Aerodynamic characteristics of wavy splitter plate on circular cylinder

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of a circular cylinder with a wavy splitter plate were experimentally studied, specifically the potential reduction of drag and fluctuations in drag. To study the individual effects of amplitude and wavelength, the experiments were conducted by varying one parameter at a time while holding the other one constant. To study the effect of amplitude (A), the wavelength to diameter ratio (λ/D) was fixed at 0.115 and the amplitude to diameter ratio (A/D) was varied as 0.005, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020. Similarly, to study the effect of wavelength, A/D was fixed as 0.020 and λ/D was varied as 0.46, 0.23, 0.15 and 0.12. Analysis of the data indicated that the wavy splitter plate caused a significant reduction in both the magnitude and the fluctuation of drag. The variation of aerodynamic forces and the fluctuations with them corresponding to different Reynolds numbers were computed and the spectral aspects of fluctuating forces due to vortex shedding is analysed and effective reduction in both shedding frequency and magnitude was observed.

  • Turbulent structure of a boundary-layer over a flat plate coated with micro riblet film(MRF) has been investigated experimentally. The turbulent structure was visualized using a dynamic particle image velocimetry (Dynamic PIV) system. We identified the vortex structures from 2-D velocity field data by applying the complex eigenvalue definition. The velocity field images acquired by using the complex eigenvalue definition showed the whole 2-D vortex structures clearly. In addition, the spatial distributions of small-scale vortices as well as large-scale vortices were obtained with high accuracy. The difference of vortex structures between the MRF coated flat plate and the smooth flat plate was analysed in detail. With varying upstream flow speed, the characteristics of vortex structure over the MRF coated flate plate was compared with those over the smooth flat plate.

Control of the flow past a sphere in a turbulent boundary layer using O-ring

  • This research work presents an experimental study's outcomes to reveal the impact of an O-ring on the flow control over a sphere placed in a turbulent boundary layer. The investigation is performed quantitatively and qualitatively using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and dye visualization. The sphere model having a diamater of 42.5 mm is located in a turbulent boundary layer flow over a smooth plate for gap ratios of 0≤G/D≤1.5 at Reynolds number of 5 × 103. Flow characteristics, including patterns of instantaneous vorticity, streaklines, time-averaged streamlines, velocity vectors, velocity fluctuations, Reynolds stress correlations, and turbulence kinetic energy (), are compared and discussed for a naked sphere and spheres having O-rings. The boundary layer velocity gradient and proximity of the sphere to the flat plate profoundly influence the flow dynamics. At proximity ratios of G/D=0.1 and 0.25, a wall jet is formed between lower side of the sphere and flat plate, and velocity fluctuations increase in regions close to the wall. At G/D=0.25, the jet flow also induces local flow separations on the flat plate. At higher proximity ratios, the velocity gradient of the boundary layer causes asymmetries in the mean flow characteristics and turbulence values in the wake region. It is observed that the O-ring with various placement angles (𝜃) on the sphere has a considerable alteration in the flow structure and turbulence statistics on the wake. At lower placement angles, where the O-ring is closer to the forward stagnation point of the sphere, the flow control performance of the O-ring is limited; however, its impact on the flow separation becomes pronounced as it is moved away from the forward stagnation point. At G/D=1.50 for O-ring diameters of 4.7 (2 mm) and 7 (3 mm) percent of the sphere diameter, the -ring exhibits remarkable flow control at 𝜃=50° and 𝜃=55° before laminar flow separation occurrence on the sphere surface, respectively. This conclusion is yielded from narrowed wakes and reductions in turbulence statistics compared to the naked sphere model. The O-ring with a diameter of 3 mm and placement angle of 50° exhibits the most effective flow control. It decreases, in sequence, streamwise velocity fluctuations and length of wake recovery region by 45% and 40%, respectively, which can be evaluated as source of decrement in drag force.

