The boiler tube failure often experienced in the superheater of a utility boiler can seriously affect the economic and safe operation of the power plant. It has been known that this failure is mainly caused by the thermal load deviation in the superheater tube system, and deeply intensified by the non-uniform distribution of steam flow rates. The nonuniform steam flow is distinctively prominent at low power load rather than at full power load. In this paper, we analyze the steam flow distribution in the superheater tube system by using one dimensional flow network model. At 30% power load, the deviation of steam flow rate is predicted to be within 0.8% of the averaged flow rate. This deviation can be reduced to 0.1% and 0.07% by assuming two cases, that is, the removal of 13th tube at each tube rows and the installation of intermediate header, respectively. The assumed two cases would be effective for the uniform steam flow distribution across 85 superheater tube rows.
The objective of the present study is to visualize the pulsatile flow fields by using three-dimensional computer simulation and the PIV system. A closed flow loop system was built for the steady and unsteady experiments. The Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile pressure and velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow field. Two consecutive particle images were captured by a CCO camera for the image processing at several cross section. The range validation and the area interpolation methods were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The finite volume predictions were used to analyze three-dimensional flow patterns in the bifurcation model. The results of the PIV experiment and the computer simulation are in good agreement and the results show the recirculation zones and formation of the paired secondary flow distal to the apex of the bifurcated model. The results also show that the branch flow is pushed strongly to the inner wall due to the inertial force effect and helical motions are generated as the flow proceeds toward the outer wall.
Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate tip clearance effect on through-flow and performance of a centrifugal compressor which has the same configuration of impeller with six different tip clearances. Secondary flow and loss distribution have been surveyed to understand the flow mechanism due to the tip clearance. Tip leakage flow strongly interacts with mainstream flow and considerably changes the secondary flow and the loss distribution inside the impeller passage. A method has been described to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance drop and the efficiency drop. The tip clearance has caused specific work reduction and additional entropy generation. The former, which is called inviscid loss, is independent of any internal loss and the latter, which is called viscous loss, is dependent on every loss in the flow passage. Two components equally affected the performance drop as the tip clearances were small, while the efficiency drop was influenced by the viscous component alone. The additional entropy generation was modeled with all the kinetic energy of the tip leakage flow. Therefore, the present paper can provide how to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance and efficiency.

This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.

The fluid flow for a energy transfer is essential for the design and operation of power plants, petrochemical plants and ships including a process. When the operating conditions of a plant are changed or any transitional event occured, the flow controls of a fluid must be performed to follow the new operating state or mitigate the results of a event. Generally these flow controls to accommodate the new operating state of a plant are made by the use of various valves. The refore the design of valves and the related techniques are very important to the system and component designs. However the system and component design are not familiar with the practical theory of the valve since the derivative procedures of the flow equations in a valve are difficult and it is not easy to found the theoretical foundamentals and informations about the design of a valve from the present references. In this study the flow equations applicable to a valve for liquid are theoretically derived in detail. And the definition of valve reynolds number and its boundary values between the tubulent and laminar flow is described compared with the values of a circular pipe flow.
In this study, we discussed the application of Watershed model and Load Duration Curves (LDC) in Total Water Load Management System. The Flow Duration Curves (FDC) and the LDC were generated using the results of the daily HSPF model and analyzed on monthly or yearly flow duration variability, and non-point pollutant discharge loads by entire flow conditions. As a result of the calibration and verification of the HSPF model, both the flow and the water quality were appropriately simulated. The simulated values were used to generate the Flow Duration Curve and the Load Duration Curve, and then the excess rate by entire flow conditions was analyzed. The point and non-point pollutant discharge loads for entire flow conditions were calculated. It is possible to evaluate the variability of water quality in specific flow duration through the curves reflecting the flow duration variability and to confirm the characteristics of the pollutant source. For a more scientific Total Water Load Management System, it is necessary to switch from a current system to a system that can take into account the entire flow conditions. For this, the application of the watershed model and load duration curve is considered to be the best alternative.

The objective of the present study is to visualize the steady and pulsatile flow fields in a branching model by using a high-resolution PIV system. A bifurcated flow system was built for the experiments in the steady and pulsatile flows. Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow fields. CCD cameras($1K{\times}1K$(high resolution camera) and $640{\times}480$(low resolution camera)) captured two consecutive particle images at once for the image processing of several cross sections on the flow system. The range validation method and the area interpolation method were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The results of the image processing clearly showed the recirculation zones and the formation of the paired secondary flows from the distal to the apex of the branch flow in the bifurcated model. The results also indicated that the particle velocities at the inner wall moved faster than the velocities at the outer wall due to the inertial force effects and the helical motions generated in the branch flows as the flow proceeded toward the outer wall. Even though the PIV images from the high resolution camera were closer to the simulation results than the images from the low resolution camera at some locations, both results of the PIV experiments from the two cameras generally agreed quite well with the results from the computer simulations. Therefore, instead of using the expensive stereoscopic PIV or 3D PIV system, the three-dimensional flow fields in a bifurcated model could be easily and exactly investigated by this study.
This paper presents improved GUI based analysis tool o( load flow of power system (or contingency. It is effective tool to facilitate the teaching and learning of load flow of power system. This software is the named of PFGUI(Power Flow GUI) that written in TooIBookII of Asymetrix. The PFGUI is friendly for study for power system operation and control because picture provide a better visualizing of relationships between input parameters and effects than a tabula type result. This PFGUI enables topology and the output data of load flow for line outages to be shown on same picture page. Users can input the system data for power flow on the the picture and can easily see the the result diagram of bus voltage, bus power, line flow. It is also observe the effects of different types of variation of tap, shunt capacitor, loads level, line outages. Proposed PFGUI has been studied on the Ward-Hale 6-Bus system.
This paper describes flow characteristics in a piping system having various duct shapes on refuse collecting system. A simulator for the refuse collecting system is designed to analyze the flow characteristics in the piping system. The simulator consists of an air intake, a waste chute, circular duct having various shapes, cyclone and turbo blower. The simulator has four different duct shapes: straight, curved, inclined and Y-shaped ducts. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis is introduced to analyze the pressure loss in the piping system. Throughout the numerical simulation, pressure loss obtained by numerical simulation has a good agreement with the results of experimental measurements. The selected length of curved and Y-ducts for the pressure loss is determined using pressure distributions on the duct. Flow and pressure characteristics in the piping system of the simulator are evaluated by numerical simulation and discussed in detail.

Numerical analysis information of a complex discharge-passage will be very useful to improve hydrogen compression system. General information about an internal gas flow is presented by numerical analysis approach. Relating with hydrogen compressing system, which have an important role in hydrogen energy utilization, this should be a useful tool to observe the flow quickly and clearly. Flow characteristic analysis, including pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution of hydrogen gas from cylinder going to the chamber of a reciprocating compressor are presented in this paper. Discharge-passage model is designed based on real model of hydrogen compressor. Pressure boundary conditions are applied considering the real condition of operating system. The result shows pressure and turbulence kinetic energy are not distributed uniformly along the passage of the hydrogen compressing system. Path line or particles tracks help to demonstrate flow characteristics inside the passage. The existence of vortices and flow direction can be precisely predicted. Based on this result, the design improvement should be done. Consequently, development of the better hydrogen compressing system will be achieved.
