Most fluid machines can be considered as periodic noise sources when operated under constant conditions, which allows for a frequency domain representation of the source and the associated acoustic field In the duct. In such a representation, the source is characterized by frequency-dependent values of both strength and impedance. Although knowledge of these values can be gained by either experimentation or by modeling, one-port acoustic characteristics of an in-duct source with high flow velocity, high temperature, and high sound level can be measured only by the multiload method using an overdetermined set of open pipes with different lengths as applied loads. However, the problem is that negative source resistances have been often measured. This paper reviews the possible causes of the problem, with reference to experimental and theoretical results, in an attempt to clarify the issue. A new interpretation is given for the violation of basic assumptions and the defect in the algorithm of multiload method. The major cause and mechanism of the problem is due to the violation of time invariance assumption of the source and the load impedance can seriously affect the final measured result of source impedance.
This study presents an impedance method of in-vitro characterization of the thrombotic potential of whole blood. Whole blood samples of 0.2 cc were put into a micro-cell with embedded three electrodes immediately after venepuncture at $37^{\circ}C$. Anti-coagulated blood samples were also collected for hematocrit and blood viscosity analyses. The rate of change of electron flow was measured, which indicates the inverse of the thrombotic potential. A sudden decrease in the rate of change of electron flow was observed at a time equal to approximately 110 seconds. This sudden decrease was significantly delayed in anti-coagulated samples. After the sudden decrease, the rate continued to decrease, reaching a minimum value in unadulterated samples while the change in the rate in the anti-coagulated ones was found rather moderate. Based on these preliminary findings, the present method may be of used as a new tool for the diagnosis of the thrombotic potential of whole blood.

A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

The patency rates of small diameter vascular grafts are disappointing because of the formation of thrombus and intimal hyperplasia. Among the various factors influencing the success of graft surgery, the compliance and the size of a graft are believed to be the most important physical properties of a vascular graft. Mismatch of compliance and size between an artery and a graft alters anastomotic flow characteristics, which may affect the formation of intimal hyperplasia. Among the hemodynamic factors influencing the development of intimal hyperplasia, the wall shear stress is suspected as the most important one. The wall shear stress distributions are experimentally measured near the end-to-end anastomosis models in order to clarify the effects of compliance and diameter mismatch on the hemodynamics near the anastomosis. The effects of radial wall motion, diameter mismatch and impedance phase angle on the wall shear rate distributions near the anastomosis are considered. Compliance mismatch generates both different radial wall motion and instantaneous diameter mismatch between the arterial portion and the graft portion during a flow cycle. Mismatch in diameter seems to be affecting the wall shear rate distribution more significantly compared to radial wall motion. The impedance phase angle also affects the wall shear rate distribution.

An increase in acoustic energy in a combustion chamber coupled with heat fluctuations from flame results in the occurrence of combustion instability. The assessment of combustion stability requires the prediction of acoustic energy variation by understanding the acoustical characteristics of flow boundaries in a combustion chamber. The present paper discusses about the characteristics of acoustic impedances at boundaries in terms of Strouhal number and summarizes theoretical analyses on the acoustic characteristics of injector-head-like configurations. Also, the details of the two-microphone measurement technique have been presented.

The estimations of distributed and joint-excited input power for Power Flow Analysis are accomplished in this paper. Using Fourier transform, the displacements of infinite structures are derived, and the input power of distributed excitation can be estimated. The obtained results compare the real input power with the estimation of input power. When the exciting force acts on the joint of coupled structures, it is estimating the power that is transferred to each structure. Appling this input power, the results of energy density and intensity of Power Flow Analysis can be compared with the classical solutions.

Most outdoor sounds go from sources relatively near the ground to receivers near the ground. When either source or receiver are near the ground, interference can occur between the direct sound and that reflected at the ground which travels a slightly longer path. The sound pressure at the receiver is very different depending on the state of ground surface i.e. ground impedance. Ground impedances could be characterized by the value of a single parameter, namely the flow resistivity of the ground surface. This study suggests the measurement method of the flow resistivity using two microphones and predicts the flow resistivities of various ground surfaces.

Electrical impedance tomography is a relatively new nondestructive imaging modality in which the internal conductivity distribution is reconstructed based on the injected currents and measured voltages through electrodes placed on the surface of a domain. In this paper, a fast iterative Gauss-Newton method is proposed to increase the spatial resolution as well as reduce the inverse computational time in the inverse problem, which could be applied to online binary mixture flow applications. To evaluate the reconstruction performance of the proposed method, numerical experiments have been carried out and the results are analyzed.

In this study, a new method that can estimate ICG data from a subject's both hands to measure Cardiac Output under convenient sensor environment. With this aim, a grip-type electrode was implemented to measure ICG. To improve the accuracy of measurement, the regression equation was extracted using multiple bio-parameters and our result was compared with the thoracic ICG equipment(Physio Flow$^{(R)}$, PF104D, Manatec Biomedical, France), which is being used in clinics. The subjects consist of 26 men and 4 women(age in $22.0{\pm}3.32$). They are no cardiac disease. Parameters available for regression model were used gender, BMI, MBP, LVET, dZ/dt(max), distance between the measured electrodes, body impedance, and PTT. As a result of analyzing the ICG measurement value on thorax and both hands, the correlation with stroke volume, heart rate, and cardiac output was $R^2$=0.853, $R^2$=0.958 and $R^2$=0.899, respectively.

The objective of this paper is to estimate the concentration distribution in flow field inside the pipeline based on electrical impedance tomography. Special emphasis is given to the development of dynamic imaging technique for two-phase field undergoing a rapid transient change. Nonlinearity-compensation extended Kalman filter is employed to cope with unexpected measurement uncertainty. The nonlinearity-compensation extended Kalman filter compensates for the influence of measurement uncertainty and solves the instability of extended Kalman filter. Extensive computer simulations are carried out to show that nonlinearity-compensation extended Kalman filter has enhanced estimation performance especially in the unexpected measurement environment.
