  • Purpose: This paper presents graphic methods and desirability function approach to determine best vibration reducing configuration for Surion helicopter. Many flight tests were executed and nine vibration levels in cockpit, cabin, and engine room were measured in each test and analyzed to find optimal configuration. Methods: Graphic analysis methods such as matrix, scatter, and box plots are used to identify better vibration-reducing flight test conditions. As an integrated measure of the performance of 9 vibration levels desirability function approach is adopted. Results: Three vibration reducing configurations are found to be proper and one configuration is recommended. Conclusion: It is expected to be helpful to adopt graphic and desirability function methods presented in this paper in developing new products or systems like helicopters. For efficient and effective flight testing of helicopters, it will be necessary to have consistently homogeneous environment for flight testing and applying design of experiments techniques and analyzing test data.

  • When the ground subsystem of Ground Based Augmentation System(GBAS) is installed at the airport, the functions and performance of subsystem should be evaluated through ground and flight testing at the pre-commissioning phase. In the case of GBAS flight testing, it can be conducted by the existing flight check aircraft, but the GBAS ground testing requires the development of specially customized equipment to perform the ground testing. Therefore, this paper describes the preliminary design of GBAS onboard test equipment which can be independently used for the GBAS ground testing and flight testing on a car and an aircraft.

  • As demands for high speed sea transportations have recently been increased, various high speed ships appear. Among them the WIG is believed to be one of the next generation of the sea transportation system. Test flight of the 20 seaters WIG craft, Haenarae-X1, developed by MOERI was a success in August, 2007. Development of the large WIG is now ongoing, and it is expected to be commercialized in the near future. In this study we designed a remote controled WIG Craft and carried out its performance test in order to establish engineering design procedures of an Unmanned WIG (U-WIG) craft.

  • It is important during FSD(Full Scale Development) period to verify whether the aircraft system function meets the aircraft requirements and functional performance. Especially, the functionality of the integrated propulsion system should be verified to evaluate the compatibility with aircraft. Various flight tests such as the engine airstart test, the engine horsepower extraction test, the backup throttle functionality test had been performed to evaluate the engine/aircraft compatibility with T-50 during FSD period. Through such flight tests, it was confirmed that the propulsion system of T-50 was properly designed and installed to the aircraft. This paper shows description on each flight test item, test procedure and test results. It is expected that this paper could be a reference for preparing the propulsion flight test in other aircraft developments.

  • This paper proposes an attitude determination GPS/INS integrated system scheme for a UAV and presents experimental flight test results. The proposed system is designed as a part of an autopilot system and comprises a GPS attitude determination receiver, an off-the-shelf inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a navigation computer unit (NCU). UAV requires accurate attitude information for stable automatic flight control. The proposed system can provide accurate attitude information for the flight control computer (FCC) so that stable automatic flight control can be achieved. In order to verify the performance of the proposed scheme, an integrated navigation system has been developed. In order to evaluate the developed navigation system, the flight test has been performed. In the flight test, the developed system was shown to provide the position, the velocity and the attitude satisfactorily enough for stable flight control. The accuracy of the attitude information of the developed system was confirmed by comparing attitude of vertical gyro.

  • The KASS development project, a Korean SBAS launched in 2014, is under development for the APV-1 Class SOL service in 2022. Flight tests should be conducted to analyze development requirements and performance requirements for KASS R & D. However, since the evaluation items have not yet been presented in Korea, FAA and ICAO regulations should be analyzed so that evaluation items for flight testing for KASS development should be structured and comply with international standards. In this paper, we analyze the procedure verification of SBAS for flight test using satellite navigation system.

  • Flight tests for aircraft development and certification have higher air accidents risk than other aerospace industries. Accordingly risk identification necessary for risk management in the safety management system is a very important factor in preventing similar air accidents during flight tests. But internationally issued accident statistics are usually confined to commercial transport aircraft and they do not reflect characteristics of flight tests, also databases to hazards identification during flight tests are not established or available in Republic of Korea. Therefore, we identified flight test procedures and traced the major causes of aviation accidents based on the statistics and preventive materials for risk management which were issued by international organizations and advanced countries of aviation. A total of 312 final reports classified as flight test among air accident/incident database held by U.S. NTSB were researched and about 200 flight test hazard were identified. The results of this study will be used as basic data for establishing the safety management system of the national comprehensive flight performance test site.

  • This paper presents the pose estimation of a small UAV utilizing visual information from low cost cameras installed indoor. To overcome the limitation of the outside flight experiment, the indoor flight test environment based on multi-camera systems is proposed. Computer vision algorithms for the proposed system include camera calibration, color marker detection, and pose estimation. The well-known extended Kalman filter is used to obtain an accurate position and pose estimation for the small UAV. This paper finishes with several experiment results illustrating the performance and properties of the proposed vision-based indoor flight test environment.

  • This paper deals with a post-processing of GPS receiver data in order to acquire a reference flight trajectory of an aircraft test. The flight test using an aircraft that is carried out several times since 2007 is the integrated test to verify the performance of the tracking and communications facilities in Naro Space Center and Jeju Tracking Center. In order to analyze performance of the tracking and navigation equipments, true reference data should be used for performance comparisons. Therefore off-the-shelf commercial GPS receiver, DL-V3 made by NovAtel Inc., is operated on the test to collect the GPS navigation data and the collected data is post-processed by GrafNav which is the off-the-shelf post-processing program made by NovAtel Inc. Through the post-processing of the collected data, a reference trajectory is generated with small error range about several decade centimeter level.

  • At negative-g condition, a float-type valve can open the passage of fuel in order to it flows continuously through a pressurized fuel tank system. Since specialized test conditions and high-cost supports are required, it is truly difficult to test the valve in a real high-speed test. Therefore, this paper contains performance analysis of a float-type fuel supply valve through flight tests conducting roll and negative-g maneuvers.
