Electric Model of Li-Ion Polymer Battery for Motor Driving Circuit in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

  • This paper presents an equivalent circuit model of a LIPB (Li-Ion Polymer battery) for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The proposed equivalent circuit can be used to predict the charging/discharging characteristics in time domain as well as the impedance characteristic analysis in frequency domain. Based on these features, a one-cell model is established as a function of Depth of Discharge (DoD), and a 48-cell model for a battery pack was also established. It was confirmed by experiment that the proposed model predict the discharging and impedance (AC) characteristics quite accurately at different constant current levels. To check the usefulness of the proposed circuit, the model was used to simulate a motor driving circuit with an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) inverter and Brushless DC (BLDC) motor, and it is confirmed that the model can calculate the battery voltage fluctuation in time domain at different DoDs.

AC-DC Transfer Characteristics of a Bi-Sb Multijunction Thermal Converter (Bi-Sb 다중접합 열전변환기의 교류-직류 변환 특성)

  • A planar Bi-Sb multijunction thermal converter, which is consisted of a linear or bifilar thin film NiCr-heater and a thin film Bi-Sb thermopile, has been fabricated, and its ac-dc transfer characteristics were examined in a frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 KHz. In order to increase the thermal sensitivity and to decrease the ac-dc transfer error of a thermal converter, the heater and the hot junctions of a thermopile were prepared on a Si$_3$N$_4$/SiO$_2$/Si$_3$N$_4$-diaphragm which acts as a thermal isolation layer, and the cold junctions on the Si$_3$N$_4$/SiO$_2$/Si$_3$N$_4$-thin film supported with the silicon rim which functions as a heat sink. The respective thermal sensitivities in air and in a vacuum of the converter with a built-in bifilar heater were about 14.0 ㎷/㎽ and 54.0 ㎷/㎽, and the ac-dc voltage and the current transfer difference ranges in air were about $\pm$0.60 ppm and $\pm$0.11 ppm, respectively, indicating that the ac-dc transfer accuracy of the converter are much higher than that of a commercial 3-dimensional multijunction thermal converter. However, the output thermoelectric voltage fluctuation of the converter was rather high.

  • The multi-level approach seems to be best suited to high power, high voltage ac drives with low torque ripple and fast dynamic response. If high control performance is required, space vector control becomes desirable, and the task becomes time critical. In this paper, a simplified space vector PWM method for the control of a three level inverter is proposed. As the PWM is simple in structure, it is easy to implement and the fluctuation of the neutral point potential of DC link can be supressed effectively. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PWM strategy can be applied to high power, high voltage inverter systems. And its application to multi-level inverter is easily done on the same principle.

New Backstepping-DSOGI hybrid control applied to a Smart-Grid Photovoltaic System

  • In order to overcome the power fluctuation issues in photovoltaic (PV) smart grid-connected systems and the inverter nonlinearity model problem, an adaptive backstepping command-filter and a double second order generalized Integrators (DSOGI) controller are designed in order to tune the AC current and the DC-link voltage from the DC side. Firstly, we propose to present the filter mathematical model throughout the PV system, at that juncture the backstepping control law is applied in order to control it, Moreover the command filter is bounded to the controller aiming to exclude the backstepping controller differential increase. Additionally, The adaptive law uses Lyapunov stability criterion. Its task is to estimate the uncertain parameters in the smart grid-connected inverter. A DSOGI is added to stabilize the grid currents and eliminate undesirable harmonics meanwhile feeding maximum power generated from PV to the point of common coupling (PCC). Then, guaranteeing a dynamic effective response even under very unbalanced loads and/or intermittent climate changes. Finally, the simulation results will be established using MATLAB/SIMULINK proving that the presented approach can control surely the smart grid-connected system.

