A flight termination system, which consists of ground and vehicle systems, forcibly terminates flight if it is deemed dangerous. In order to accomplish this, the system should maintain the link reliability above a certain level throughout the whole flight. However, the national proving ground for guided missiles could not fully meet that condition because of the gradually improving performance criteria. In this paper, we have analyzed the link budget for the flight termination system. Furthermore, we have designed and developed an emergency destruction command transmitter system, which is a ground system of the flight termination system, to provide the necessary link margin. Afterwards, we measured the received signal strength at the vehicle system and compared it with that of the existing transmitter system. We hereby confirmed that the link reliability of the flight termination system improved.

The ground flight termination system(GFTS) could be used for the termination of launch vehicle in flight motion when the launch vehicle deviates from the designated route due to the system malfunction or failure as well as the launch vehicle can't be tracked by the ground tracking system. This paper introduces the basic concept and design of the ground flight termination system to be used for KSLV launch mission in NARO space center. In order to design the optimal ground flight termination system for KSLV launch application, the operational concept reflected on the flight trajectory and system characteristics of KSLV launch vehicle should be considered. Moreover the RF link budget analysis, and the analysis for system availability and reliability are done. Based on the analysis above, the each subsystem of ground flight termination to transmit the termination signal in stable is designed for KSLV launch mission.

Flight termination system(FTS) is used to terminate safely the launch vehicle's flight when it faces an emergency situation by transmitting termination command from ground FTS. RCC standard IRIG tone method has been used widely for FTS commands method in foreign ranges and Naro Space Center, but this method has a weakness for security of command signal. Therefore RCC had studied more secured EFTS standard and chose CPFSK digital modulation method. This paper describes basic concept and types of FTS and FTS types which foreign ranges had applied and describes standardization of EFTS in the U.S. based on RCC EFTS study reports.

The flight safety system for the satellite launch vehicles is required in order to minimize the risk due to launch vehicle failure. For prompt and reliable decision of flight termination, the flight safety system usually uses multiple sensors to estimate launch vehicle's flight trajectory. In that case, multiple types of observed tracking data makes it difficult to identify the flight termination condition. Therefore, a fusion tracking filter handling the multiple tracking data is necessary for the flight safety system. This research developed a simulation software for generating multiple types of launch vehicle tracking data, and then processed the data with fusion filters.

In this paper, we show the design requirements of the cryptographic module and its security algorithm designed to prevent the exposure of the command signal applied to Flight Termination System. The cryptographic module consists of two separate devices that are Command Insertion Device and Command Generation Device. The cryptographic module designed to meet the 3 principles(Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability) for the information security. AES-256 block encryption algorithm and SHA-256 Hash function were applied to the encrypted symmetric key encryption method. The proposed cryptographic module is expected to contribute to the security and reliability of the Flight Termination System for Space Launch Vehicle.

The first Korean satellite launch vehicle, KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-I), was launched for its first flight test on Aug. 25, 2009 from Naro Space Center located in south Jolla province. Because launch vehicles usually fly long range with large amount of propellants aboard, preparation of countermeasures against potential malfunctions during flight is essential in launch operation. In this paper, the flight safety operation, prepared to guarantee flight safety during launch operation of KSLV-I, is presented. Prior to flight test, flight safety analysis is performed to estimate associated risk levels quantitatively, and during flight, flight safety systems are operated to cope with any risky situations. Real-time flight monitoring including computation of instantaneous impact point using tracking data is executed normally and the flight test is completed without activation of flight termination system.

FTSR(Flight Termination System Receiver) is a device that receives a ground command signal to abort a flight mission when abnormal conditions occur in the space launch vehicle. The secure tone command message shall consist of a series of 11 character tone pattern. Each character consists of the sum of two tones which taken from a set of 7 tones defined by IRIG(Inter-Range Instrumentation Group) in the audio frequency range. The MHA(Modified High alphabet) command adds a security feature to the secure tone command by using the predefined difference code. In order to check the function and performance of MHA FTSR, which is under development, for KSLV-II, the testbed should have functions of RF signal generation, receiver's output port monitoring, RS-422 communication and test data management. In this paper, we first briefly introduce MHA command and FTSR interface, and then show the LavVIEW based testbed include its H/W configuration, S/W implementation and test results.

A FTS (Flight Termination System) is a system that resides in a flying object such as a rocket, unmanned airplane, helicopter, missile, etc., receives commands from ground stations or detects coordinates automatically, and accomplishes a destruction command in case the object does not follow the presumed orbit. In this paper, we address the implementation of a communication modem for the FTS modem. We present general theory, simulation results using Matlab, and several results on the implementation using VHDL.

In order to ensure the individual and mutual performances among the telemetry system, tracking system, flight termination system, GPS, and inertial navigation & guidance system which are installed in the KSLV-I 2nd stage and ground equipment of the Naro space center, flight test using a light airplane is required. Since the high degree of test efficiency is fulfilled through the minute plan and analysis about selection of the equipment which are applicable to the test, harness, operation strategy, and antenna installation. KSLV-I communication environment and flight profile should be precisely taken into account during the flight test. In this document, overall aspect of the KSLV-I 2nd stage equipment specification, a rack for the installation, harness, the airplane specification, and flight route which are required for the effective flight test are presented.
