cured tobacco. The bulk curing experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of the basic and modified curing program in curing time schedule of two bulk models in physical properties of cured leaves in a new flue-cured tobacco variety KF 114(Wicotiano tabacum L.). The curing process of KF 114 was prolonged in yellowing and quicker in browning stage than those of NC 82. There was no significant difference in physical properties and chromatic characteristics of the cured leaves between basic and modified program at two bulk models. The ratio of normal leaf color tended to increase and the greenish leaf decreased in the modified curing program of two models, but no difference in the brownish leaf ratio was olserved between two programs.

Survey of Disease Occurrence in Major Tobacco Fields of Korea, 2011 (2011년 한국 연초산지의 병해 발생상황)

  • Major diseases of tobacco plants were surveyed throughout the Korea in 2011. Mosaic, bacterial wilt and hallow stalk were most severe during the harvest season on not only flue-cured tobacco plants but also burley tobacco plants. On flue-cured tobacco plants, mosaic caused by potato virus Y were more severe than those by tobacco mosaic virus or cucumber mosaic virus. The mosaic caused by potato virus Y was severe at Yeongwol and Chungju. On burley tobacco plants, mosaic were more severe at Jeongeup and Gochang than those at Chungnam and Jeonnam. A negative correlation between the mosaic incidence and the precipitation was recognized. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between the incidence of hallow stalk incidence of flue-cured tobacco plants in harvesting stage and the precipitation during June was recognized significantly.

  • Tobacco leaves cultivated in Korea, U.S A., Greece and Turkey were analyzed for their essential oils that are solanone, nor- solanadione, damascenone, dana scone and mesa stigmatrienone (4- isomer). Regardless of tobacco varieties and cultivated localities, solanone was the most abundant. Among them particularly, Basma has the highest amounts of the solanone than other varieties. Flue-cured tobacco leaf has much higher amounts of damascellone than burley and aromatic tobacco leaf do. U.S. A. flue-cured, U.S. A. burley and Basma clave much higher concentration of solanone than corresponding Korean varieties, but significant differences could not be observed in other components.   • The contents of Sodium, Magnesium, Iron, nickel , Copper, Maganese and Zinc in Korean tobacco leaves Produced in 1978, were investigated. The contents of each mineral element in tobacco leaves of various varieties were as follows ; Mg was 5370$\mu{g}/g-7640\mu{g}/g$, Burley> Flue -cured >Native. Mn was 210$\mu{g}/g-1290\mu{g}/g$, Burley>Flue -cured>Native. Fe was 330$\mu{g}/g-590\mu{g}/g$, Burley>Flue -cured>Native. Zn was 500$\mu{g}/g$ -100, Native > Burley>Flue-cured. Na, Ni and Cu showed no difference between the types. The contents of Ha, Mg, Mn, Ni and Cu were reduced in the order of Heavy 5, 3, 1 and increased in the order of Light 1, 3, 5 grades. The correlation coefficient (r) between Mg and grade in Hicks, SC 72 and HC 2326 were 0.770-0.981, and significance level was 0.1 % .

Prediction of Sensory Property form Leaf Chemical Property in Flue-cured Tobacco (황색종 잎담배의 화학성분에 의한 관능 특성 예측)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the prediction of sensory property of smoke from leaf chemical property and characterize leaf chemical components for the best tobacco taste's leaves in flue-cured tobacco. For analytical and sensory evaluations, one hundred and forty grades were used. The major leaf chemical components to predict the sensory property of smoke were nicotine for impact, irritation and off taste & odor, and total sugar/nicotine ratio for tobacco taste. Within ${\pm}20%$ range of difference, the predictable probabilities of sensory property of smoke form leaf chemical property were 80.0% for off taste & odor and $91.4{\sim}96.4%$ for impact, irritation and tobacco taste. As a result of K-means cluster analysis on the basis of tobacco taste, the desirable leaf chemical component contents were $2.77{\sim}3.55%$ in nicotine and $5.1{\sim}6.9$ in total sugar/nicotine ratio. This study suggest that the some regression equations may be useful to predict the sensory property of tobacco smoke from a few selected leaf chemical components in flue-cured tobacco and to select the flue-cured tobacco leaves for enhance the tobacco taste of cigarette.

