  • The steady state performance of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearings is analyzed with isothermal finite bearing theory. The effect of counterrotating speed of the sleeve on the performance of the bearing is investigated. It is shown that counterrotating floating ring journal bearings can have considerable load capacity at the same counterrotating speeds, while conventional circular journal bearings with one fluid film cannot. Investigating the relationship between the frictional torques exerted on the ring due to the inner and outer films and the rotational speed of the ring, the stability of the equilibrium state is identified and the operating characteristics of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearing according to the method of acceleration or deceleration of the rotational speeds of the journal and sleeve are clarified. It is theoretically confirmed that floating ring journal bearings can be used in counterrotating journal-bearing system and become good substitutes for rolling bearings in counterrotating systems.

  • The performance of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearing is analysed with isothermal finite bearing theory. The effect of counterrotating speed of the sleeve on the performance of the bearing is investigated. It is shown that counterrotating floating ring journal bearings properly designed can have considerable load capacity at the same counterrotating speed, while conventional circular journal bearing with one fluid film cannot. Investigating the relationship between the frictional torques on the ring due to the inner and outer films and the rotational speed of the ring, the stability of the equilibrium state is identified and the operating characteristics of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearing according to the method of acceleration or deceleration of the rotational speeds of the journal and sleeve are clarified. • The floating ring journal bearing is attraction for high-speed turbo machinery applications, including turbochargers and aircraft accessory equipment, because it is not only simple and easy to make and to replace in the field but also it seems to have adequate high speed stability characteristics. Therefore, an analysis method of dynamic properties of floating ring journal bearing is presented. The static equilibrium locus of inner film and outer film are calculated by using the impedance description. The equivalent stiffness and damping coefficients of floating ring journal bearing are composed by using the equilibrium of torque between inner film and outer film. Then, a stability analysis of turbocharger shaft system supported with floating ring journal bearing has been performed.

  • Turbocharger has a main purpose on recycling of the exhaust gas from the engine cylinder. On the basis of the facility characteristics, the turbocharger supported on floating ring bearings has some problems such as the large volume, oil supplement for lubrication and high power loss due to high operating torque. The air foil bearing has been studied as the bearing element to be able to alternate the floating ring bearing without the problems of the floating ring bearing. In this study, the air foil bearing has 2 parts; journal and thrust bearings, and the test facility consists of the engine, exhaust and intake parts. In addiction, the specification of the turbocharger follows a small turbocharger for SUV engine. The engine speed is varied from 750 (idle rpm) to 2,500 rpm and then, the rotating speed of the turbocharger rotor is accelerated from 0 to 100,000 rpm. From those experiments, the comparison between the performances of the air foil bearing and floating ring bearing is conducted and the results show that the air foil bearing has less power loss, maximum 770 watt, than the floating ring bearing, maximum 5,110 watt. This result verifies that the air foil bearing is more efficient and able to output more power under the same condition of the input power.

  • In this work the effect of pressure drop at inner film due to centrifugal forces acting on the lubricating fluid is investigated for static and dynamic characteristics of floating ring journal bearing. The momentum effect of oil supply into a inner film through oil feeding holes of floating ring on the bearing performance is also studied. It is compared the pressure drop effects and the momentum effect of oil supply into a inner film fur all bearing performance parameters. It is shown that some performance of floating ring bearings can be controled by the momentum of oil supply into a inner film.

  • The stability of the flexible rotor mounted on circumferentially grooved floating ring journal bearings was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The floating ring journal bearing was analyzed by using JFO reformation boundary condition. The flexible shaft was analyzed by the finite element method based on Rayleigh beam theory. It was found that the measured ring speed agrees well with the theoretical results. The instability of the system due to not only the outer film but also the inner film of the bearing could be predicted by the theory which allows negative vapor pressure. The tendency that reducing the supply pressure of lubricant stabilizes the system was observed both experimentally and theoretically.

  • Many commercial high speed and lightly loaded rotating machineries incorporate floating ring bearings (FRBs) owing to their low cost and reduced power losses. Many researchers have developed various analytical models to predict the performance and the stability of those rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. However, most of the models failed to predict stability of the rotor-bearing systems with FRBs. FRBs comprise two fluid films in series and the ratio of floating ring speed to journal speed reflects the equilibrium state of the two fluid films. Therefore the speed ratio is one of the main concerns in the analysis of FRBs. This paper provides the experimental results of the speed ratio which enables one to verify of the analysis model for FRBs.

  • Recently rotating machines have became high speed and high Power and light weight. Bearings are one of the main components which influence power loss and stability of rotating machines. Appropriate bearing should be selected with considering characteristics of rotating machine. Floating ring journal bearing(FIB) consists of an inner film and outer film, and possess high damping and stability. FJB has been for adopted into turbocharger for the high stability at high operating speed. (omitted)

  • In this paper, the thermal effects on the performance of floating ring journal bearing are investigated theoretically. The numerical analyses include pressure drop at inner film due to a centrifugal force, fluid momentum effects of supply oil into inner film and thermal effects in lubricating films. All performance data are presented as the rotating speed of journal from 10,000 rpm to 70,000 rpm.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of rotor-bearing system using a hybrid method to compute the solutions of optimization problem. The present hybrid algorithm namely Enhanced Artificial Life Algorithm(EALA), is a synthesis of an artificial life algorithm(ALA) and the random tabu search(R-tabu) method. We applied EALA to the optimum design of rotor-shaft system supported by the floating ring journal bearings. we will propose the optimum shape of rotor, position and shape of bearings. Through this study, we investigate the reliability and usefulness of EALA.
