A flexible die, which is composed of a number of punches with adjusted heights to form a three-dimensional curved surface, is a crucial part of a flexible forming technology. In this study, the punch and control system of the flexible die were designed. The flexible die is divided into three modules, namely, punch, control and joint, and the corresponding modules were developed. The punch module materializes a three-dimensional forming surface by the control module, which is composed of an AC servo motor set and a linear guide. The joint module is necessary for the sequential motion between the servo motor set and the punch module. A sequential motion algorithm for the AC servo motor set, that uses the data of the punch relative heights, was also proposed. Finally, a flexible stretch forming test was carried out using the presently designed flexible die.
Flexible stretch forming is an appropriate process for manufacturing of components for aerospace, shipbuilding and architecture structures. Flexible stretch forming has several advantages including that it could be applied to form various shapes such as ones with double curved surfaces. In this study, a systematic numerical simulation was conducted for forming double curved surfaces using flexible stretch forming. The desired surface had a saddle type configuration. It had two radii one of 2500mm and the other of 2000mm along its length and width. In the simulation, the decrease of elastic recovery due to the stretching was confirmed. Experiments were also conducted to confirm the viability of the process. By comparing the simulation to the experiment results, the suitability of flexible stretch forming for double curved surfaces was verified. From the results, the maximum error from desired surface was confirmed at about 1.3mm at the edge of the surface. Hence, it is confirmed that flexible stretch forming has the capability and feasibility to manufacture curved surfaces for architectural skin-structures of buildings.

In this study we augmented a virtual object to an image of a flexible surface such as a paper, which is acquired from a web camera. To get more presence feeling, we consider realistic illumination on augmenting. To get the geometric relation between the camera and the flexible surface, we use markers that are printed on the surface. Using marker information in prior, three dimensional coordinates of the surface can be calculated. After the marker is removed from the input image, we attach a two dimensional texture and shadow to the flexible surface by considering realistic illumination.
A flexible tool is developed for automatic finishing of curved surfaces without any complicated control technique on three-axes machining center. The tool is made of thermosetting polyurethane elastomer on the surface of which aluminum oxide abrasives are mounted. Performance and durability of the tool are examined by finishing ball-end milled surfaces of high-alloyed tool steel. It is demonstrated that the tool removes cusp successfully without changing overall surface shape in relatively short time.
Flexible forming process for sheet metal using reconfigurable die is introduced based on numerical simulation. Numerical simulation of sheet metal forming process is carried out by using flexible dies model instead of conventional matched die set. Elastic cushion which has high resilience behavior from excessive deformation are inserted between forming punches and blank material for smoothing the forming surface which has discrete due to characteristics of the flexile die. As an elastic cushion, urethane pads are utilized using hyperelastic material model in the simulation. Formability in view of surface defect such as onset of dimple is compared with regard to various punch sizes. Consequently, it is confirmed that the flexible forming process for sheet material has appropriate capability and feasibility for manufacturing of smoothly curved surface instead of conventional die forming process.
This paper represents the response surface model for the cell gap on the flexible liquid crystal display (LCD) process. Using response surface methodology (RSM). D-optimal design is carried out to build the design space and the cell gap is characterized by the quadratic model. The statistical analysis is used to verify the response surface model. This modeling technique can predict the characteristics of the desired response, cell gap, varying with process conditions.
Copper is a promising electronic material due to low cost and high electrical conductivity. However, the oxidation problem in an ambient condition makes a crucial issue in practical applications. In here, we developed a simple and cost-effective Cu patterning method on a flexible PET film by combining a solution processable Cu nanoparticle patterning and a low temperature post-processing using acetic acid treatment, laser sintering process and acid-assisted laser sintering process. Acid-assisted laser sintering processed Cu electrode showed superior characteristics in electrical, mechanical and chemical stability over other post-processing methods. Finally, the Cu electrode was applied to the flexible electronics applications such as flexible and transparent heaters and touch screen panels.
To develop flexible adsorbents for compact volatile organic compound (VOC) air purifiers, flexible as-spun zeolite fibers are prepared by an electrospinning method, and then zeolite particles are exposed as active sites for VOC (toluene) adsorption on the surface of the fibers by a thermal surface partial etching process. The breakthrough curves for the adsorption and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) curves of toluene over the flexible zeolite fibers is investigated as a function of the thermal etching temperature by gas chromatography (GC), and the adsorption/desorption characteristics improves with an increase in the thermal surface etching temperature. The effect of acidity on the flexible zeolite fibers for the removal of toluene is investigated as a function of the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratios of zeolites. The acidity of the flexible zeolite fibers with different $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratios is measured by ammonia-temperature-programmed desorption ($NH_3-TPD$), and the adsorption/desorption characteristics are investigated by GC. The results of the toluene adsorption/desorption experiments confirm that a higher $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio of the flexible zeolite fibers creates a better toluene adsorption/desorption performance.
In this study, the method of designing the flexible wing model which will be used for wind tunnel testing of gust response alleviation system was presented. The design concept proposed herein was validated by performing the modal testing of the flexible wing model manufactured for demonstration purpose. In addition, the study on the gust response alleviation using flexible wing control surface was performed. For this purpose, optimal control with output feedback was adopted for designing the control surface controller, and the effects of gust response alleviation was validated by performing the numerical simulation for the representative flexible wing model. The methods proposed and validated in this study can be applied for wind tunnel testing of the flexible wing for gust response alleviation.
The influence of torsional rigidity of hinged flexible appendage on the linear dynamics of flexible spacecrafts with liquid on board was analyzed by considering the spacecraft's main body as a rigid tank, its flexible appendages as two elastically supported elastic beams, and the onboard liquid as an ideal liquid. The meniscus of the liquid free surface due to surface tension was considered. Using the Lagrangian of the spacecraft's main body (rigid tank), onboard liquid, and two beams (flexible appendages) in addition to assuming the system moved symmetrically, the coupled system frequency equations were obtained by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The influence of the torsional rigidity of the flexible appendages on the spacecraft's coupled vibration characteristics was primary focus of investigation. It was found that coupled vibration modes especially that of appendage considerably changed with torsion spring parameter ${\kappa}_t$ of the flexible appendage. In addition, variation of the main body displacement with system parameters was investigated.
