The near-wall flow structures of turbulent boundary layer over riblets having semi-circular grooves were investigated experimentally for the drag decreasing ($s^+=25.2$) and drag increasing ($s^+=40.6$) cases. The field of view used for tho velocity field measurement was $6.75{\times}6.75mm^2$ in physical dimension, containing two grooves. One thousand instantaneous velocity fields over the riblets were extracted for each case of drag increase and decrease. For comparison, five hundreds instantaneous velocity fields over a smooth flat plate were also obtained under the same flow conditions. To see the global flow structure qualitatively, the flow visualization was also performed using the synchronized smoke-wire technique. For the drag decreasing case ($s^+=25.2$), most of the streamwise vortices stay above the riblets, interacting with the riblet tips. The high-speed in-rush flow toward the riblet surface rarely influences the flow inside tho riblet valleys submerged in the viscous sublayer. The riblet tips seem to impede the spanwise movement of the longitudinal vortices and induce secondary vortices. The turbulent kinetic energy in the riblet valley is sufficiently small to compensate the increased wetted area of the riblets. In addition, in the logarithmic region, the turbulent kinetic energy are small or almost equal to that of a smooth flat plato. For the drag increasing case ($s^+=40.6$), however, the streamwise vortices move into the riblet valley freely, interacting directly with the riblet inner surface. The penetration of the high-speed in-rush flow on the riblets increases tho skin-friction. The turbulent kinetic energy is increased in the riblet valleys and even in the outer region compared to that over a flat plate.
Despite of the laminar-turbulent transition region co-exist with fully turbulence region around the leading edge of an airfoil, still lots of researchers apply to fully turbulence models to predict aerodynamic characteristics. It is well known that fully turbulent model such as standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model couldn't predict the complex stall and the separation behavior on an airfoil accurately, it usually leads to over prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics such as lift and drag forces. So, we apply correlation based transition model to predict aerodynamic performance of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase IV wind turbine. And also, compare the computed results from transition model with experimental measurement and fully turbulence results. Results are presented for a range of wind speed, for a NREL Phase IV wind turbine rotor. Low speed shaft torque, power, root bending moment, aerodynamic coefficients of 2D airfoil and several flow field figures results included in this study. As a result, the low speed shaft torque predicted by transitional turbulence model is very good agree with the experimental measurement in whole operating conditions but fully turbulent model(k-${\varepsilon}$) over predict the shaft torque after 7m/s. Root bending moment is also good agreement between the prediction and experiments for most of the operating conditions, especially with the transition model.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides, diffuse-porous wood Anthocephalus cadamba and ring-porouswood Fraxinus rhynchophylla. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction, tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest among all cells considered in Anthocephalus cadamba and Fraxinus rhynchophylla In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest depth and the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.

The vacuum cleaner motor runs at very high speed for suction power. Specially, motor power is provided by the impeller being rotated at very high speed. The centrifugal fan consists of the impeller, the diffuser, and the circular casing. Due to the high rotating speed of the impeller and small gap distance between the impeller and the diffuser, the level of noise in the centrifugal fan is at BPF(Blade Passage Frequency) and its harmonic frequencies. In order to calculate the sound pressure of centrifugal fan, unsteady flow data are needed. The cause of noise is obtained by dividing the fluid noise by exhaust flow of fan and vibration noise by rotational vibration of vacuum cleaner fan motor. Until now, an accelerometer has been used to measure vibration. However, it can not measure vibration in some parts of brush and commutator because of motor construction and 3-D vibrating mode. This study was conducted to perform accurate analysis of vibration and aerodynamic sound for fan motor in a vacuum cleaner using a laser vibration analyzer. A silent fan motor can be designed using the data measured in this study.

This study is to figure out the speed of soil diffusion and shapes as well when landslide occurred. It was measured the speed and shapes of soil diffusion using installed indoor-simulation of a land slide. Standard sand was used to measure it and this measurement is following the moisture content of standard sand. The result of this experiment follows the moisture content; as the moisture content goes up, the area and speed of soil diffusion goes faster as well. As the average of records by the moisture content was analyzed, the area and speed of land slide are increased proportionally. The shape of diffusion is formed as fanwise. It depends on the moisture content as above; the speed was fast when the moisture content is high, and it was getting narrower and longer as the speed of diffusion was faster.

In the present experiments, vortical structures behind the hydrofoil trailing edge are visualized and analyzed as an elementary study for propeller singing phenomena. Two sorts of hydrofoil are selected for the measurement of shedding vortices. One was KH45 hydrofoil section and the other is KH45 with the truncated trailing edge that is positioned at X/C = 0.9523(C=chord length). Assuming the Strouhal number of 0.23, the shedding frequencies of vortices are extracted by analyzing the boundary layer thickness and the flow speed. The frequency distribution of shedding vortices is obtained with the variation of angle-of-attack while the flow speed is fixed to 8m/s. The truncation of the trailing edge makes the frequency of shedding vortices about 120Hz lower than that of original trailing edge and makes the vorticity value higher than the original trailing edge.
It is difficult to avoid measurement errors caused by the shading effect of the meteorological tower, which is used for wind resource assessment according to the IEC Standard. This paper presents a validation of the computational flow analysis results by comparing the results with the wind tunnel experiment conducted for Reynolds numbers in the $10^4$ to $10^5$ range, for the preparation of a database for use in an automatic method of correcting met-tower shading errors. A three-dimensional simulation employing the MP (Modified Production) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model predicted a wind speed deficit in the wake region according to minimum wind speed ratio, within an MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 2.4%.
Experimental and computational studies were performed to determine the effects of different blade designs on a flow pattern inside a double-spindle counter rotating mower deck. In the experimental study, two different blade models were tested by measuring air velocities using a forward-scatter LDV system. The velocity measurements were taken at several different azimuth and axial sections inside the deck. The measured velocity distributions clarified the air flow pattern caused by the rotating blades and demonstrated the effects of deck and blade designs. A high-speed video camera and a sound level meter were used for flow visualization and noise level measurement. In the computational works, two-dimensional blade shapes at several arbitrary radial sections have been selected for flow computations around the blade model. For three-dimensional computation applied a non-inertia coordinate system, a flow field around the entire three-dimensional blade shape is used to evaluate flow patterns in order to take radial flow interactions into account. The computational results were compared with the experimental results.
This paper presents an experimental investigation to visualize cross-sectional two-phase flow structure and identify liquid-gas interface for condensation of steam at a low mass flux in a slightly inclined tube using the axial-viewing technique, which permits to look directly into flow during condensation of steam. In this technique, two-phase flow is viewed along the axis of a pipe by locating a high-speed video camera in front of a viewer that is fitted at the outlet of the pipe. A short section of the pipe is illuminated and is recorded through the viewer, which is kept free of liquid by mildly introducing air. Experiments were conducted in a pipe of 19.05 mm in inner diameter at atmospheric pressure. Cross-sectional two-phase flow structure is obtained at a steam mass flux of $2.62kg/m^2s$ as a function of steam quality in the range from 0.5 to 0.9. The results show that stratified-wavy flow is a unique flow pattern observed in the scope of the present study. Condensate film thickness, stratification angle and void fraction were measured from the obtained flow structure images. Finally, heat transfer coefficient was calculated using the measurement data and discussed in comparison with existing correlations.