Thin Film Chromel-Alumel Multjunction Thermal Converter (박막형 크로멜-알루멜 다중접합 열전변환기)

  • For the purpose of reducing the output voltage fluctuation of thin film multijunction thermal converter, EVANOHM alloy-S and chromel-alumel thermocouple were used as a thin film heater material and as a thermoelement of thrmopile, respectively. The temperature coefficient of the resistance of thin film EVANOHM alloy-S heater was about $1.4 {\times} 10^4/^{\circ}C$, which is very small compared to other materials, and thin film chromel-alumel thermocouple showed relatively small difference of the Seebeck coefficients about $38 {\mu}V/K$. The output voltage fluctuation of the thermal converter was about 0.06% for the initial 120 seconds in air and decreased considerably after preheating for 5 minutes or more. The respective AC-DC voltage and current transfer error ranges of the thermal converter were about ${\pm}$1.6 ppm and ${\pm}$0.7 ppm in the frequency range from 10Hz to 10 kHz and increased remarkably below 10 Hz or above 10 kHz.

  • Generally, an electric railroad feeding system has many problems due to the different characteristics in contrast with a load of general three-phase AC electric power system. One of them is harmonics problem caused by the switching device existing in the feeding system, and moreover, the time-varying dynamic loads of rail way is inherently another cause to increase this harmonics problem. In Korea power systems, the electric railroad feeding system is directly supplied from the substation of KEPCO. Therefore, if voltages fluctuation or unbalanced voltages are created by the voltage and current distortion or voltage drop during operation, it affects directly the source of supply. The trainloads of electric railway system have non-periodic but iterative harmonic characteristics as operating condition, because the electric characteristic of the electric railroad feeding system is changed by physical conditions of the each trainload. According to the traditional study, the estimation of harmonics has been performed by deterministic way using the steady state data at the specific time. This method is easy to analyze harmonics, but it has limits in some cases which needs an assessment of dynamic load and reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes the probabilistic estimation method, moments matching method(MW) in order to overcome the drawback of deterministic method. In this paper, distributions for each harmonics are convolved to obtain the moments and cumulants of TDD(Total Demand Distortion), and this can be generalized for any number of trains. For the case study, the electric railway system of LAT(Intra Airport Transit) in Incheon International Airport is modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC dynamic simulator. The raw data of harmonics for the moments matching method is acquired from simulation of the LAT model.

A Design of Power System Stabilization of TCSC System for Power system Oscillation Damping (전력 시스템의 동요 억제를 위한 TCSC용 안정화 장치 설계)

  • In this paper, it is suggested that the selection method of parameter of Power System Stabilizer(PSS) with robustness in low frequency oscillation for Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor(TCSC) using Geletic Algorithm(GA). A TCSC meddle consists of a stories capacitor and a parallel path with a thyristor valve and a series inductor. Also in in parallel, as is typical with series capacitor applications, is a metal-oxide varistor(MOV) for overvoltage protection. The proposed PSS parameters are optimized using GA in order to maintain optimal operation of TCSC which is expected to be applied in transmission system to achieve a number of benefits under the various operating conditions. In order to verify the robustness of the proposed method, we considered the dynamic response of angular velocity deviation and terminal voltage deviation under a power fluctuation and rotor angle variation.

The High Power Active Filter System for Harmonic Compensation of 25kv Electric Railway (25kV 전기철도 고조파 보상을 위한 고전력 능동전력필터 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • At present, harmonic currents cause serious problems in power conversion system using the semiconductor switching device. Also some of the conversion system provokes harmonic currents against to the main power supply system and causes hindrances for the system. Main power impedance of the traditional LC passive filter method, influences on the filter characteristics and amplifies the harmonics when resonance phenomenon is occurred. And the traditional existing 2 level inverter systems show the limit in capacity of voltage and current in case of occurring sudden load change. So, to solve this problem active filter which uses cascaded H-bridge multi level inverter has been designed and ex-filter system circuits were totally investigated. With multi level active filtering system not only the size of filter but also the size of filter for transformer can be reduced by half and so as to the weight, while the capacity of inverter can be double sized and wave forms can be compensated exactly and precisely. Also by the benefit of the increase in rating capacity, the various currents owing to the load fluctuation can be dealt more steadily. In order to simulate the wave form of harmonics based on the measured data on the AC 25kV high speed Domestic Commercial railway, it was simulated with PSCAD/EMTDC and PSIM. Based on the results of this demonstration, the power supply system and inverter system would be more stable and also promoting its efficiency.
