  • It was reviewed for the 2D numerical simulations to evaluate the effects of flood control by detention basin, even if stage-discharge relationships for the side weir were not known. A 2D depth-integrated numerical model was constructed by the application of the finite volume method to the shallow water equations as a numerical method and the introduction of an approximate Riemann solver for the accurate calculation of fluxes. Results by the model were compared with those by the laboratory test for the cases of free overflow and submerged flow over a side weir between the channel and storage. The difference between simulated and measured discharge coefficients for the case of free overflow is very small. In addition, the results by simulations were in good agreement with those by experiments for the submerged flow over a side weir and its mechanism was reproduced well. Through this study the discharge coefficients of side weirs can be accurately determined by the 2D numerical model and a considerable degree of accuracy can be achieved to evaluate the effect of flood defenses by detention basins. Thus, it will be expected to apply this model practically to the plan of detention basins, the evaluation of design alternatives, or the management of the existing ones.

  • In this study, a time-dependent aspect of an embankment failure is considered to simulate a flood inundation map and calculate overtopping discharge induced by an embankment failure. A numerical model has been developed by solving the two dimensional nonlinear shallow water equations with a finite volume method on unstructured grids. To analyze a Riemann problem, the HLLC approximate Riemann solver and the Weighted Averaged Flux method are employed by using a TVD limiter and the source term treatment is also employed by using the operator splitting method. Firstly, the numerical model is applied to a dam break problem and a sloping seawall. Obtained numerical results show good agreements with experimental data. Secondly, the model is applied to a flow induced by an embankment failure by assuming that the width and elevation of embankment are varied with time-dependent functions. As a result of the comparison with each numerical overtopping discharge, established flood inundation discharges in the previous studies are overestimated than the result of the present numerical model.

  • This study estimates the pollution load in a basin by regional groups analyzing the relationship between the discharge and pollution load. The study area is placed in the Miho stream basin known as the main tributary of the Kum river. Four major Telemetary streamflow stations are chosen. In this research, discharge and water quality in a dry season and a flood season from the observed discharge in the stream are analyzed. The Rating-Curve and the Pollutograph are drawn analyzing discharge and water quality at the major stations. The characteristics of runoff for each stream are analyzed and the change of water quality are analyzed for rainfall period. The relationship between discharge and water quality has been investigated. The relationship between the discharge and pollution load is analyzed and a representative equation is derived. These relationships permit an estimates of the pollution load at the Miho stream basin. basin.

  • In this study, a numerical particle tracking experiment was conducted to assess the distribution characteristics of freshwater exclusion resulting from the discharge of Gahwa Stream into Sacheon, Jinju, and Gangjin bays, located downstream of the Namgang Dam. The number of particles discharged into Noryang Channel, Daebang Channel, and Changseon Strait was compared by releasing 1000 particles through Gahwa Stream under three discharge conditions: no discharge, discharge during rainfall, and discharge during flood. Evidently, the percentage of particles in the Noryang Channel increased, whereas that in the Daebang Channel decreased as the discharge from the Gahwa Stream increased. Approximately 95% of the material located downstream of the Gahwa Stream generally escaped through the Daebang Channel. However, as the discharge from the Namgang Dam increased due to rainfall, the percentage of particles in the Noryang Channel increased, reaching 45.5% during floods.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of dual-polarization radar rainfall by comapring with the flood inundation record map through KIMSTORM(Grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model). For Namgang dam ($2,293km^2$) watershed, the Bisl dual-polarization radar data for 3 typhoons (Khanun, Bolaven, Sanba) and 1 heavy rain event in 2012 were prepared. For both 28 ground rainfall data and radar rainfall data, the model was calibrated using observed discharge data at 5 stations with $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (ME) and Volume Conservation Index (VCI). The calibration results of $R^2$, ME and VCI were 0.85, 0.78 and 1.09 for ground rainfall and 0.85, 0.79, and 1.04 for radar rainfall respectively. The flood inundation record areas (SY and MD/SG district) by typhoon Sanba were compared with the distributed modeling results. The spatial distribution by radar rainfall produced more surface runoff from the watershed and simulated higher stream discharge than the ground rainfall condition in both SY and MD/SG district. In case of MD/SG district, the stream water level by radar rainfall near the flood inundation area showed 0.72 m higher than the water level by ground rainfall.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a method for quantitative analysis of flooding at the flood plain in an ungauged area using satellite rainfall and global geographic data. For this, flooding of the Tumen/Namyang area in the Duman-gang(Riv.) was simulated and the flood conditions were quantitatively analyzed. The IMERG data, a rainfall data derived from satellite images, was used as rainfall data. The GRM model was applied to the watershed runoff simulation, and the G2D model was applied to the flooding simulation of the Tumen/Namyang area. Flood event caused by Typhoon Lionrock in August 2016 was applied. Recorded peak discharge of the Tumen/Namyang region was used to verify the runoff simulation results. To verify the result of the inundation simulation, the flood situation collected through field survey and satellite image data before and after the flood were used. The peak flow rates by the runoff simulation and flood record were 7,639㎥/s and 7,630㎥/s, respectively, with a relative error of about 0.1%. In the flood simulation, the results were similar to the flooding ranges identified in the survey data and satellite images. And the changes of flooding depth and flooding time in the flood plain in Tumen/Namyang area could also be assessed. The methods and results of this study will be useful for the quantitative assessment of floods in the ungauged areas.

