  • Aircraft and the three-dimensional environment in which they operate are not user-friendly for human beings. As a result, maintaining the proficiencies necessary to safely and efficiently fly an airplane are difficult, and costly. The physiological and emotional status of the human element remains crucial in maintaining safe performance by all crew members. In the study of Hagiwara et al.(1993). they called the physiological and emotional status of the human element into the human alertness or physiological activity and stress, fatigue, circadian rhythm, alcohol. smoking, and self-medication are known the major factors that deteriorate the human alertness. Accordingly. this paper deals with the quantitative and objective performance test based on tracking error and reaction time by means of the new computer test program into which the perception-motion system of human beings is applied. Throughout this experiment using performance test, the results suggest that performance capability in state of sleep deprivation 2 hours and alcoholic 0.05~0.06% in blood were more impaired than one in a normal state, and they further showed statistically significant differences between them, which were influenced by impairment factors of body regulation and pilot's grade. We also obtained the prediction value and the 95% confidence interval of tracking error and reaction time at the normal state for the purpose of distinguishing performance capability between the normal state and the abnormal state. And it is expected that the evaluation of human alertness using performance test will be applied to the quantitative assessment of an each pilot's realistic consciousness/attention, and will lead a flight commander to the accurate decision of mission approval prior to a flight.

  • The health of licence holders (flight crew members and air traffic controllers) is recognized as an important element of aviation safety. The medical emergency symptoms that occur during the flight duty period without prior notice can interfere with human performance capabilities and threaten aviation safety. To prevent this, ICAO has been required to conduct a periodic medical assessment process of licence holders including routine analysis of in-flight incapacitation events and medical findings during medical to identify areas of increased medical risk and continuous reevaluation of the medical assessment process to concentrate on identified areas of increased medical risk. The supply and demand of licence holders have become a major issue due to the increase in air traffic around the world, and the pilot retirement age has been extended to 65 years. But, there is no significant change in the aviation medical assessments process. The follow up of the result of medical examination discovered through aviation medical examination is a very important part, but it has not been properly implemented, and the sick leaves and medical inflight incapacitation reporting system should be improved. The management of health risk factors for licence holders must be implemented to prevent aircraft accidents or aviation safety problems caused by health problems. In this paper, we propose the development plan and concrete improvement plan of the health risk management system of licence holders in Korea in terms of aviation safety.

  • Aviation Maintenance Technician(AMT)'s error is not directly link to deficiency which is differ to flight crew's error and it potentially maintains. Due to it usually occur as undesired aircraft state, hazards, like unreported maintenance error or near miss fortunately undetected and are not develop to accident. This could be a crucial influence of an accident occurrence. To remove these hazards, just safety culture should be support that anyone can report about safety problems and person who reported safety problems and hazards like near miss, should not get disadvantages. Also if it is satisfied, they must exempt for punishment and guaranteed for security. Hence, on this study, aviation maintenance site's just culture need to be researched and analysed about improvement for aviation maintenance field's positive just culture.

  • According to some statistics, about 13,000 passenger aircrafts are daily flying over the globe and these aircrafts are struck by a lightning flash at least once a year. But so far we have never heard lightning injured any passengers and crew members got shocked by lightning. The aircraft, lightning and the sky are inseparably related to each other. Accordingly, the aircraft and lightning are also inseparably related to each other. They say lightning is easily attracted to metals and these aircrafts are incidentally made of metal. Aircraft become statically and electrically charged when flying because of the friction with air. A lot of research and investigation to protect aircraft from the influence of lightening have been made since the early days. The following descriptions outline researches and investigations on how aircraft and ships get aways from lightning flashes during the flight or the sail. • The analyses of the aircraft accidents across all of the world, including Korea, reported that 70 % of the accidents could be attributed to the faults of pilots' human factors. It implied that the aircraft accidents could be cut down remarkably if the pilots' faults were reduced. In this context, the purpose of the study were to explore and reduce the problems of authoritarian job performance in the cockpit operation of which mainly depended on the captain, though it was supposed that two or more pilots work together as a team. In relation to this, the current worldwide trend of pilot education had tended to emphasize education on the human factors of pilots since the strong recommendation of the International Civil Aviation Organization in the 1980's. From the educational dimension of the pilots, it was attempted to explore a new educational perspective which would enhance the flight crew's performance of the cockpit through improving the courses of the pilot education curriculum and the teaching-learning methods.
