Frankliniella occidentalis is attracted to flowers and is a major pest of chrysanthemums. Even when some chrysanthemum plants are not flowering, the ones that have already flowered attract F. occidentalis. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of chrysanthemum as a trap plant that attract F. occidentalis by using an olfactometer. The numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the flowers of pink, wihte and yellow standard chrysanthemums on a tray with wet paper during the flowering period were 18.4, 56.6, and 52.6 respectively; the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from leaves were 7.8, 16.6, and 15.4 respectively. the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the buds of pink, white and yellow standard chrysanthemums were 15.2, 45.8, and 41.6 respectively; the numbers of F. occidentalis collected from the leaves were 2, 8.8 and 3.4 respectively. In the Y-tube olfactometer test, the number of F. occidentalis attracted to the 2-way arms of the Y-tube was not significantly different for the yellow, red, violet and white flowers. In the four-choice olfactometer test, when the same visual cues and odor cues were provided, the frequency of F. occidentalis was higher in the yellow (10.7) flowers than in the red (1.3), violet (3.7) and white (2.0) flowers. When visual cues with disturbed odor cues, F. occidentalis preferred yellow (10.0) color over red (3.3), violet (1.3) and white (3.0) colors. When the same visual and odor cues, except for yellow visual cues, were provided, F. occidentalis preferred white (8.3) color over red (4.7), violet (4.7) and yellow (2.0) colors. Therefore, F. occidentalis were attracted to buds before the flowering of chrysanthemum plants and attracted to yellow flowers after the flowering.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the response of rice growth and grain yield to night illumination. Three cultivars Heugjubyeo (early maturing), Hwaseongbyeo (medium maturing), and Ilpumbyeo(mid-late maturing) were tested under different light intensities ranging 1.0 to 20.0 lux (0.3 to 5.6 $1\mu\textrm{W}$$cm^{-2}$). Awn length of all cultivars became longer as night illumination intensity increased; 4.09 cm under 10-20 lux compared to 1.93cm under 2 lux in Hwaseongbyeo. However culm and spike length ere not affected by night illumination. Night illumination delayed flowering by 3 days in Heugjinjubyeo, 5 days in Hwaseongbyeo, and 9 days in Ilpumbyeo at 10-20 lux compared to that at 2 lux. Grain yield was reduced by 10.0% in Heugjinjubyeo, 17.7% in Hwaseongbyeo, and 20.7% in Ilpumbyeo at 10-20 lux compared to 2 lux condition.
This experiment was carried out to examine ecological response and soybean quality as affected by environmental cultivation for producing high seed quality in domestic soybean variety. The results are as follows: Under equal cumulative temperature condition, soybean plants grown in Muju showed longer days to flowering, which was an effect of the long day-length on high latitudes, and longer duration of reproductive stage as a result of low temperature within that period. Considering apparent seed quality, 100 seed weight of soybeans grown in Muju was heavier than Miryang. Ratio of seed crack and disease-damaged seeds was lower in Muju, and these parameters decreases as planting was delayed. The protein contents did not show significant difference in terms of altitude and planting date, however, crude oil contents were higher in Miryang. An opposite trend was observed in C18:1 and C18:3. In the fatty acid composition, the proportion of C18:1 decreased as seeding date was delayed, and was higher in Miryang. Opposite observations were obtained from C18:3. The anthocyanin contents were highest on June 10 planting and higher in Muju than in Miryang. Isoflavone content was higher as seeding date was delayed and is similar accross seeding dates in Muju. As a summary, for high seed quality production the optimum planting date was June 10, and Muju was more suitable region than Miryang.
The effect of alcoholic extract of Anthocephalus (A.) Cadamba Roxb. was evaluated in experimental models of pain and ulcer. Hot tail flick test, hot plate test and acetic acid induced writhing test were employed for evaluating the peripheral as well as central analgesic mechanism exerted by the extracts. Gastroprotective activity was examined by HCl and ethanol induced gastric damage test. Test group received crude extract 500 mg/kg showed maximum time needed for the response against thermal stimuli (6.26 ${\pm}$ 0.439 s) which is comparable to diclofenac sodium (6.56 ${\pm}$ 0.381 s) in hot tail flick method. These experimental results also followed the experimental results of hot plate test where crude extract 500 mg/kg showed maximum time needed for the response against thermal stimuli (4.74 ${\pm}$ 0.234 s) which is comparable to diclofenac sodium (5.58 ${\pm}$ 0.585 s). The crude extract at 500 and 250 mg/kg showed significant reduction in acetic acid induced writhing in mice with a maximum effect of 68.026% reduction at 500 mg/kg dose which is comparable to standard diclofenac sodium (79.93%). In gastroprotective study the extract of A. Cadamba (250 and 500 mg/kg) significantly inhibited ulceration induced by both HCl and ethanol dose dependently. Results of the study suggest that the extract possesses both analgesic and gastroprotective activity on mice.

