  • Two-dimensional diffusion and kinematic hydrodynamic models have been studied for preparing the flood inundation map. The models have been tested by applying to one-dimensional dam-break problem. The results have good agreements compared with those of dynamic wave model. The diffusion wave model produces the mass conservation error close to zero. Floodwave analyses for two-dimensional floodplain with obstruction and channel-floodplain show both stable and efficient results. The model presented in this study can be used for flood inundation map and flood warning system.

  • It will be a real good news for the people who were lost their hometown by the construction of a large dam to be restored to the former state. Focused on Cheung-Pyung around where most part were flooded by the Chungju large Dam founded in early 1980s, we used Remote Sensing Technique in this study in order to restore topographical features before the flood with 3 dimensional effects. We gathered comparatively good satellite photos and remotely sensed digital images, then we made a new color image from these and the topographical map which had been made before the flood. This task was putting together two kinds of different timed images. And then, we generated DEM including the outskirts of that area as harmonizing current contour lines with the map. That could be a perfect 3D image of Cheung-Pyung around before when it had been flood by making perspective images from all directions, north, south, east and west, for showing there in three dimensions. Also, flying simulation we made for close visiting can bring us to experience their real space at that time.

  • This study was conducted in order to analyze a flooded area by the overflow of a stream using hydrological and hydraulic models and to estimate the utility of the SAR satellite image by comparing a protected lowland inundation area with a past inundation area map. The research area selected for this study is Sapkyocheon, which was flooded in August 1999. The flood stage was analyzed to select an inundation area by applying flood events in August 1999. By importing analyzed flood stage data into TIN data of WMS, the inundation area of a protected lowland was selected and then compared with an flood hazard map of WAMIS. An inundation area is selected by the SAR satellite image in comparing the image of August 4, 1999 (inundation time) with the image of September 8, 2002 (after inundation). The method of selecting an inundation area with the hydraulic model of HEC-RAS can be used to select an inundation area of external overflow, but it has the limit of selecting an inundation area concerning the internal drainage. The method of using the SAR satellite image can complement the limit of an inundation area of an internal drainage but accuracy of inundation area depends on using SAR satellite image acquired at time of maximum depth.

  • Flooding is one of the main causes of loss of lives and properties among various natural disasters in Korea. Flood risk maps are currently being produced in Korea but the progress is slow considering the necessity to map at nationwide scale. In this study, GIS-based multi-criteria decision making process which is normally used for resource management and site analysis was applied to locate flood vulnerable areas. Past records of flooding maps were analysed to extract topographic characteristics of flooded areas. The extracted characteristics were then set as criteria for flooding analysis using the Fuzzy and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) methodology. Results from this study showed that an improved phased action plan was possible, because the flood vulnerable areas are shown in varying degrees of uncertainty unlike the conventional Boolean type GIS layer superimposition analysis.

  • The important factors in a flood simulation are hydrologic data (such as the rainfall and intensity), a threedimensional terrain model, and the hydrologic inundation calculation matrix. Should any of these factors lack accuracy, flood prediction data becomes unreliable and imprecise. The three-dimensional terrain model is constructed based on existing digital maps, current map updates, and airborne LiDAR data. This research analyzes and offers ways to improve the model's accuracy by comparing flood weakness areas selected according to the existing data on flood locations and design frequency.

  • To assess the flood damages and to provide necessary information for preventing future catastrophe, it is necessary to appraise the inundated area with more accurate and rapid manner. This study attempts to evaluate the potential of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for mapping of flood inundated area in southern part of Korea. JERS L-band SAR data obtained during the summer of 1997 were used to delineate the inundated areas. In addition, Landsat TM data were also used for analyzing the land cover condition before the flooding. Once the two data sets were co-registered, each data was separately classified. The water surface areas extracted from the SAR data and the land cover map generated using the TM data were overlaid to determine the flood inundated areas. Although manual interpretation of water surfaces from the SAR image seems rather simple, the computer classification of water body requires clear understanding of radar backscattering behavior on the earth's surfaces. It was found that some surface features, such as rice fields, runaway, and tidal flat, have very similar radar backscatter to water surface. Even though satellite SAR data have a great advantage over optical remote sensor data for obtaining imagery on time and would provide valuable information to analyze flood, it should be cautious to separate the exact areas of flood inundation from the similar features.

  • In recent years, most of flood damage is associated with the levee failure. The objective of this study is to predict flow depths, flood area, flooding time and flood damage through flood inundation analysis considering the overflow of levee and the characteristics of levee failure. The hydrological parameters were extracted from GIS data such as DEM, land cover and soil map to estimate levee failure discharge. In addition, the characteristics of flood wave propagation could be accurately predicted as flood inundation analysis was accomplished considering the affection of structure within protected lowland and hourly prediction of flooded areas and estimation of flood strength will be utilized as basic data for the flood defence and establishment of measure to reduce flood damage.

  • Flood damage is one of the most important and influential natural disaster which has an effect on human beings. Local concentrated heavy rainfall in urban area yields flood damage increase due to insufficient capacity of drainage system. When the excessive flood occurs in urban area, it yields huge property losses of public facilities involving roadway inundation to paralyze industrial and transportation system of the city. To prevent such flood damages in urban area, it is necessary to develop adequate inundation analysis model which can consider complicated geometry of urban area and artificial drainage system simultaneously. In this study, an urban flood analysis model adopting the unstructured computational grid was developed to simulate the urban flood characteristics such as inundation area, depth and integrated with subsurface drainage network systems. By the result, we can make use of these presented method to find a flood hazard area and to make a flodd evacuation map. The model can also establish flood-mitigation measures as a part of the decision support system for flood control authority.