  • Generally, flow around a bluff body such as a circular cylinder is complicated compared with that around a streamlined body because of the existence of separated shear layers.   • A numerical investigation is made of air flow in a spinner equipment used for cleanning and drying flat display panels. A unique feature of the spinner under question is the placement of a torus plate cover over the rotating plate. The turbulent flow is driven by rotation of a large disk and suction by the exhaust system connected to vacuum chamber. The flow is modelled as an axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and computation is conducted by using the FLUENT package with a version of k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The required capacity of the exhaust system is assessed numerically. The usefulness of the cover in controlling air flow circulation is examined. A computational trouble shooting is attempted to resolve the problem of panel rising which occurred in real experiment.

벽면 근처에 놓인 정방형주의 수직 분할판에 의한 유동 제어 (The Flow Control by a Vertical Splitter Plate for a Square Prism near a Wall)

  • 본 연구는 벽면 근처에 놓인 정방형주의 모서리에 수직 분할판을 부착하여 유체력 제어 효과를 양항력 측정실험 및 PIV에 의한 가시화 실험으로 조사한 것이다. 분할판의 폭은 정방형주 폭의 10% 로 했다. 실험변수로서는 수직 분할판의 부착 위치 및 벽면과 사각주 사이의 간격으로 하였다. 정방형주 중심에서 후류방향으로 3.0B(B: 정방형주 한 변 길이) 떨어진 곳에서 와도의 변화가 가장 명확했다. 수직 분할판의 위치 및 유무와 관계없이 간격비 0.4~0.6에서 평균양력계수 및 Strouhal 수의 변곡점이 나타났다. 정방형주 윗면의 뒷 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 경우 항력이 감소하였으며 각 간격비 평균 5.0%의 항력 저감 효과를 얻었다. 정방형주 윗면 박리영역의 크기는 앞쪽 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 경우가 가장 컸고, 원형의 정방형주, 뒷쪽 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 순서로 작았으며, 평균항력계수는 이 박리영역의 크기에 비례했다.

  • The flow characteristics of impinging jet flow are affected greatly by nozzle plate to distances. An sharp edge nozzle was used to achieve uniform mean velocity at the nozzle inlet, and its diameter is 10mm(d). Therefore, the flow characteristics on the impinging jet plate can be changed largely by the control of main flow. In the parent study, we investigate the effects of main flow length , its variable is nozle plate to distances( 12d, 10d, 8d, 6d and 4d).

  • This paper proposes a control scheme to reduce the power consumption of a variable displacement swash-plate type piston pump supplying oil to a valve-controlled hydraulic cylinder at constant pressure. Whenever flow rate demand was absent, the swash plate angle and the pump speed were changed to the minimum values required to compensate for the internal leakage flow. In response to command signals, the pump speed was changed in proportion to the absolute mean value of the speed component for position commands. At the same time, a pressure regulator was activated to maintain constant system pressure by precisely adjusting the pump speed with the swash plate angle fixed at the maximum. The conventional system consisting of a pressure-compensated variable displacement type pump is driven at a constant speed of 1,800rpm. By comparison, computer simulation and experimental results showed that idling power at stand-by status could be reduced by up to 70% by reducing the pump speed from 1,800rpm to 300rpm and the swash plate angle to the minimum.

유동제어평판을 가진 선박의 속도성능 향상에 관한 수치적 연구 (A Numerical Study for Improvement of the Speed-performance of a Ship with Flow Control Flat Plate)

  • The present study focused on evaluation for the performance of the Flow Control Flat Plate (FCFP) attached in the stern side of the ship. The important function of this FCFP is to enhance the resistance performance through the decrease of stern sinkage and the propulsive performance by the adjustment of inflow velocities in the propeller plane. Two different hull forms were considered to identify the effects of the FCFP. The attachment position, the angle and the size of the FCFP were studied in this numerical simulation. In this paper, the roles of the FCFP were intended to analyze fully through the numerical interpretation.