The vigor condition of trees is an important indicator for the management of urban forested area. But difficulties in how to assess the tree vigor condition still remain. Previous efforts were limited in the 1) measurement of single indicator rather than using multiple indices, 2) purpose-oriented measurement such as for air-pollution effect or specific pathological symptom, and 3) ordinal-scale evaluations by field crews 4) despite human errors based on his/her experiences or prior knowledge. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a quantitative and objective methodology for assessing tree vigor condition, by measuring multiple modules and building the profile inventory. Furthermore, the possibility and limitations were discussed in terms of schematic frames describing tree vigor condition. The vigor condition of 56 flowering cherry plants in urban park were assessed by in-situ measurements of following eight items; growth of crown(Gc), growth of shoots, individual tree volume(Vol), plant area index, woody area index, leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content(Lc) and leaf water content(Lw). For validation, these measurements were compared with the ranks of holistic tree vigor condition, which were visually assessed using a 4-point grading scale based on the expert's knowledge. As a result, the measures of each evaluation item successfully highlighted a variety of aspects in tree vigor condition, including the states of both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic parts. The variation in the results depending on evaluated parts was shown within an individual tree, even though the broad agreement among the results was found. The result of correlation analysis between the tested measurements and 4-point visual assessment, demonstrated that the state of water-stressed foliage of the season (Lw) or the development of plant materials since sapling phase (Vol) could be better viewed from the outer appearance of trees than other symptoms. But only based on the visual assessment, it may be difficult to detect the quality of photosynthesis (Lc) or the recent trend in growth of trees (Gc). To make this methodology simplified for the broad-scale application, the tested eight measurements could be integrated into two components by principal component analysis, which was labelled with 'the amount of plant materials' and 'vigor trend', respectively. In addition, the use of these quantitative and multi-scale indicators underlies the importance of assessing various aspects of tree vigor condition, taking into account the response(s) on different time and spatial scale of pressure(s) shown in each evaluated module. Future study should be advanced for various species at diverse developing stages and environment, and the application to wide areas at a periodic manner.
Current season's shoots on 2-year-old branches of 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' apple trees were heading back pruned to 5 leaves from early May to mid July at about 12-day intervals. The summer heading back pruning induced regrowth on the pruned shoots with different responses between the two cultivars. Generally, greater regrowth occurred on the pruned shoots of 'Fuji' trees than on those of 'Jonagold', irrespective of the time of the heading cut. The shoots of 'Fuji' trees pruned in late May or in June exhibited greater regrowth compared with those pruned in early May or in July, whereas the summer heading back pruning in June resulted in the greatest regrowth for 'Jonagold'. The heading cut induced terminal flower bud formation on the pruned shoots, the percentage of which was higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The highest percentages of terminal flower bud formation for 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' were obtained with the heading cut in late May and in mid June, respectively. Percent flowering of the buds was similar in both cultivars, but percent fruit set was slightly higher in 'Fuji' than in 'Jonagold'. The time of the heading cut did not affect percent fruit set in both cultivars. Our results demonstrate that summer heading back pruning of current season's shoots induces regrowth and terminal flower bud formation therefrom when done at appropriate time, but the specific responses to the heading cut are cultivardependent.
The present study was conducted to establish the optimal fertilization type and method for no-tillage during the first year of No-tillage (NT) and Conventional-tillage (CT) practices for soybean, using different types of fertilizers. In this experiment, the culm length and stalk diameter showed a greater response to fertilization with surface irrigation than to conventional fertilization. The fastest flowering period (July 28) occurred using chemical fertilization applied via subsurface irrigation. Comparing maturation based on growth characteristics and flowering date revealed that fertilization with subsurface irrigation was more effective for the growth of crops than other methods. Regarding yield, there was no significant difference between livestock and chemical fertilizers in subsurface irrigation, but there were significant differences between these fertilizers when using conventional fertilization methods. Based on the results, livestock fertilizer with subsurface irrigation effectively enhanced crop quantity. Nitrogen absorption of plants using subsurface irrigation was more effective than that using conventional fertilization. Regarding phosphorus absorption of plants, chemical fertilizers showed higher absorption than did livestock fertilizers for both subsurface irrigation and conventional fertilization. Unlike nitrogen, phosphorus was highly absorbed using conventional fertilization. Absorption of phosphorus and potassium were similar but phosphorus was not absorbed using livestock fertilizers applied either using subsurface irrigation or with conventional fertilization.

