  • Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to identify the wake characteristics downstream of two vane-type vortex generators over laminar flat plate boundary layer. Experimental study was carried out by using the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. To describe the flow field around the vortex generator in detail, numerical study was performed. We considered two different planform shapes of vortex generator: triangular and rectangular shape. The height of the generator was chosen to be about the boundary layer thickness at the position of its installation. Two different lengths of the generator were chosen: two and five times the height. Wake measurements were carried out at three angles of attack for each configuration. Wake characteristics for each case such as overall vortical structure, vorticity distribution, and location of vortex center with downstream distance were obtained from the PIV data. Wake characteristics, as expected, were found to vary strongly with the geometry and angle of attack so that no general tendency could be deduced. Causes of this irregular tendency were explained by using the results of the numerical simulation.

  • PICARD (Port-Interface Component Architecture for Real-time system Design) is a software architecture and environment, which is aimed to reduce development time and cost of real-time, control system. With PICARD, a control engineer can construct a control system software by assembling pre-built software components us ing interact ive graphical development environment. PICARD consists of PVM(Picard Virtual Machine) , a component library, and PICE(PIcard Configuration Editor). PVM is a real-time engine of the PICARD system which runs control tasks on a real-time operating system. The component library is composed of components which are called task blocks. PICE is a visual editor which can configure control tasks by creating data-flow diagrams of task blocks or Ladder diagrams for sequential logics. For the communication between PVM on a target system and PICE on a host computer, a simple protocol and tools for stub generation was dove]oped because RPC or CORBA is difficult to be applied for the embedded system. New features such as a byte-code based run time system and a simple and easy MMI builder are also introduced.

  • The synergistic effect of ethylene/propane and ethylene/methane mixtures on soot formation is studied experimentally with a concentric co-flow burner. The integrated soot volume fractions, laser light scattering signal and PAH concentrations are measured for different fuel supply configurations. The synergistic effect in ethylene/propane diffusion flames is found to be affected not only by the composition of mixture but also by the way of mixing. Comparing to the homogeneously mixed ethylene/propane case, the increase of soot formation is observed when propane is supplied through the inner nozzle, while the decrease is observed when propane is supplied through the outer nozzle. However, the measured PAH concentration distributions are inconsistent with the current view of the synergistic effect of ethylene./propane mixture on soot formation. Virtually no synergistic effect is observed in ethylene-methane flames regardless of the fuel supply configuration, which suggests the important role of $C_3$ species produced during the propane pyrolysis process for the synergistic effect.

  • An approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating hydrodynamic forces acting on oscillating inner cylinder in concentric annulus. When the rigid inner cylinder executes translational oscillation, fluid inertia and damping forces on the oscillating cylinder are generated by unsteady pressure and viscous skin friction. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow and the added mass coefficient of inviscid fluid, these hydrodynamic forces including viscous effect are dramatically simplified and expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number and the geometry of annular configuration. Thus, the viscous effect on the forces can be estimated very easily compared to an existing theory. The forces are calculated by two models developed for relatively high and low oscillatory Reynolds numbers. The model for low oscillatory Reynolds number is suitable for relatively high ratio of the penetration depth to annular space while the model for high oscillatory Reynolds number is applicable to the case of relatively low ratio. It is found that the transient ratio between two models is approximately 0.2~0.25 and the forcea are expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number, explicity. The present results show good agreements with an existing numerical results, especially for high and low penetration ratios to annular gap.

  • Self-excited noise generation from laminar flames in thin annular jets of methane/air premixture has been investigated experimentally. Various flames were observed in this flow configuration, including conical shape flames, ring shape flames, steady crown shape flames, and oscillating crown shape flames. Self-excited noise with the total sound pressure level of about 70dB was generated from the oscillating crown shape flames for the equivalence ratio larger than 0.95. Sound pressure and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured by using a microphone and a photomultiplier tube. The frequency of generated noise was measured as functions of equivalence ratio and premixture velocity. A frequency doubling phenomena have also been observed. The flame shape during flame oscillation was reconfirmed by a synchronized PIV experiment. The velocity and pressure field were obtained from PIV. The minimum pressure was formed near the edge of flame representing circulation. By comparing the results of sound pressure, flame luminosity and PIV, the noise source can be attributed to the flame front fluctuation near the edge of the oscillating crown-shape flames.

  • Flow-induced vibration in heat exchanger (or fuel rod) in nuclar power plant can cause dynamic interactions between tubes and tube supports resulting in fretting-wear. To increase the reliability and design life of heat exchanger components, design criteria that establish acceptable limits of vibration and minimize fretting wear are necessary. The fretting-wear rate is dependent upon material combination, contact configuration, environmental conditions and tube-to tube support dynamic interaction. It is demostrated that the fretting -wear rate correlates well with tube-to-support contact force or work rate. The tube-to-support dynamic interaction, which consists of dynamic contact forces and tube motion, is used to relate single-span wear data to real heat exchanger configurations consisting of multi-span tube bundles. This paper describes the test facility to measure tube-to-support dynamic impact force and reports its dynamic characteristics through the four impact tests - a force transduces independent and external impact tests, central ring inside impact test and additional cylinder impact test. Through the tests the impact parameter change dependent upon the material difference of impacting ball is studied, and the impact parameters of Force Transducer Assembly components are measured. And also the dynamic behavior of Force Transducer Assembly is analyzed. The force measurement technique herein is shown to provide a reasonable measure of dynamic contact forces.

  • Smart UAV, which adopting tiltrotor aircraft concept, requires vertical take-off and landing, long endurance and high speed capability. These contradictable flight performances are hard to meet unless the operation of flap system which should reveal optimal performance for each flight mode. In order to design SUAV flaperon satisfying the three performance requirements, various configurations are generated and their aerodynamic performances are analyzed using numerical flow computations around flap systems. Considering aerodynamic performance and structural simplicity, a final flap configuration is selected and the performance is validated through the wind tunnel testing for 40% scale model.

  • Computational study on the passive control of the oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing slotted plates over a cavity has been carried out. The numerical boundary layer profile upstream of the interaction follows the compressible turbulent boundary-layer theory reasonably well, and the other results also show good agreements with the experimental observations, such as the wall surface pressures and Schlieren flow visualizations. Further, the effects of various slot configuration including number, location and angle of the slots on the characteristics of the interactions, such as the variation of the total pressures, the boundary-layer characteristics downstream of the interaction and the recirculating mass flux through the slots, are also tested and compared.

  • Potential application of the scroll type machine to air compressor for fuel cell has been studied. Among the seven configuration factors which determine scroll wrap profile, the wrap thickness and the orbiting radius were chosen as two independent variables to generate various scroll wrap profiles. A conceptual design practice was conducted for scroll air compressor for SOFC with power output of 2 kW. With larger wrap thickness and orbiting radius, base plate area of the orbiting scroll becomes smaller, so is the axial gas force acting on the base plate, resulting in reduced thrust loss in spite of larger friction velocity. Performance analysis on the designed model showed that its total efficiency was 64.4% with the mass flow rate per unit compressor input of 0.00905 kg/(s kW) for the wrap thickness of 3.5 mm and the orbiting radius of 3.0 mm.
