  • Forecasting of flood wave travel time is very important in terms of river management and operation. Recently, the hydrological environment of has changed due to the construction of multi-function weir in the river. It is necessary to analyze flood wave travel time, including hydraulic structures in the channel. The flood wave travel time according to the discharge and downstream water level operating conditions was analyzed using HEC-RASver5.0.3 which is capable a two-dimentional analysis. This study showed nonlinear characteristics of flood wave travel times due to increase of discharge and operating conditions. The results of this study will be helpful for the operation of multi-function weir as well as the river operation.

  • Gate operation of hydraulic structures is important for proper management in rivers. In this study, the characteristics of flood time were analyzed and predicted using the HEC-RAS model, which is capable of one-dimensional and two-dimensional connectivity analysis of the main points downstream of the Geum river. As a result, flood travel time was decreased once discharge increase and downstream water level rising. However, When the floodplain was overflowed, the arrival time increased due to the rapid increase of the river width. Also, the same condition, flood wave travel time at the major point was approximately twice as fast as water level rising travel time, indicating that waves progressed faster than actually water. Using the results of this study, it will be helpful in the river.

  • Hydraulic and hydrological flood routing methods are commonly used to analyze temporal and spatial flood influences of flood wave through a river reach. Hydrological flood routing method has relatively more simple and reasonable performance accuracy compared to the hydraulic method. Storage constant used in Muskingum method widely applied in hydrological flood routing is very similar to the travel time. Focusing on this point, in this study, we estimate the travel time from HEC-RAS results to estimate storage constant, and develop a non-linear regression equation for the travel time using reach length, channel slope, and discharge. The estimated flow by Muskingum model with storage constant of nonlinear equation is compared with the flow calculated by applying the HEC-RAS 1-D unsteady flow simulation. In addition, this study examines the effect on the weighting factor changes and interval reach divisions; peak discharge increases with the bigger weighting factor, and RMSE decreases with the fragmented division.

  • The floodwave propagation resulting from the earth dam-break is studied. DBF(Dam-Break Floodwave) model based on the dynamic wave equation is presented by introducing Preissmann scheme and double sweep algorithm. DBF model is applied to the Teton dam, and the numerical results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak elevation profile, the peak discharge, the flood travel time and the flooded area.

  • The types of dam-break have been classified as instantaneous and gradual failure. Equations for estimating the peak outflow have been derived respectively as a metric unit. New dimensionless routing curves have been deveoloped based on the distance parameter which has been used in SMPDBK and hydro-geometric characteristics of dams and reservoirs in Korea. These suggested curves can be used for any case of the flow of supercritical or subcritical. The computed peak flowrate shows the trend of decreasing dependence on the Froude numbers as it increases. These curves are applied to Hyogi dam. and the results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak discharges, peak elevations and flood travel time. The simplified dam-break model in this study would contribute effectively to forecast the dam-break flood in this country with minimum informations in a short time.
