  • We report on plasma damage free-sputtering technologies for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic thin film transistor (OTFT) and flexible displays by using a box cathode sputtering (BCS) method. Specially designed BCS system has two facing targets generating high magnetic fields ideally entering and leaving the targets, perpendicularly. This target geometry allows the formation of high-density plasma between targets and enables us to realize plasma damage free sputtering on organic layer without protection layer against plasma. The OLED with Al cathode prepared by BCS shows electrical and optical characteristics comparable to OLED with thermally evaporated Mg-Ag cathode. It was found that OLED with Al cathode layer prepared by BCS has much lower leakage current density ($1{\times}10^{-5}\;mA/cm^2$ at -6 V) than that $(1{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}-10^0\;mA/cm^2)$ of OLED prepared by conventional DC sputtering system. This indicates that BCS technique is a promising electrode deposition method for substituting conventional thermal evaporation and DC/RF sputtering in fabrication process of organic based optoelectronics.

Specially designed BCS system has two facing targets generating high magnetic fields ideally entering and leaving the targets, perpendicularly. The OLED with top cathode prepared by BCS shows electrical and optical characteristics comparable to OLED with thermally evaporated Mg-Ag cathode. It was found that TOLED with ITO or IZO top cathode layer prepared by BCS has much lower leakage current density ($1\times10^{-5}$ mA/cm2 at -6V) than that ($1\times10^{-1}\sim10^{\circ}mA/cm^2$)of OLED prepared by conventional DC sputtering system. This indicates that BCS technique is a promising electrode deposition method for substituting conventional thermal evaporation and dc/rf sputtering in fabrication process of organic based optoelectronics.

  • Perovskite materials are promising candidates for next-generation optoelectronic devices owing to their outstanding external quantum efficiency, high color purity, and ability to tune the light emission wavelength. However, conventional thermal annealing processes caused the degradation of perovskite, resulting in poor optoelectronic properties and a short lifetime. Herein, we propose a laser-induced recrystallization of perovskite thin film to enhance its light-emitting properties. Laser-induced recrystallization process was performed using rapid and instantaneous laser heating, which successfully induced grain growth of the perovskite material. The laser processing conditions were thoroughly optimized based on theoretical calculations and various material analyses such as x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

  • The characteristics of $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer passivaton prepared by twin target sputtering (TTS) system for organic light emitting diodes. The $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer thin film passivation on a PET substrate had a high transmittance of 86.44 % and low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of $0.011\;g/m^2$-day due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag interlayer and effective multilayer structure for preventing the intrusion of water vapor. Using synchrotron x-ray scattering and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) examinations, we investigated the growth behavior of Ag layer on the $Al_2O_3$ layer to explain the SPR effect of the Ag layer. This indicates that an $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer passivation is a promising thin film passivation scheme for organic based flexible optoelectronics.

  • A series of amorphous molecules that possess both photoconductive and electro-optic properties was synthesized in order to investigate photorefractive properties of bifunctional organic-glasses. Diethylaminobenzaldehyde-diphenylhydrazone was covalently attached to 5-(4-diethylamino-benzylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-trione through a flexible alkyl chain (3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 carbons) containing two ether linkages. The longer linkage not only lowered the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the molecules, but also allowed faster orientation of the chromophore. To examine the photorefractive properties, a 50 ${\mu}$m-thick film was prepared from the mixture of a bifunctional molecule, butyl benzyl phthalate, and $C_{60}$. The photoconductivity of this composite was as high as $8.01\;{\times}\;10^{-12}$ S/cm at 60 V/ ${\mu}$m, and the maximum diffraction efficiency ( ${\eta}_{max}$) of 50 ${\mu}$m-thick film was about 5% at 80 V/ ${\mu}$m.

  • Oxide semiconductors are attractive materials for thin-film electronics and optoelectronics due to compatibility with synthesis on large-area, glass and flexible substrate. However, development of thin-film electronics has been hampered by the limited number of semiconducting oxides that are p-type. We report on the effect of the oxygen partial pressure ratio in the gas mixture on the electrical and optical properties of spinel Mg:$ZnCo_2O_4$ thin films deposited at room temperature using RF sputtering, that exhibit p-type conduction. The thin-films are deposited at room temperature in a background of oxygen using a polycrystalline Mg:$ZnCo_2O_4$ ablation target. The p-type conduction is confirmed by positive Seebeck coefficient and positive Hall coefficient. The electrical resistivity and carrier concentration in on dependent Mg:$ZnCo_2O_4$ thin films were found to be dependent on the oxygen partial pressure ratio. As a result, it is revealed that the Mg:$ZnCo_2O_4$ thin-films were greatly influenced on the electrical and optical properties by the oxygen partial pressure condition. The visible region of the spectrum of 36~85%, and hole mobility of 1.1~3.7 $cm^2$/Vs, were obtained.

  • Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a dielectric insulator with a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. It is an appealing substrate dielectric for many applications due to its favorable properties, such as a wide band gap energy, chemical inertness and high thermal conductivity[1]. Furthermore, its remarkable mechanical strength renders few-layered hBN a flexible and transparent substrate, ideal for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics in applications. However, the difficulty of preparing high quality large-area hBN films has hindered their widespread use. Generally, large-area hBN layers prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) usually exhibit polycrystalline structures with a typical average grain size of several microns. It has been reported that grain boundaries or dislocations in hBN can degrade its electronic or mechanical properties. Accordingly, large-area single crystalline hBN layers are desired to fully realize the potential advantages of hBN in device applications. In this presentation, we report the growth and transfer of centimeter-sized, nearly single crystal hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) few-layer films using Ni(111) single crystal substrates. The hBN films were grown on Ni(111) substrates using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD). The grown films were transferred to arbitrary substrates via an electrochemical delamination technique, and remaining Ni(111) substrates were repeatedly re-used. The crystallinity of the grown films from the atomic to centimeter scale was confirmed based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Careful study of the growth parameters was also carried out. Moreover, various characterizations confirmed that the grown films exhibited typical characteristics of hexagonal boron nitride layers over the entire area. Our results suggest that hBN can be widely used in various applications where large-area, high quality, and single crystalline 2D insulating layers are required.