The effect of night temperature was investigated on mango (Mangifera indica cv. Irwin) for setting appropriate night temperature and managing mango cultivation in a greenhouse. Different night temperatures (10, 15, and 20℃) were treated from budding to fruit development in mango trees. As night temperature increased, the initiation of flowering, full blooming, fruiting, and fruit development tended to be accelerated. There were no significant differences in the growth of shoots flushed after the fruit harvest among trees treated with different night temperatures. The lengths of the flower stalk were the shortest at 10℃ of night temperature; however, there were no significant differences between 15℃ and 20℃ of the night temperature. The length, diameter, and weight of mango fruits were higher at 15℃ and 20℃ than 10℃. Soluble solid contents and acidities showed no difference; the firmness and skin color were better as the night temperature increased. Accordingly, setting the minimum night temperatures to 15℃ or 20℃ can increase the number of fruits and produce high-quality fruits when cultivating mango in the greenhouse. Even the minimum night temperature to 15℃ can reduce heating costs in the greenhouse.
Korean sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas, varieties were examined for their flowering response as a fundamental research to improve breeding efficiency by hybridization of this crop. Under 10.0~10.5 hours short day condition, self-rooted plants of three varieties such as Shinmi, Hongmi and Hwangmi flowered sparsely or moderately, and those of fourteen varieties including Eunmi flowered very sparsely. Under 10.6~12.0 hours day length condition, self-rooted plants of three varieties such as Shinmi, Hongmi and Hwangmi flowered very sparsely. Under the day length longer than 12 hours, none of the tested plants flowered. In all the sweetpotato plants grafted on morning glory, flowering occurred with varying degrees by varieties and day lengths. Under 10.0~10.5 hours day length, thirty two varieties including Hongmi flowered moderately or profusely, and one variety such as Mokgye 1 flowered sparsely. Under 10.6~12 hours day length, twenty three varieties including Sinchunmi flowered moderately or profusely, nine varieties including Jeungmi flowered sparsely, and Mokgye 1 didn't flower at all.

To intensively analyze and examine the changes in palatability of cooked rice and structural properties of rice grains influenced by increased nitrogen topdressing during the panicle formation and ripening stage, a series of experiments were carried out using three japonica rice cultivars with contrasting rice quality characteristics. The protein content of brown rice increased maximally up to $35{\sim}47%$ of that in standard N6 plot with the increase in nitrogen topdressing fertilizer during 20 days before heading to 10 days after flowering. The high-yielding rice cultivars showing poor palatability of cooked rice revealed larger increase in protein content of rice grains by increased nitrogen topdressing. Under the same nitrogen level of 15 kg per 10a with nitrogen topdressing at 3 kg/10a, high-yielding rice cultivars, Yumehikari and Reihou showed the significant increase in protein content of brown rice when topdressing was applied at 10 days after flowering as compared with when it was applied at 30 days after transplanting. Although the variation in amylose content of milled rice as affected by nitrogen topdressing level was relatively small, it decreased within 1% with the opposite tendency against increased protein content of brown rice by increased nitrogen topdressing. The total score of sensory evaluation was higher in the order of Hinohikari < Yumehikari < Reihou in panel test. It decreased significantly by increased amounts of nitrogen topdressing during 20 days before heading to 10 days after flowering when nitrogen level was higher than 12 kg/10a. The more poor palatable rice cultivar in panel test revealed the larger decreasing in total score of sensory evaluation by higher nitrogen topdressing rates. All sensory evaluation components were largely affected by the change in protein content of brown rice rather than amylose content of milled rice. The influence of protein content to palatability of cooked rice was larger in poor-palatable rice than in high-palatable rice. The protein content decreased drastically from outer layer to inner layer of rice grains, while the amylose content increased on the contrary. The high-palatable rice exhibited higher distribution of protein content on bran layer but lower distribution of protein content on the layer of polished rice as compared with the poor-palatable rice. Especially, the high-palatable rice showed also significantly lower distribution of amylose content on the outer layer of polished rice as compared with the poor-palatable rice.
