  • Korean Government has been promoting Four River Restoration Project (i.e., Han, Geum, Nakdong, and Yeongsan rivers) since the second half of 2008. This project is expected to protect against floods and droughts by water resources management. Many researchers have study water resources management, but most studies were focused on direct runoff. However, in order to efficiently protect against floods and droughts, baseflow should be studied as well as direct runoff. Because baseflow has a great effect on streamflow, it needs to be correctly analyzed. For more accurate analysis of baseflow, direct runoff and baseflow from streamflow should be separated first. In this study, 12 flow gauging stations of four major rivers were selected, and flow data from them were obtained (2004-2010) through WAMIS and Web-based SWAT Bflow system (http://www.envsys.co.kr/~swatbflow) which was used to separate direct runoff and baseflow. Baseflow values of Pass 2 in SWAT Bflow system were used. As a result of this study, baseflow contribution was ranged from 23.4% to 68.6% and accounted for about 50% of streamflow. Through this study, it shows that in the case of the flow fluctuation, baseflow is more affected than direct runoff by changes in streamflow in a flood or dry season. Thus, baseflow estimation should not be overlooked for efficient water resources management. However, it has a limitation in this study that because this study used to select randomly 12 flow gauging stations, it did not show a common tendency on each watershed. It is important that flow gauging stations reflected on topographic characteristics of each watershed should be selected in a rigorous manner for further reliable and accurate baseflow estimation on four major rivers.

  • The numerical study on the surface buoyant jets has remained of requiring more intensive investigation for problems due to the treatments of free surface, Reynolds stress/flux terms in turbulent flow and especially buoyancy effects on the turbulent fluctuation. etc. The verification of predicted results from the numerical study continues in the qualitative study. because of the lack of experimental data, which seems to be due to the difficulties in measuring the turbulent fluctuations in concentration or temperature fields. In this study, the computer program of Algebraic Stress Model has been developed to investigate the behaviours of two-dimensional surface buoyant jets with free surface boundary condition. The computational results are compared with published experimental data. By comparing these results with experimental data. it is found that this model can predict fairly well the flow characteristics of two-dimensional surface buoyant jets in the momentum-dominant region and buovancy-dominant region. Especially, it is proved that this model can predict the flow characteristics reasonably in buoyancy-dominant region stably stratified due to buoyancy effect.

  • With the rapid increase in the price of house lease, a unique housing form in Korea, a serious social issue has been raised as to the use value of house lease and residence stability of the ordinary people. This study thus aimed to analyze the direct factors that affect lease guaranteed loan and market volatility in order to explore the right direction of financial policy to reduce housing burdens. To this end, the direct variables affecting house lease guaranteed loan, including lease price, transaction price and lending rate, were defined. Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), a time series analysis, was employed to dynamically explain the data. Based on the house lease prices and bank data on loans between January 2010 and December 2014, it was found that the increase in lease price was the direct result of the increase in lease guaranteed loan, not that of the decrease in lending rate or increase in housing transaction price.

  • To know the penetration behavior of spilled oil into sandy beach sediment is very important, because the penetration depth of the stranded oil into the sediments is one of the most significant information to know effect of spilled oil on biological communities and to set up cleaning method. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and/or tidal action on penetration of spilled oil into the sediments and to clarify main factor in oil penetration using sandy beach model. Specific conclusions derived from this study are as follows. Spilled fuel oil C penetrated into the sediments only by falling tidal fluctuation and not by wave action on sandy beach environment, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 80% of bulk fraction in penetrated fuel oil C was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.

  • Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.