  • To reduce the damage of extreme flooding caused by climate change and to create flood mitigation sections in a nature-friendly riparian area, it is necessary to restore the floodplain area by referring to the past floodplain section of the current inland waterfront area before the levee was built. This study proposed a method of selecting a location for floodplain restoration using old maps of the Geum River study section and analyzed the effect of flood level reduction through unsteady flow numerical simulations using the floodplain as a flood mitigation space. As a result of analyzing changes in the river areas using old maps, the river section was estimated to gradually reduce by 27.8% (1,059,380 m2) in 2020 compared to 1919, and it was found to have an effective storage capacity of 2,200,868 m3 when restored to offline storage. The flood level and discharge control effects analyzed based on HEC-RAS unsteady flow simulation were 16 cm and 219.01 m3/s, respectively, in the downstream cross-section. In the numerical simulation in this paper, the flood mitigation space was applied as an offline reservoir. The effect of reducing the flood level may differ if levee retreat/relocation is applied.

  • Water surface velocity meters with microwave were applied to stream discharge measurements and its practical aspects were evaluted. The rating of the surface velocity meters was performed through a carriage and a water tank for the ship model test. It gave5.5% or less errors of average measured velocities under the vertical tilt ang1e of 20$^{\circ}$, 35$^{\circ}$, or 45$^{\circ}$ . A surface velocity meter was used to measure flood velocities at Yoju bridge from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on August 26, 1995. The results showed that surface velocities ranged from 2 to 4 m/s. With the measured surface velocities multiplied by 0.85, the discharge was computed as 10,500 m$^3$/s. It differed $\pm$2% or less from the value of a stage-discharge curve and that of an unsteady flow simulation. Although the measured data are used sparsely per 40 or 60 meters, the computed discharges do not give large variation. Stream discharge measurements were also performed under the normal condition without floods. With the known values of Taechong Dam releases. the depth averaging factors of velocity were calculated by 0.83~0.87. Although there are errors from wind action and inherent ones in the velocity meters, the research showed that surface velocity meters could be an simple and practical alternative for flood discharge measurements.

  • There is a big difference of discharge rate between drought and flood period in Korea since the importance of water resources management has come to the fore. To know a river characteristics, it needs to estimate river discharge accurately. River discharge is calculated using the measured velocity of cross section and the estimated area of watercourse as input parameters into continuity equation. Generally, flow rate over a river is estimated from the relation equation between level and discharge, in this case, there are weakness for only the equal depths and the equal discharge estimated. In the present study, therefore, water surface slope was estimated using measured water level of Seongseo water level observation station and measured water level using ADVM at Gangchang Bridge. And then, we developed the discharge calculation equation using water surface slope. A method to easily calculated flow rate from the measured depth of the two points that are suggested by reflecting water surface slope because natural stream is unsteady flow, not uniform flow or not steady flow.

  • The purpose of this study is complementing existing flood-reaching timetable by theoretically determined numerical model and suggesting techniques for calculating the exact arrival time of flood. For this, according to the discharge of Namhan River, arrival time measurements, using u-IT technology applied sensor buoys, were performed. Based on the results of measurements, this study proposed complementary relation of average reach time by the discharged water considering tributary inflow, which was not considered established expression. With this study, u-IT based actual technology that is complementing the existing flood forcasting-warning data was developed. Applying this technology to the average reach time calculation by the discharged water, it is expected to reduce flood-oriented damage.
