A Study on the Flow Field Characteristics of Air Induction System for Reducing the Signal-to-Noise in the MAFS Output

  • This study presents the flow visualization results, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements made within an air filter cover and entry region of a mass air flow sensor (MAFS) which is used in an induction system of 3.8L engine. Flow structure in two air filter cover assemblies were examined. The first was a clear plastic replica of the production cover while the second was a modified clear plastic cover with a geometry configured to reduce fluctuations. High speed flow visualization and laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) systems were used to reveal and analyze the flow field characteristics encountered in the sensor design process under steady flow conditions. A 40-watt copper vapor laser was used as a light source. Its beam is focused down to a sheet of light approximately 1.5mm thick. The light scattered off the particles was recorded by a 16mm high speed rotating prism camera at 5000 frames per second. A comparison of the flow patterns and LDV measurements in the original and modified air filter covers is presented to illustrate the controlling effect of the cover design on the turbulence structure formation near the bypass and on the sensor output signal. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the turbulence flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air filter cover and main passage configuration.

CFD에 의한 선박용 DPF/DOC내 배기가스의 유동 균일도 및 특성 연구 (A Study on the Flow Uniformity and Characteristics of Exhaust gas in Diesel Particulate Filter/Diesel Oxidation Catalyst of Ship Diesel Reduction System by Computational Fluid Dynamics)

  • 디젤 선박 운행 횟수의 증가로 인한 대기오염이 심각해짐에 따라 선박의 유해배출가스에 대한 규제가 강화되고 있다. 따라서 선박용 디젤 배기 후처리 장치의 개발이 요구되고 배기 처리 장치는 유동 균일도가 높을수록 처리효율이 증가된다. 본 연구에서는 ANSYS Fluent를 이용하여 기존 저감장치, 저감장치 내부의 Baffle 설치시, 배기가스 유량에 따른 배압과 유동 균일도를 시뮬레이션 하였다. 기존 장치조건에서는 시스템 배압이 38 ~ 40 mbar로 나타났으며, 유동 균일도는 DOC 입구와 출구에서 약 84 ~ 92%로 나타났다. 시스템 내부에 Baffle을 설치한 경우 압력이 상승되고 유속 증가로 인해 유동 균일도가 낮아진다. 배기가스 유량을 $7,548kg\;h^{-1}$에서 $3,772kg\;h^{-1}$로 50% 감소했을 때, 낮은 유속에 의해 DOC 입구와 출구의 유동 균일도는 약 1 ~ 3% 증가했다. DPF의 경우 불균일한 유동이 DOC를 균일하게 거쳐 흐른 후 유입되기 때문에 유동 균일도가 98 ~ 99%로 높게 나타났다.

하나로 핵연료 시험 루프 주냉각수 계통의 유량 제어에 대한 유동 해석 (Flow Network Analysis for the Flow Control of a Main Cooling Water System in the HANARO Fuel Test Loop)

  • A nuclear fuel test loop(after below, FTL) is installed in the IRI of an irradiation hole in HANARO for testing the neutron irradiation characteristics and thermo hydraulic characteristics of a fuel loaded in a light water power reactor or a heavy water power reactor. There is an in-pile section(IPS) and an out-pile section(OPS) in this test loop. When HANARO is operated normally, the fuel loaded into the IPS has a nuclear reaction heat generated by a neutron irradiation. To remove the generated heat and to maintain the operation conditions of the test fuel, a main cooling water system(MCWS) is installed in the OPS of the FTL. The MCWS is composed of a main cooler, a pressurizer, two circulation pumps, a main heater, an interconnection pipe line and instruments. The interconnection pipeline is a closed loop which is connected to an inlet and an outlet of the IPS respectively. The MCWS is under a cold function test during a start-up period. This paper describes the system flow network analysis results of the flow control of a main cooling water system in the HANARO fuel test loop. It was confirmed through the results that the flow was met the system design requirements.

마이크로 관류수차의 상수도 관로시스템 적용에 관한 연구 (Application of Micro Cross-Flow Turbine to Water Supply System)

  • Recently, micro hydropower and it's useful utilization are taking a growing interest as a countermeasure of global worming by carbon dioxide and exhaustion of fossil fuel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of extracting micro hydropower wasted by a valve in water supply system using micro cross-flow hydraulic turbine. In order to fulfill the functions of controlling flow rate and pressure in substitute for the valve, air and water are supplied into an air suction hole which is installed on the side wall of micro cross-flow hydraulic turbine. The results show that in case of supplying a lot of air into the air suction hole, about 50% of flow rate and relatively high value of loss coefficient are controlled by the turbine. Moreover, including high possibility of applying the micro cross-flow turbine to water supply system, extended application of the turbine to the water discharge system of drainage and irrigation canal.

