  • The hydrophobic interaction between tetraphenylborate (TPB$^-$) or tetrakis (4-fluorophenyl)borate (TFB$^-$) and crystal violet has been investigated in aqueous solutions by absorption spectrophotometry. Both of the anions promote the aggregation of the ion pairs formed between crystal violet and TPB$^-$ or TFB$^-$. When crystal violet and borate anion are nearly equimolar, insoluble floating aggregates can be observed. Based on the relative absorbance of H and J bands and on the effect of TX-100, TFB$^-$ is found to be more hydrophobic than TPB$^-$.

  • The fine aggregates of below 2 mm size was fabricated using by the vertical furnace in which the aggregates could be sintered at floating state and its physical properties were analyzed. The liquid formed at the surface of specimens sintered at $1200{\sim}l300^{\circ}C$ induced a gas in core to expand so the denser shell and porous core could be produced. The C series specimen fabricated by crushing an extruded body had an irregular shape and sharp edges but those became spheroidized by bloating due to gas expansion inside. The fine aggregates fabricated in this study was as light as floating in the water and had an apparent density of $0.68{\sim}1.08$. The absorption rate was proportioned to a porosity showing that the pores in core was not closed completely. The properties of fine aggregates fabricated in vertical furnace were similar with those of in an electric muffle furnace but the sticking-together phenomenon by surface fusion was not occurred in the vertical furnace. The aggregates fabricated in this study had a little lower impact resistance than that of natural aggregate but satisfied the unit volume weight standard specified in KS.

  • Mn - Zn Ferrite has physical properties of the high initial permeability, saturation magnetic flux density, and low loss factor as a representative magnetic material of soft ferrites, in addition the mechanical property is excellent as a single crystal. Therefore it is important electronic components and used for VTR Head. Mn - Zn Ferrite single crystals with the diameter 8mm were grown in atmosphere mixed with $O_2$ and Ar gas by the Floating Zone(FZ) method that impurities can not be incorporated to the crystals because of not-using the crucible to put in the melt, and the sharp temperature gradient results from making a focus at one point utilizing the infrared ray emitted from the halogen lamp as a heat source. During the crystal growing, the highest temperature of melting area was maintained to be $1650^{\circ}C$, growth rate and rotation rate were 10 mm/hr, 20 rpm respectively. The phases and the growth directions of crystals were determined from the analysis of X RD patterns, Laue, TEM diffraction patterns and etch pit shapes were observed by the optical microscope through the chemical etching. The corelation of optimum conditions for acquiring the better crystals was found out with the growth rate, the length and diameter of melt at the interface according to the diameter of feed rod, and the patterns of growing interface also studied.

  • Abstract 0.2 wt % $Fe_2O_3$ doped $SrTiO_3$ single crystals were grown by floating zone method in air and Nz atmosphere, respectively. The growth rate was fixed at 5 mm/hr and rotation speed was maintained at 30 rpm. As - grown crystals were cut perpendicular to its growth direction and then, annealed at 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in Nz atmosphere. Resistivities of each samples were measured and then converted into conductivities. By using these conductivity values, the activation energies were calculated and by means of the calculated activation energies, mechanism which contribute to increasing the electrical conductivity were investigated.

  • Morphology of methane/propane clathrate hydrate crystal was investigated under different undercooling conditions. After the water pressurized with compound guest gas was fully saturated by agitation, medium within the vessel was rapidly undercooled and maintained at the constant temperature while the visual observations using microscope revealed detailed features of subsequent crystal nucleation, migration, growth and interference occurring within liquid pool. The growth of hydrate was always initiated with film formations at the bounding surface between bulk gas and liquid regions under all tested experimental conditions. Then a number of small crystals ascended, some of which settled beneath the hydrate film. When undercooling was relatively small, some of the settled crystals slowly grew into faceted columns. As the undercooling increased, the downward growth of crystals underneath the hydrate film became dendritic and occurred with greater rate and with finer arm spacing. The shapes of the floating crystals within liquid pool were diverse and included octahedron and triangular or hexagonal platelet. When the undercooling was small, the octahedral crystals were found dominant. As the undercooling increased, the shape of the floating crystals also became dendritic. The detailed growth characteristics of floating crystals are reported focused on the influences caused by undercooling and memory effect.

  • Iron-doped LiNbO$_3$ crystals were grown by floating zone(FZ) method with different [Li]/[Nb] ratio in order to investigate doping effects of transition metal impurity in LiNbO$_3$ crystal. The grown crystals were analyized edge in UV/VIS/IR spectrometry and EPMA(electron probe micro-analysis). The absorption edge in UV-VIS region and OH-absorption peak in IR region were investigated. The change of Fe concentration along the solidification direction was also investigated

  • Single crystals of the peritectic compound MgTiO3 up to 8 m diameter and 100mm long along the [1010] axis. were yon by the travelling solvent floating zone technique using a halogen lamp image furnace. The grown single crystal. which shows a solid solution range at high temperature, exsolves TiO2 component if it is annealed very slowly to room termperature. Grown boules were black but become translucent with pinkish brown color after tempering at 1100 t for 8-10 hours in oxygen atmosphere and showed distint chatoyancy along the (0001) plane. The grown crystal can be used as a new modified cat's eye gemstone. The optimum conditions were as follows ;Sintering temperature of the charge rod, 1300℃ the growth rate, 2-2.5mmh and the composition of the charge rod in molar ratio. MgO : TiO2 : 1:1.05.

  • Many concepts of external magnetic field applications in crystal growth processes have been developed to control melt convection, impurity content and growing interface shape. Especially, travelling magnetic fields (TMF) are of certain advantages. However, strong shielding effects appear when the TMF coils are placed outside the growth vessel. To achieve a solution of industrial relevance within the framework of the $KRISTMAG^{(R)}$ project inner heater-magnet modules(HMM) for simultaneous generation of temperature and magnetic field have been developed. At the same time, as the temperature is controlled as usual, e.g. by DC, the characteristics of the magnetic field can be adjusted via frequency, phase shift of the alternating current (AC) and by changing the amplitude via the AC/DC ratio. Global modelling and dummy measurements were used to optimize and validate the HMM configuration and process parameters. GaAs and Ge single crystals with improved parameters were grown in HMM-equipped industrial liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) puller and commercial vertical gradient freeze (VGF) furnace, respectively. The vapour pressure controlled Czochralski (VCz) variant without boric oxide encapsulation was used to study the movement of floating particles by the TMF-driven vortices.

  • Four valence of Chromium ion doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet crystals were grown by Floating Zone and Czochralski methods. Changes of valence for Chromium (3+) ion to Chromium (4+) were achieved by substitution of Yttrium ion in dodecahedral site to Calcium and by substitution of Aluminum in octahedral site to Magnesium. Growth conditions for high quality of crystals were investigated. Grown crystals were cut and polished and then observed various types of defects. Characterizations by means of measurement of density and lattice parameter as a function of solidification fraction were performed. Results of Q-switching test using grown crystals were also reported.
