The flow analysis of the axial fan of rotary burner was performed by SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm and finite volume mothod performed in the case of 3-D, incompressible, turbulent flow. In this study, the coordinate transformation was adapted for the complex geometry of axial fan, and the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and wall function method were used for analysis of turbulent flow. Multi-block grid system was used for flow field and divided into four domains such as the inlet, outlet, flow field of rotating vane, and tip clearance. Fan rotation was simulated by rotational motion using MRF(Multiple Rotating Reference Frame) in steady, incompressible state flow.
The IB-SEM numerical method combines the spectral/hp element method and the rigid immersed boundary method. This method avoids the problems of low computational efficiency and errors that are caused by the re-division of the grid when the solids move. Based on the Fourier transformation and the 3D immersed boundary method, the 3D IB-SEM system was established. Then, using the open MPI and the Hamilton HPC service, the computational efficiency was increased substantially. The flows around a cylinder and a sphere were simulated by the system. The surface of the cylinder generates vortices with alternating shedding, and these vortices result in a periodic force acting on the surface of the cylinder. When the shedding vortices enter the flow field behind the cylinder, a recirculation zone is formed. Finally, the three-dimensional pore flow was successfully investigated.
Numerical models were employed to investigate the hydrodynamics of water flow in the lake behind a dam and the spillway where supercritical flows and negative pressures are likely to occur. In this study, 2-D model, RMA2 was employed to examine the upstream flow pattern and 3-D CFD model, FLUENT was used to evaluate the three-dimensional flow in the approaching region and flow distributions in the spillways and discharge culverts. The bathymetry and the details of structures were carefully taken into consideration in building the models. The results from applying the 2-D model for the planned Hantan River Dam show that large eddies, the velocity of which reaches up to 1 m/s are occurring in several places upstream of the dam. That means that the 2-D numerical model could be utilized to investigate the two-dimensional flow patterns after the construction of a dam. Three-dimensional numerical results show that the approach flow varies depending on stages and discharge conditions, and velocities at spillways, discharge culverts, and sediment flushing tunnels are differently distributed. The velocity distributions obtained from the numerical model and a hydraulic model at the centerline of spillways 100 m upstream of the dam show reasonably similar results. It is expected that 2-D and 3-D numerical models ate useful tools to help optimize the dam design through investigating the flow patterns in the spillway and at the upstream of the dam, which is not always feasible in hydraulic modeling.

The aim of this study is to compare the numerical results obtained by 2-D and 3-D models which are used to examine the wave field around a permeable submerged breakwater. At first, the numerical model, which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model, is used and validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, the numerical test on the wave field around a permeable submerged breakwater is performed. It is revealed from the numerical results that, at the onshore side of the submerged breakwater, the wave height by 2-D analysis is higher than that by 3-D analysis. Also, the time-averaged mean flow around a submerged breakwater is discussed in detail.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.

In order to evaluate the local scour around offsshore wind foundation, mono pile and jacket foundation were simulated by using FLOW-3D. Numerical analysis results show that local increases of velocity around mono pile and jacket foundation was developed but velocity decreases in backward of pile and leg due to the wake vortex was observed. Local increases of velocity around foundation and scouring of jacket is more significant than that of mono pile, since jacket is the complex structure and has the interference effect with legs. Therefore, in order to evaluate the scour and design the scour protection method, the form and shape of substructures of offshore wind should be considered.

The impulsive spin-up flow in a shallow rectangular container is analyzed numerically by quasi 3-D unsteady laminar flow. In the non-inertia coordinates, the flow is generated by the virtual forces as Coriolis force, etc.. After the boundary layers grow up near sidewalls, primary vortexes separate from the sidewalls. As the Reynolds number increases, the subsidiary vortexes take place in the boundary layer. The rigid body rotation is started from the inner region and propagated to the outer region, finally all the fluid reaches the rigid body rotation. According to the Reynolds number and the aspect ratio, the development of vortex pattern is symmetric or asymmetric.
Labyrinth seals are commonly used in various kinds of turbomachinery to reduce leakage flow. In the present 3D CFD analysis of see-through-type labyrinth air seal, the methodology of determining leakage and rotordynamic coefficients is suggested with the relative coordinate system for steady-state simulation. The leakage flow and rotordynamic forces predicted by using different solvers and turbulent models of FLUENT are compared with the results of the existing bulk-flow analysis code LABYSEAL.FOR and experiment. The present CFD result of direct stiffness(K) shows only improvement in prediction. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients as well as computing time are sensitive against the used solver and turbulent model.

A stereoscopic PIV (SPIV) measurement system based on the translation configuration was developed and applied to the flow behind a forward-swept axial-fan. Measurement of three orthogonal velocity components is essential for flow analysis of three-dimensional flows such as flow around a fan or propeller. In this study, the translation configuration was adopted to calculate the out-of-plane velocity component from 2-D PIV data obtained from two CCD cameras. The error caused by the out-of-plane motion was estimated by direct comparison of the 2-D PIV and 3-D SPIV results that measured from the particle images captured simultaneously. The comparison shows that the error ratio is relatively high in the region of higher out-of-plane motion near the axial fan blade. The turbulence intensity measured by the 2-D PIV method is bigger by about 5.8% in maximum compared with that of the 3-D SPIV method. The phase-averaged velocity field results show that the wake behind an axial fan has a periodic flow structure with respect to the blade phase and the characteristic flow structure is shifted downstream in the next phase.
The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model - combining the flow module of Delft3D with the WAVE solver of XBeach - of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics that can simulate flow, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. Surf-swash zone hydrodynamics were modeled using the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, combined with various turbulence models (${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES). Sediment transport and resulting foreshore profile changes were approximated using different sediment transport relations that consider both bed- and suspended-load transport of non-cohesive sediments. The numerical set-up was tested against field data, with good agreement found. Different numerical experiments under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were run to test the model's capability to reproduce 3D flow, wave propagation, sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore at the field scale. The results were interpreted according to existing understanding of surf and swash zone processes. Our numerical experiments confirm that the angle between the crest line of the approaching wave and the shoreline defines the direction and strength of the longshore current, while the longshore current velocity varies across the nearshore zone. The model simulates the undertow, hydraulic cell and rip-current patterns generated by radiation stresses and longshore variability in wave heights. Numerical results show that a non-uniform seabed is crucial for generation of rip currents in the nearshore (when bed slope is uniform, rips are not generated). Increasing the wave height increases the peaks of eddy viscosity and TKE (turbulent kinetic energy), while increasing the tidal amplitude reduces these peaks. Wave and tide interaction has most striking effects on the foreshore profile with the formation of the intertidal bar. High values of eddy viscosity, TKE and wave set-up are spread offshore for coarser grain sizes. Beach profile steepness modifies the nearshore circulation pattern, significantly enhancing the vertical component of the flow. The local recirculation within the longshore current in the inshore region causes a transient offshore shift and strengthening of the longshore current. Overall, the analysis shows that, with reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to simulate the nearshore hydrodynamics subjected to oceanic forcing, consistent with existing understanding of this area. Part II of this work presents 3D nearshore morphodynamics induced by the tides and waves.