  • The T-s chart of air displays graphically the thermophysical properties, so it is very conveniently used in various thermal systems. In previous study, the software analyzing 31 kinds of values in water system and 32 kinds of values in air-conditioning system were developed. In this study, the software drawing 13 kinds of quantity of state on air properties as ideal gas and analyzing 25 kinds of values in any air system was developed. The 13 kinds of quantity of state on air properties are temperature, pressure, specific volume, specific internal energy, specific enthalpy, specific entropy, specific exergy, exergy ratio, density, isobaric specific heat, isochoric specific heat, ratio of specific heat, and velocity of sound, and the 25 kinds of values including 13 kinds are mass flow rate, volume flow rate, internal energy flow rate, enthalpy flow rate, entropy flow rate, exergy flow rate, heat flow rate, power output, power efficiency, reversible work, lost work, and relative humidity. The developed software can draw any range of chart and analysis any state or process on air system. Also, this supports various document-editing functions such as power point. We wish to this chart is a help to design, analysis, and education in air system field.

Surge Tank가 설치된 상수도관망에서 부정류를 고려한 불능확률 산정 (Calculation of Probability of System Failure for Pipe Network with Surge Tank regarding Unsteady Flow)

  • In the present study, a reliability analysis calculating the probability of system failure has been performed using cut set and results of numerical analysis for unsteady flow in pipe. Especially, the probability of system failure has been evaluated regarding the effect of valve closure which is a really important activity in operation of piping system. In spite of small amount of demand, it was found that fast valve closure can generate high probability of system failure. Furthermore, it was confirmed that surge tank can reduce the unsteady effects and probability of system failure in water distribution system. From the results, it was found that the unsteady flow has a significant effect on the probability of system failure Furthermore, it was able to find which pipe or cut set has high probability of system failure. So it could be used to determine which pipe or cut set has a priority of repair and replacement. Therefore, reliability analysis regarding unsteady flow has to be performed for the planning, designing, maintenance, and operation of piping system.

튜브 클리닝 시스템 내부의 유동 특성에 관한 수치해석적 연구 (The Numerical Analysis of Fluid Flow in the Tube Cleaning System)

  • The numerical analysis of fluid flow in the tube cleaning system is examined. The working flow used in this study is seawater, and the temperature change is not considered as the temperature change of seawater in the tube cleaning system is negligible. Also, the analysis is performed under the assumption of steady state. The screens of complicated morphologies are simplified for the analysis, and only one fourth of the tube cleaning system is modeled as the system has a symmetrical shape. The velocity inlet boundary condition is employed for the seawater inlet, whereas the outflow boundary condition is employed for two seawater outlets. In applying the outflow boundary condition for the system with more than two outlets, the flow rate can be arbitrarily assigned. In the analysis, the finite-volume method based numerical analysis tool, the pressure based solver, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model are utilized, and the under relaxation factor is modified appropriately. From the analysis, the distribution of velocity vectors, pressure and path lines are obtained, and the physical characteristics of fluid flow in the tube cleaning system is well-examined.

  • Automatic flow control system composed by hardware and software was designed and fabricated to be used as teaching tool of feedback control theory in university experimental class. This system includes hardwares like data acquisition board, flow measuring device, transmitters, and the pneumatic valve, and software like LabView program for the monitoring and control of flow rates. The system was designed as the student can see the control effect of not only set point but also disturbance changes. Also the LabView program was composed for the calculation of controller parameters of both Ziegler-Nichols and Cohen-Coon tuning. The students can apply both tuning constants and compare the control performances. This system will provide the easy way for the students to understand the function and specification of control hardwares, and to raise the programing ability of control software.

Network Analysis of Engine Lubrication System

  • A computer program fur the analysis of engine lubrication systems has been developed. And a case study of a four cylinders gasoline engine is illustrated. This paper gives the mathematical models far oil flow through hydraulic tappet as well as those of oil jet and plain journal bearings. And the flow from an oil pump and the flow resistance through an oil filter is considered at various temperatures. In the analysis, the various design guidelines are applied. The distribution of flow and pressure of an engine lubrication system are calculated, and the pressure data compared with the experimental data at a few points in the engine lubrication system. This method is helpful to design of engine lubrication system efficiently.
