  • The floating ring seal has the ability of minimizing clearance without rubbing phenomenon. However, the seal ring can be unstable due to extremely high lock-up eccentricity ratio arisen from the poor design of height and surface finish of the ring. The exact prediction of the lock-up position of the floating ring is necessary to design the floating ring properly. The governing equations are developed and solved numerically. The test facility for the measurement of the boundary-lubrication-friction coefficient of the ring‘s surface has been established. Based on the results of analysis, the geometric conditions of the floating ring seal are suggested for operating at a low lock-up eccentricity ratio.

  • Using the SWOT-AHP method, this study identifies the priorities in the development of floating solar photovoltaics (PV) and suggests possible strategies. Our study analyzed the priorities in planning future solar PV strategies based on the opinions of 27 experts. Our results indicate that the government should expand support while emphasizing the benefit of floating solar PV in that it causes less environmental damage compared to onshore solar PV. In addition, the government should properly deal with the public-private conflict regarding the installation of floating solar PV. Floating solar PV itself has not reached a mature technological and institutional stage, but could be an option or alternative for saturated onshore solar PV facilities in Korea.

  • Fluid model based numerical analysis is done to simulate a plasma processing system with electrodes at floating potential. $V_f$ is a function of electron temperature, electron mass and ion mass. Commercial plasma fluid simulation softwares do not provide options for floating electrode boundary value condition. We developed a user subroutine in CFD-ACE+ and compared four different cases: grounded, dielectric, zero normal electric field and floating electric potential for a 2D-CCP (capacitively coupled plasma) with a ring electrode.

  • A floating-strike lookback call option gives the holder the right to buy at the lowest price of the underlying asset. Similarly, a floating-strike lookback put option gives the holder the right to sell at the highest price. This paper will derive explicit pricing formulas for these floating-strike lookback options with flexible monitoring periods. The monitoring periods of these options start at an arbitrary date and end at another arbitrary date before maturity.

  • This paper investigates and compares the natural modes and static reponses of moduled and one-bodied floating structures. Equations for calculating natural modes and static responses are formulated by finite element method and the natural modes are solved by subspace iteration method. A floating parking place whose length is 120 m and width 60 m is considered as an example structure.

  • In this paper, a computer simulation technique for the forging process having a floating die is presented. The penalty rigid-plastic finite element method is employed together with an iteratively force-balancing method, in which the convergence is achieved when the floating die part is in force equilibrium within the user-specified tolerance. The force balance is controled by adjusting the velocity of the floating die in an automatic manner. An application example of a three-stage cold forging process is given.

  • Floating sleepers in a ballasted track increase both track deterioration and track irregularities. Consequently, a considerable maintenance work is required and maintenance cycle is shortened due to the floating sleepers. This paper quantifies the degrees of void between the floating sleepers and a ballast bed. In the future, the influence of floating sleepers on the track will be investigated by an analytical method using a dynamic model.

  • A numerical scheme is proposed which is applicable to the evaluation of wave field containing floating structures, and the method is utilized to estimate the effect of the floating breakwaters to be installed in Wonjeon port near Masan. The model is based on the mild-slope equation which is widely accepted for the calculation of wave modulation near shores and an additional term is introduced to consider the wave scattering associated with the thin floating structures such as floating breakwaters. The tranquility in Wonjeon port with the floating breakwater in the east side is calculated and compared with the one with a bottom-fixed breakwater. The present method is believed to provide an efficient way of quantitative measurement of the performance of floating breakwaters.

  • Considering a rigorously fluid-structure interaction, a method for an earthquake response analysis of a floating offshore structure subjected to vertical ground motion from a seaquake is developed. Mass, damping, stiffness, and hydrostatic stiffness matrices of the floating offshore structure are obtained from a finite-element model. The sea water is assumed to be a compressible, nonviscous, ideal fluid. Hydrodynamic pressure, which is applied to the structure, from the sea water is assessed using its finite elements and transmitting boundary. Considering the fluid-structure interaction, added mass and force from the hydrodynamic pressure is obtained, which will be combined with the numerical model for the structure. Hydrodynamic pressure in a free field subjected to vertical ground motion and due to harmonic vibration of a floating massless rigid circular plate are calculated and compared with analytical solutions for verification. Using the developed method, the earthquake responses of a floating offshore structure subjected to a vertical ground motion from the seaquake is obtained. It is concluded that the earthquake responses of a floating offshore structure to vertical ground motion is severely influenced by the compressibility of sea water.