Development of a New Flue - cured Tobacco Variety KFl13 by Nicotiana africana Method (Nicotiana africana 방법에 의한 황색종 연초 신품종 KF113 육성)

  • A new flue - cured tobacco variety KF113 was developed by Nicotiana africana method from a cross of NC82 and Coker 347 at the Suwon Experiment Station. It was tested in the 0fficial Variety Test in 1991-1992 and the flue - cured Regional Farm Test in 1992. KFl13 flowers 4 days later than WC82 (standard variety in Korea) and its harvestable leaves are 2 more than those of NC82. The leaf type and shape of KFl13 resembles Coker 347. It has high resistance to bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum) and black shank (Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae), and is susceptible to tobacco mosaic virus. It should adapt well to the flue - cured production area and can reduce premature flowering under unfavorable weather conditions. Yield of KFl13 is 5% higher than that of NC82, and nearly equal in value per kg compare with NC82. This variety met acceptable standards for chemical and physical characteristics of cured leaf and for smoking taste evaluated by panel members in Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute.

Effect of Locations, Production Year and Leaf Position on Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Tobacco Leaves. (지역, 년도 및 엽분에 따른 잎담배 이화학성 차이)

  • This study was conducted to find out physical and chemical characteristics of burley and flue-cured tobacco leaves followed by location, growing season and leaf position during the period 1985 to 1989. The locations of flue-cured tobacco were 7(65farms) and burley tobacco were 4(40 farms). 1. Flue-cured tobacco leaves The locations of Ch'unch'on and Suwon were higher nicotine and ether extract content, Taegu and Chinju were higher total nitrogen content but Chiniju was lower red color of cured leaves than that of other location. Nicotine content increased but total sugar content decreased during the period 1985 to 1989. Nicotine and total nitrogen content increased but crude ash decreased from lower leaf position to higher leaf position. Total sugar and ether extract content were variable followed by leaf position. 2. Burley tobacco leaves. The location of Ch'onju was higher ether extract content than that of others location, but there was no significant difference the others chemical component among location. Nicotine content and red color of cured leaves increased during the period 1985 to 1989. Nicotine, total nitrogen and ether extract content increased but decreased crude ash content and brightness of cured leaf from lower leaf position to higher leaf position.

Changes of Volatile Compounds in Flue-cured Leaf Tobacco during Aging (황색종 잎담배의 후숙과정 중 정유성분의 변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of essential oils in flue-cured leaf tobacco during aging for 21 months. The threshed leaf tobacco(BlO) produced in 2002 crop year was aged for 21 months in the warehouse of Oc-Cheon Leaf Tobacco Processing Factory. The leaf tobacco were sampled at three month intervals for analysis of volatile compounds. Volatile compounds were identified by GC/MS and comparison of gas chromatographic retention time with those of the authentic standard. The total of 75 compounds from the steam volatile concentrate of the flue-cured leaf tobacco were identified; they were 15 hydrocarbons, 12 alcohols, 3 aldehydes, 18 ketones, 7 esters, 10 acids, 3 phenols, 4 furans, 2 pyrrols and 1 pyridine. The major components of essential oil were neophytadiene, solanone, megastigmatrienone and phytol. After a aging period of 21 months, most of volatile compounds showed a gradual increasing tendency.

Effect of Oxygen Supply on Chemical Composition and Physical Properties of Tobacco Leaves During Flue-curing (잎담배 건조중 산소공급에 따른 내용성분 및 물리성 변화)

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of oxygen on chemical composition and physical properties of tobacco leaves during flue-curing. The results obtained were as follows: Starch content decreased and sucrose content increased with increasing oxygen supply during curing. Glucose and fructose of the cured leaves showed high content at the 5-10% oxygen supply. Amino-N and nitrate-N increased with increasing oxygen supply. Total nitrogen and NH4-N showed the lowest value at the 5-10% and 10-15% oxygen supply in the cutters and leaf, respectively. Chlorophyll and chlorogenic acid increased, and total volatile base decreased with increasing oxygen supply. The activity of α-amylase increased at the latter period of flue-curing, and the maximum activity point were delayed 12 hours with increasing oxygen supply. Shatter index of cured leaves decreased with increasing oxygen supply. It was desirable to supply oxygen during flue-curing for the improvement of chemical and physical properties such as starch, total sugar, chlorogenic acid, and shatter index of cured leaves.