  • The horizontal heat-pulse flowmeter was used to measure grounwater flow in volcanic rocks at sites in eastern part of Jeju Island, Korea. Three boreholes, Handong-1, Jongdal-1, and Susan-1, which are located at close distance from the coastline, were selected from the sea water intrusion monitoring wells. To evaluate the direction and velocity of the groundwater flow, 6 to 8 measuring points for each borehole were chosen. There are two major flow directions at Handong-1, which are toward north-east and south-east directions and velocity ranges from $2.2{\sim}3.0cm/hr\;and\;0.6{\sim}1.0cm/hr$, respectively. For Jongdal-1, two major flow directions were detected that are east and north-west and velocity ranges from $1.2{\sim}2.0cm/hr$. For Susan-1, major flow is toward east direction and the ,velocity ranges from $2.2{\sim}2.7cm/hr$ at depth $60{\sim}70m$,\;and\;0.8{\sim}0.9cm/hr$ at depth $70{\sim}80m$. In order to evaluate the tidal effect on groundwater flow, direction and velocity were measured at specific depth with time, At depth 57m of Susan-1, the velocity increased during the tidal variation, The flow direction and velocity varies with different depths, and they are also affected by tidal fluctuation. Thereafter, care must be taken when flow direction and velociy is estimated indirectly by using hydraulic head at monitoring wells.

  • The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.

  • In this study, we tried to determine the vertical variation of sediment structure and geochemical characteristics, core sediment was collected in the Nakdong River midstream on August, 2014. Core sediment mainly composed of sand (51.48%) and silt (46.21%) and coarsing upward changed from sM to mS facies. IL and TOC were decreased from lower to upper layer. C/N ratio was lower than 10 so the organic matters were originated from underwater creatures and C/S ratio was decreased from lower to upper layer. Heavy metal (Al, Fe, Zn, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cd) content were decreased from lower to upper layer and seriously polluted condition is not. These results are thought to be due to the effect of natural and anthropogenic in the fluctuation of flow.

  • This study was conducted to present primary data on the change of the physical characteristics of reservoir sediments for understanding the sedimentation. The records of the annual summation of the precipitation of >50mm per day (AP50) were compared with changes of bulk density, organic matter, mean grain-size, and sand ratio in sediment cores sampled from three reservoirs without dredging record. Reservoir sediments, characterized by mineral soil, contained organic matters originated from the debris of terrestrial plants, and changes of organic matter were related to changes of grain-size flowing into reservoirs when sediments of fine sandy loam showed 10% of organic matter contents. Rapid changes of grain-size and sand ratio in the sediment cores were associated with the increase and decrease of precipitation, and fluctuation of water level and water flow in reservoirs might have influenced on the formation of sediments in reservoirs. Records of AP50 suggested that sediments could accumulate more than about 30 within the short period of 10 years. The accumulated sediments in a short time can reflect the effect of natural and anthropogenic events on the physical characteristics of sediments.

  • Effects of moxibution at the Gwanweon, Jungwan and Joksamlee on the blood picture in rat with transportation stress were determined. Counts of RBC showed a tendency to increase from 6 hours to 12 hours after transportation stress, however in the moxibution group, showed no changes in counts of RBC after transportation stress and the tendency of fluctuation was similiar to those of none stress group. The changes in Hb after transportation stress showed no difference among moxibution group and none moxibution group, however the changes in PCV showed a tendency to increase from 3 hours to 6 hours after transportation stress in two stress group. In the mean values of erythrocytic blood during experimental times, counts of RBC showed a high values (P<.05) in the stress only group, however in the other groups, these values showed no difference (P>.05) among treatment and the values of Hb and PCV showed no difference among 4 treatment groups. In the two stress groups, counts of WBC and Neutrophils showed a tendency to decrease after transportation stress, however the moxibution group was recovered to normal Leukocytes condition on short time compared with those of none moxibution group. In the mean values of Leukocytes during experimental times, counts of WBC and Neutrophils showed a high values and Lymphocytes showed a low values in the stress only group compared with those of other groups, however the stress group with moxibution showed no difference in Leukocytes values compared with those of normal condition group. Monocytes, Basophils and Eosinophils showed no difference among 4 treatment groups(P>.05). Results from this study indicate that the moxibution can tolerate the effects of transportation stress in rat.
